Sorry for bumping this dead thread but I think that if you change the extension of a file (f.e. JPG or GIF) into TXT Geocities will allow direct linking. Not 100% sure tho, never used Geocities myself.

Morias' format is just wrong. Just use the IMG tag.

But ok just wanted to suggest the extension thingy :D
