View Full Version : How much do you wach Scifi now vs. then?
Darth Buddha

Pure and simple. What's viewership now vs. your viewership during Farscape's Season 5?
Take into account the hiatus of several shows (i.e. if you're gonna watch Stargate when the new season starts, count that).
Then too, consider whether you're gonna watch Battlestar Galactica, or even daytime re-runs of Knight Rider.
I'm talkig an OVERALL weekly average now vs. then.
I know a lot of people have been dissatisfied with the latest from Scifi, and others are just too distraught over Farscape's cancellation to even view the channel. But I thought it would be interesting to see how much we still tuning in.
There's no judgment here on those who watch as much vs. those who watch less or not at all (guess I shoulda put an option for those who watch MORE).

Well, the problem with the way the poll is worded is that if you didn't watch anything but Farscape before, you're still watching "as much" ore even *more* now due to the repeats.
Darth Buddha
05-30-2003, 11:03 AM
Yep, but I can't edit the poll to add MORE than before. Need a moderator for that (if one happens by, please feel free to add MORE than before above the 100% level).
Apologies,

I would have marked Don't watch at all, but my father-in-law watches it, and when we end up at their house for dinner, he often has it on. Otherwise, I don't watch at all.

I watch the reruns *sometimes* They're a lot better on DVD, and I've got the rest on tape w/o commercials. And the season four reruns come on at 3 am here:eek: I'm never up that late and not usually up that early;)

Other than Farscape, "that network" doesn't enter my home. So I guess less than 1%, but for the sake of the poll, I entered the 5% category.
Darth Buddha

I'd like to keep it as worded for those who are watching Farscape re-runs... if you are watching as much Skiffy now or even more, even though it's reruns, please put that 100% in there.
Just curious.
I've got Season 1 and most of 2 on DVD at this point, and I'm not up by midnight (and I taped almost everything else already), so I'm a 5% (yes, I occassionaly catch a few minutes of Scape reruns if I'm up).
I really want to know how much our viewership has changed.

Only reason I watch Skiffy is simply for the reruns, and nothing else...(voted 5%)

05-30-2003, 02:46 PM
I have all of S1 and S2 on DVD, so I've watched nothing except for a couple of FS reruns at midnight. Not that I necessarily wouldn't. I've checked out the schedule and have not found anything I care to watch. I remember when I used to watch skiffy a lot back when they had IMan, the Chronicle, FS on prime time and Quantum Leap on at 6 PM. They occasionally had some cool movies too. Now.....nothing.
vikingscaper
05-30-2003, 03:10 PM
I only will watch the Farscape re-runs on Skiffy. I will not go anywhere near any of their other programming. Like Digger said, I used to watch the other shows that Skiffy had on, but I find nothing redeeming about their current shows show I skip them all together. I voted 5%.
BlackThorn
05-30-2003, 05:42 PM
I put down 5% which translates to - only Farscape re-runs and the very occasional movie. I just don't find much on the channel that interests me anymore.

It may be too late now but it probably would have been better to structure the poll as a two part question. Part 1 could have asked "On average, how many hours a week did you watch the SciFi Channel before Farscape's cancellation?" Part 2 could have asked "Since Farscape's cancellation how many hours a week do you watch the SciFi Channel?"
For me the first answer is "8-9 hours per week" and the second answer is "If it ain't Farscape, I ain't watchin'!"

What a response... I didn't expect this many votes this quickly.
Nor did I realize just how little Skiffy is being watched by the fans now as opposed to then... and from a quality basis no less, not a grudge.
P.S. If this format can support multiple level questions, I am unaware of it. Moreover, as with ALL survey questions, after the first 20 I would have worded it differently/better. This is an ideal format. But I agree that mulltipart would be better!

I don't even watch the re-runs. They're just on too late for me.
And, I've never been interested in Stargate. I couldn't even make it through one ep. It was just too boring. So .......now Scifi has nothing to interest me.
Except, maybe Star Trek:TOS.
Or sometimes when they run Battlestar Galactica:TOS.
Don't even get me started on this new "reinvisioned" version. A female STARBUCK!!! What an insult to the intelligence of scifi fans!!!

I still watch alot of Sci-fi. I watch the Knight Rider re-runs almost everyday and I watch Star Trek:TOS almost everyday as well. And I'm a big Stargate fan. And I feel the same way about the BSG movie. It's a slap in the face to those fans of the show. It's really going in the wrong direction. I know I will not be watching it. It will not be the same since there going to make starbuck a girl.

Well, I answered 5%, but I suppose that isn't exactly accurate for me b/c I tape the Farscape reruns and watch them the next day! Does that still count for watching Skiffy, I wonder? Hmmm... *wanders off to contemplate*

I watch the Saturday (not Friday!) morning repeats, even though I have them on tape, would watch the midnight repeats, but hard to be at work by 7:00 AM, so I don't. No biggy since I have all the eps released so far on DVD. But have not watched anything else on the channel, movies? allready have the good ones on DVD. So there is really nothing else for me to watch.

