Over at http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/ there's a story on the upcoming movie & info on shooting in Australia.

Doug Naylor is currently in Australia investigating studio facilities and commencing preliminary design work for intended shooting in late September. The move may come as a surprise to those who expected a Shepperton shoot. "We had originally planned for Shepperton," Doug told reddwarf.co.uk, "but at the time we were told there were no studios available. We looked everywhere - Germany, Austria, Italy - and eventually Richard Taylor at Weta (Lord of the Rings) recommended Australia."

Ultimately, Doug has been pleased with how things have turned out. "We've been delighted by everything we've found out here. Australia's the sci-fi capital of the world right now. Star Wars, The Matrix, Farscape... It's the ideal place for Red Dwarf."

Oh come on now!

If Red Dorf can get a movie made, surely a Farscape movie can
be made! I mean, they aren't even in the same class! Ok, Red
Dwarf is a nice little half-hour comedy while Farscape is an hour
long Action/Adventure/Romance/Comedy/Horror masterpiece so
I guess they aren't in the same class.

Hey! look at this part:
No additional cast or crew have yet been announced, although a number of names are in the frame for key positions.

Maybe we should suggest Gigi, Loni, Virginia, etc. would be to
Red Dwarf's advantage. In addition to their acting, many Farscape
viewers would tune in just to see them.

(Disclaimer: No offence to Red Dwarf fans, I've enjoyed it too)

Comparing Farscape & Red Dwarf is like comparing an apple to a herring!

I agree Mrelia. I've watched Red Dwarf off and on. Unfortunately, my local PBS station never showed it in any kind of order. I don't even think they would stick with episodes from the same season. I liked it though, and it was pretty funny. I would definitely go see the movie.

I have seen all the red dwarf episodes and it seems to me that Farscape paid the show considerable homage. The had an episode where each cast member lost their most characteristic trait and they had an episode where there was a pet thingy that turned out to be a changeling. There are also parallels with the Lister/Kochansky Chrichton/Sun realtionships. Also the robot's name is "Kryten". And the smeg/frell thing is also quite similar.

Red Dwarf appears to have had a sizeable ammount of influence on Farscape's creators. I don't think the show is anywhere near as good as farscape but I do think some of you are being a bit too dismissive. The show did have its moments. I think the scene where Lister doused Rimmer with that virus when they got thrown in prison was one of the funniest things I have ever seen on TV.

Anyhow the fact that they are working on a movie is encouraging. There are a lot of simialrities with the project. Both Sshows were cancelled with a cliffhanger and both movies are planned to take place before the "end" of the show however Red Dwarf is different from the Farscape situation in one important way and that is money. They can do the movie on a significantly smaller budget than could Farscape because it is a comedy rather than serious scifi. It is encouraging none the less and I think everyone here should see the Red Dwarf movie if it makes it to your local theater just to help out fellow fans.

There's another similarity between the shows that no one's mentioned yet. Both Farscape and Red Dwarf are well written and brought to life by an incredibly talented cast!

There are soooo many SF references in Red Dwarf, like the Terry Pratchett with the appearance of Death.

My favorite scene in all of Red Dwarf, ends with:
Cat - Betty Rubble? I would go with Betty...but I'd be thinking of Wilma.
Lister - This is crazy. Why are we talkin' about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
Cat - You're right, this is an insane conversation.
...
Lister - She'll never leave Fred and we know it.

PS - Of course I meant Kipper! ;)

Lister - She'll never leave Fred and we know it

The single most funniest line in any comedy I've ever seen.
I died when Lister said that. And there's the Cat, simply nodding in agreement at that line.

Red Dwarf is extremely good. No, the production is not close to Farscape, but the charactors actually change with the experiences they've had. (Sound familiar?)

For instance, in the fourth or fifth season, they had to re-boot the holographic Rimmer. And the difference between Rimmer in the first season and the Rimmer in this episode is night and day. I mean, he's still a whinning little pratt, but he grew. There was a difference.

An excellent show. Watch it from the beginning if you get the chance.

"Smoke me a kipper! I'll be home for breakfast."

I have fond memories of Rimmer in his Gingham dress, plaits and Mr Flibble on his arm.... lol

Red Dwarf soooo rocks! Also I didn't think it was cancelled... just kinda on hold.. for a long while.. :rollin: Kinda like Doctor Who... which was actually just suspended I'd read on some sites.. The BBC have odd ways of phrasing things.. :rollin:
