Fiona, played violin for a long time, in orchestra, sister played cello, I know what I am talking about.

well, we'll have to ask her now won't we? ;) Don't know Fiona, I do know being a photographer, that it is possible that the photographer changed her hand position, if he/she didn't like the way it looked. I've had THAT argument MANY times before... besides which Jimi Hendrix played his right handed guitar - left handed. Are you saying that it's not possible to play this way, or that it's not good form?

DentArthurDent, she cannot play properly holding the bow in that way. The grip is incorrect. Her fingers need to be closer to the frog of the bow, and the back of her hand needs to be flatter.

Also, the way she is holding the cello between her legs...might be a "photography" thing,*argh* but it actually needs to be centered and held deeper in the vee of her legs.

So, yes, it might LOOK rather "pretty" according to some photographer thing,*argh* but WHY can't they show women being beautiful AND competent? Why do they have to diminish her abilities in order to make her "look"sexy?

This way she looks pretty, allright, but she also looks like she doesn't have a CLUE how to play.

In the end, Fiona, that's the point. Only a chellist or someone that uses the bow, would know that. The photographer didn't know, and since RaeLee probably has had her pic taken a lot, she is used to taking direction from the photographer. So... Personally I DON't like the way she is holding the bow either, I wouldn't have her holding the bow at all, UNLESS I actually had her playing. I would then tell her to ignore me, and I would wait till the timing, expression and whatnot were right. A shot like this is a matter of style, and it wouldn't be mine... In fact there is often an art director that is demanding the shot look a certain way as well. Art Directors drive me crazy as often as not, but I am often working for them, and I am obliged to do what they say at the end.

I would encourage you to not look at this so much as diminishing her abilities, rather, as showcasing her. We all know she is talented. Indeed she has many talents. So look at the person that shines through the image, the form, the grace. The instrument IS, important, yes, but for this picture is is more of an accompanyment to who she is. It is for that, irrelevant that she isn't holding the bow correctly. Cello is one thing in a multifaceted life, It is she that is the reason for the picture.