I used to catch TZ, Quantum Leap, Star Trek, and a bunch of other shows all the time. I even gave their lame movies a shot now and then. I was never much into Star Gate. I never sought out that show, I just watched it by chance really. Now, I have no interest in anything they've got on, except the Farscape reruns at 11pm.
I'd much rather spend my tv time watching Sundance, IFC, and DVDs. I feel so...deflated...whenever I think of the Sci-Fi Channel. They just don't hold my interest anymore.

I'm surprised that I'm the only one that voted for 100%.
I pretty much only watched Farscape before. Now, I have an 89hr Tivo, which will automatically record shows based on my viewing habits, as well as shows I specifically request. So, I've been recording all the FS reruns, as well as getting reacquanted with Roar. The Tivo will also record other shows/movies on Sci-Fi, wich I watch or not based on time and interest.

I answered 100%. I haven't been watching the Farscape reruns, but I've been taping Stargate on Mondays. The only thing I watched before on SciFi was Farscape. I tried to watch some of SG-1 season 6 last summer but it was boring. The earlier seasons are pretty good so far, though. I'm not big on reruns of old shows or on TV movies so I don't watch anything elseon SciFi. I don't watch much else on TV at all actually, except for hockey and occasionally baseball or Sportscenter.

Eve11 ... Hey there fellow stats grad student!
I'm glad that those who are watching as much are willing to post (I hope nobody thinks I "expected" them to post a low percentage).
I figured that some people would actually end up watching as much (and shoulda added a MORE option).
However, I didn't expect things to lie so heavily near the bottom. This surely is not a normal distribution!

I used to watch "Farscape" on Skiffy Fridays, and if I was meeting people late at night I'd watch some of whatever followed. Since I can't remember whether that was "Stargate" or something else, you can tell that it was very exciting:zzz:
I've caught up on the Season 1 eps I missed via dvd. Also, I sat through an entire weekend of Season 2 eps at a sci-fi con, so I didn't tune in for those reruns, either. I can count on half a hand the times I've set the alarm for 5 am on a Saturday for Season 4 eps; therefore, it's safe to say I watch significantly less Skiffy. I put down 5% - but that may be an overestimation.
Actually, this question is a bit weighted, since we'd like newcomers to watch as many eps as they want. If they're new to Skiffy, they may be in the "!00%" column. Definitely empathize with the tech aspect of setting up that kind of two-part questionnaire, but people's viewing habits "before vs. after" would produce a more accurate read of who is and is not watching.

Eve11 ... Hey there fellow stats grad student!
cool! Inasmuch as being a stats grad student is cool ;) . Yeah, I'd say we're definitely right skewed in this one. But then, anything involving Farscape has to be far from normal. :P

My TV was always on Skiffy a few years back. Whenever I turned the set on, I'd check Skiffy first and settle on it if there was nothing better.
Once they pulled Chronicle, GvsE, and Invisible Man, I looked at other channels whenever Farscape wasn't on. These days, my set is NEVER on skiffy.
I'm not boycotting Skiffy, they just don't offer anything worth watching. (And after Farscape, nothing is worth watching...)

I'll watch a bit of the old Star Trek, or a bit of a movie, etc.
My daughter's waiting for the new season of SG-1. I've tried watching SG-1, but it is SO BORING!
They only have one plot, no subplots to speak of. Only two reversals and spend the last 15 minutes resolving the one problem with technobabble. It drives me nuts.
"relative to during Farscape Season 5"
we all knew what you meant--but huh, what?
Ain't no season 5---yet. You meant relative to before the end of the first run of Season 4? Or maybe to before the cancellation was announced?

I pretty much only watched SciFi for Farscape before and now I watch (and/or Tivo) the reruns every night. I have all the current US DVDs, but there are still a couple of S3 eps that I haven't seen. Fortunately, I'm a late night person and usually want to watch something around midnight before I head back into my office for another couple of hours of work. I also want to make sure the reruns get the best possible ratings they can -- want to look good for potential suitors after all. :D

I used to watch Sci Fi all the time. Now there's nothing worth tuning in to. As far as I'm concerened the cancellation of Farscape was just another nail in the coffin (a big nail to be sure). I think the last thing I watched on Sci Fi was that horrible Riverworld thing (was it a pilot or a movie or did they just forget to air the rest of it?)

Interesting this leads right into the post I just made, about 'are scapers valuable' anyway I voted 5% I watch Farscape when I feel like it, and I am home. I am lucky to get the show at 9pm pst since I get a Boston feed for the dish. I have all the eps on tape, and do want to retape some. Otherwise skiffy isn't even a blip on my radar.

