This has bothered me slightly... when did it become policy to mention episode titles by the initials? Was this a memo that I missed? Just wondering... because I read posts and there are Initials. I know that it is an episode title... so then I have to do a search for which title goes with which initials. Not that this is a big deal... it isn't, just wondering out loud about something.
Anyone willing to do a list for episode titles to initials? Maybe for newbies that would be nice... (not just for me... I think:confused: )

Yeah, I have to go look them up too. Writing out the titles would be preferrable, but failing that, an agreed on list of episode title abreviations would be good. Maybe as a thread in the new to Farscape area.

Snurcher.com lists the standard abbreviations in each episode entry: www.snurcher.com
Generally, they're acronyms, which means first letter of each word. Shorter episodes will use the whole word: Premiere, Nerve, Relativity, etc.
For episodes like Thank God It's Friday, Again, it's really much faster to write and read TGIFA. You kind of get the hang of it after a while...

well we're not exactly new to the abbreviation thing. almost every single show fandom abbreviates something, you know? it's easier to type B/A than Buffy/Angel and when it becomes redundant to do so after a while and people know what you're talking about, it's not as important.
however, i'm glad snurcher.com is there to remind me of what they all are!

I realized that every fandom abbreviates... I was just thinking because I have problems remembering... maybe others do to. That is all.

Christian Reformed Church Almost like Dutch Reformed or Reformed... or Protestant Reformed.
All us Dutch people are really stubborn and if we don't like something, we leave and form a new church. Ahh... the pleasures of Calvinist Protestantism.

You know, I'd of guessed Christian, but thought that was too frelling obvious. Sounds like an offshoot of my Mom's church. Or my Dad's. So is this a reformation of the reformed Dutch? :D
grinner
05-06-2003, 06:46 AM
Do you want me to get into that? It is really quite funny. It has alot to do with Dutch History in the Netherlands... it goes back to the late 1200's AD. Between the Hoeks(hooks) and the Cabeljauwen(codfish). And how the reformation affected both groups. And also about their feeling on a number of subjects. It is very long... suffice to say that it basically boils down to a number of issues. 1. Children sent to private or public schools. 2. Women as Elders/ Deacons or Ministers. 3. What the influence of the Church is on the Family... etc. 4. If the Church is conservative or liberal. 5. Which peoples are closer to the Mother Church in the Netherlands. It continues like this. There have been 1000 page books written on this subject.
Which is your Mom's church?

Personally, when I abrreviate, I tend to lowercase the letters that would have lowercased words in the title -- it makes it a little easier for me to figure out what the real title is.
For example, I would do RiB instead of RIB. That way, you pretty much know the "i" must be "in". Also, if I think of it, I use & instead of "a" for "and". I also do L@tP for Look at the Princess.

With the episode number addition assuming the first list was in the correct order.
All the eps were listed in airing order. Production order is a bit different for some eps in Season 1 and 2, check http://www.snurcher.com for details about that to be sure.
For example, DALD is actually 2.01 in the production order, so everything in season 2 is bumped up a number, except for LaTP pt 3 which is actually 2.22, not because of production order but because they realized after they assigned production numbers to all the season 2 eps that LatP would need 3 eps, so that got the last number of the season.
Nice job with the alphabetizing. :)

So the moral of the story is, refer to the abbreviations, not the numbers, cuz they're only sorta close to being right most of the time. :D
Of course if anyone wants to correct the list so the numbers are as accurate as the names presumably are, knock yourself out. Most of the hard work is done and it's just a matter of changing a number here and there that are wrong. ;)

People generally abreviate ho it works best for them. I'm not sure if people are going to follow a standardised system, but i could help. Some eps you just could take a word or two and we will still under stand what is being said.
such as; DNA, LATP, ET, Throne, Clockwork, Die Me, Back and Back, Liars, WWW, 3Crichton.
It's just up to the author.
grapeshot

I'm with Grinner on this. It is difficult to follow a post when it's full of abreviations. I have made a handy-dandy list that I keep by my computer so that I can decipher what's being discussed, but it puts a definite burden on the reader to have to keep referring to it. I know that this practice won't stop but I'd like to point out that IF the objective of the writer is to make the point crystal clear to his/her reader, then using acronyms only hinders that communication. It may be convenient to the writer to abreviate, but it isn't convenient for the reader.
It has always been my understanding of the rules of composition that IF you want to use acronyms (and I agree, that it is often convenient to do this and definitely silly to keep typing out the same title over and over again) then write out the entire title the first time you use it and put the acronym in parenthesis immediately after it. Thereafter you can continue to use only the acronym, safe in the knowledge that you have explained yourself clearly to your reader.
I usually end up skipping posts that are filled with too many episode title abreviations. In my experience, if the writer is too lazy to spell out the titles, then chances are they exhibit the same lack of rigor in their ideas and thought processes. Life is too short for me to waste my time on on posts in which the writer clearly put little effort.
"Gee, grapeshot, which side of the bed did you get up from THIS morning?"
grapeshot replies, "THE WRONG SIDE, you frellnik!"