Wasn't sure exactly how to answer this since I haven't seen Season 5 yet! :cry2: But guessing you meant Season 4 I chose based on that assumption.
SciFi used to be the first channel I checked when I turned on my TV. Now I glance at the listings on the Guide channel and rarely see anything worth bothering to check out. I've never liked horror and have never been able to fathom why people think that just because a person loves science fiction they should like horror/creature stuff also and that seems to be the bulk of what is on the supposedly SciFi channel lately.

Given that current viewership of Skiffy can surely be used to inform Campaign Strategizing, I thought it belonged there far more than OT the the UT, but seems the responses keep coming in.

Darth Buddha

Would seem so, B Sharp.
We get a high enough count, and maybe this sort of data could be forwarded to some media writer whose written favorably of our cause, or disfavorably of Skiffy. Farscape viewers abandon Skiffy in droves! (and not due to any organized campaign).
Passing on info like that would be a decision I'd want left to Staff and our wonderful contact types, of course. I'm just here to gather some data to better capture what's happening, and make a point or two.
But we'd need probably 300 more counts for that, even if we wanted to do it.

By the Goddess!! This question is unanswerable. Not only was there never a season five to watch it during, but I've only ever watched sci-fi for Farscape. Therefore, I guess I watch it "more" because its on 5 times a week as opposed to just Fridays, but that would sound like I like Sci-fi which I don't. This is frelled.

I used to watch SciFi ALOT!! Early mornings, lunchtime, after dinner, and then (OF COURSE) Friday nights... Now I watch the midnight showing of FS (it's on at 9:00 here) and if I'm not on my computer right after I might watch a little of SG1 or X Files .. usually I turn tv off as soon as FS is over and get online. ~TS

Of respondents to date (n=132), 97% have reduced their Scifi Channel viewing.
Average drop was 91%. In other words, those who responded are on average watching about 8% as much Scifi as they used to.
A third of respondents have stopped watching altogether, and more than half have dropped to below 10% of prior levels.
If this is representative of the Save Farscape population of almost 4,000 (might be a stretch there -- those who check in the most are most likely to vote) then we are looking at the equivalent of Scifi losing about three thousand six hundred viewers.
How this translates in terms of the ratings that Farscape got I wouldn't want to discuss except in a matter of trends... but this suggests that a proportion of the people represented in Farscape ratings THEN have since tuned Scifi out to a large extent.

After I started watching Farscape, I made a concious effort to support the channel. I'd watch things during the week that I normally wouldn't have, but if nothing else was on, I'd default to Skiffy. Now I don't. When I click by on my remote, there is nothing to hold my interest and I don't feel the need to force myself to watch any of their programming. I only watch their FarScape reruns to tape them for my bro & sis-in-law, since they don't have access to Skiffy. Put me in the 5%.

I put 5%...that would be the occasional Farscape marathon and channel surfing....I will watch a movie when it intrigues me.
But I should mention that I grew up watching MST3K, so that doesn't necessarily mean they have GOOD movies that intrigue me. I'll watch really crappy movies cause they entertain me.

I guess I must have taken this poll the first time it came out. My viewing of the SciFi channel has diminished over the last two years. IIRC, I believe there was a time when First Wave, I-Man and Farscape were all showing on SciFi at the same time. That's when I would tune in to the channel a lot. A lot of times I would just leave it on the channel after one of the shows I liked was over. In fact, the only reason I started watching Farscape was because a couple of times I was too lazy to pick up the remote after I-Man.
I was never into the "boycott" thing and still am not. I used to check out SciFi when channel surfing, was watching the X-Files on there for awhile, but in the last couple of months, there really hasn't been anything they're offering that interests me. I find better SciFi movies being shown on USA and a couple local stations than what SciFi is offering.
I feel it's only fair to add that if you check the Network News forum it appears that overall, SciFi's ratings are higher than last year.

I watch Farscape if there is something worthwhile watching, but that is not often now. I used to watch Stargate, but that was mainly on Farscape Fridays when I was in front of the TV fro Farscape. Without Farscape to draw me there, I don't necessarily make a point to be in front of the TV to watch Stargate. I don't care for most of SciFi's stock shows now. If they happen to be playing a movie I like or they have a good mini-series, I will watch. Then again, the movies only if I happen to be in a mood to watch TV and SciFi has something worth watching at the time. Mostly now I watch the history channel, the learning channel, Discovery channel or comedy central.

I don't watch Skiffy at all. No cable. Cancelled it after Farscape left. There wasn't enough quality programming on to justify the cost. When Farscape was on, I watched other programs on Skiffy, esp. on Friday nights- Invisible Man, First Wave, Outer Limits. What do they have to offer now-Scare Tactics and Tremors? No thanks!
