View Full Version : Season 3 + 4 DVD box sets?

EdenisT

Like all huge fans of Farscape in Australia, I have purchased both the season 1 and season 2 box sets, which according to the boxs, is partly produced by channel 9.

Does anyone have any information on box sets for seasons 3 + 4? I would "really" love to have these. [and eventually season 5!]

Seeing that they are produced by channel 9, perhaps they are only released once the series has been shown. Channel 9 is currently towards the end of s3 with somewhat inconsistent coverage. [ a bummer for fans without Foxtel :(]

__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ______

I have now edited the above thread topic as I have now bought the S3 box set! [Hooray!]

Any discussion on any of the box sets is welcome!

Hi, folks.

Hensons owns and controls the DVDs etc. Not sure whether there is a show and release relationship with Channel "stuff 'em around 'cos NOONE in Australia watches science fiction". If so, at this rate, we'll NEVER get the other sets! Fingers crossed for S3 next year, anyway (S1 last yr, S2 this yr, etc....?)

Hi!

I wrote an email to Australia to Yoramgross (Yoramgross has a publication and a distribution agreement with Henson) and to Jean Russell there and she replied that "season 3 is set for release towards the end of September 2003." And that's region 4 then.

I was a bit worried that the release would be sometime near December. Luckily it is not.

If someone wants to ask about season 4, the address is "jean.russell@ygross.com.au"...

(And sorry for my grammar: I'm finnish...) :)

Good on u Imlego, at least now i'm reassured that we will be able to have the season for good. Thats probably the 2nd best news i could hear at the moment 1st being if i heard that Farscape will be having a 5th Season. Bu the way, Imlego, you didn't happen to find out what the special features will be. Judging from the huge leap they went from the Special features in the 1st season boxset to the 2nd Season i would expect them to be very good.

Imlego

Sorry, but no, I didn't. I thought my email was already quite a big leap of faith, so I thought that I shouldn't push it. But I agree that the amount of extras was considerably different in season 1 & 2 sets, so I wouldn't mind, if someone else liked to inquire about them... :)

YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!!!!

It's almost here. Look what I found from Karlsweb:

August 20, 2003: The third volume of DVDs will be released in Australia on October 8, 2003. It will include a six disk set with all of the Season Three episodes, Cast & Crew commentaries, Art Gallery, Farscape Cartoon (this could mean "Revenging Angel"), Concept Art, Storyboards and Props.

Only a couple weeks away now... Except getting it to Finland may take an extra week or so, but anyway - it's party time...

Oh, and a pic:

I'm just a bit confused. I see 2 dates above, October 8 and September 6. Can someone please clear this up for me and tell me which one of these is when the S3 box set is meant to be released in Australia. There is probably something really obvious that ive missed but I really need to know! Thanks.

Many Australian online stores list Farscape r4 season 3 boxset to be released in October 8th. These stores include

Atlantic DVD (http://www.atlanticdvd.com.au/)
Total DVD (http://www.totaldvd.com.au/shopping/) and
HMV (http://www.hmv.com.au/v4/Coming_Soon/dvd.asp)

So it should be The Date.

And by the way, about the extras:

• Cast and Crew Commentary
• Direct Scene Access
• Episode Synopses
• Farscape Cartoon
• Farscape Animation Art Gallery
• Character Concept Art
• Props
• Storyboards
• Backgrounds

Don't suppose anyone knows what episode commentaries we will be getting?? The UK contingent always tells of downright hilarious commentaries that I want to hear!!

Kalliope
08-25-2003, 06:37 AM
UK version of Season 3 contains only one commentary for "Relativity" by Lani Tupu and director Peter Andrikidis.

Americans got "SIW pt. 2" by Claudia Black, "Green Eyed Monster" by Ben Browder and Tony Tilse and recently "The Choice" again by Claudia Black herself.

Considering the fact, that you got completely different commentaries for Season 2, which are available for Australia ONLY at the moment (I hope Contender UK will include them in their Season 2 Boxset release later this year), it's quite possible that you'll get something else than I mentioned above...

Oh thanks for that info, it's too bad that we can't all get the same commentaries (ie: ALL of them!!), but I guess that's the joy of it all. I'm just going to have to travel and hook up with some international Scapers to watch their commentaries...
:P

One thing I don't understand... why does Aussie version of Farscape DVDs consist of only 6 discs? Both, UK and US versions have 10 of them... and no interviews with Farscape actors for Aussie Scapers? No Farscape: Undressed? Big mistake...

Hiya Kalliope

One of the things I read about in reviews of the Farscape DVDs in Australia is that the transfer quality is quite poor in parts. Maybe squeezing the eps into 6 DVDs takes priority over the quality of the transfer over more DVDs. That's why I stuck with my Contender group DVDs through Choicesdirect.

I don't see why four episodes should be "squeezed" into a DVD when DVD's can contain over three hour movies (for instance, Amadeus) with incredible quality without compromising in anything - four episodes of Farscape add up to about 160-170 minutes in total.

There were some problems with season 1 episodes where the picture pixelated occasionally for a second or so but none of those problems is evident on season 2 set. So not a very good theory. :)

Of course it's sad if the picture clarity isn't flawless but r4 sets are so much cheaper and there's really not that much difference in quality that I would be willing to spend more money buying r1 or r2 sets.

mpee

Hiya Imlego

I think I was somewhat ambiguous or misleading in my explanation. Sometimes the picture quality on a DVD is not determined by how much space it takes up, but simply by the transfer quality itself. I would suggest this is moreso to do with 'rushing' the job (the transfer), rather than 'squeezing' the episodes onto the dvd as I said before.

Thanks, Imlego, for helping me refine my statement.:aok:

I agree about your R4 price rates, though, Imlego. For example, it has cost me about $300 per season to get my boxsets from the UK whereas $115-$130 gets you the full season in Australia. I've been buying my UK DVDs for the past 2-2.5 years, and so was paying for promptness rather than cost-effectiveness. Where I bought the boxsets from now offers an entire season for ca $110-$120 AU. After I had most of season 3 the first of the season boxsets hit Australia, but I decided I would continue with the UK DVDs mainly for the continuity in the boxsets themselves.:D

Imlego
08-29-2003, 01:37 AM
Yes, "rushing" is a better word.

But nonetheless, I think season 1 was so far the only season with these apparent problems whereas season 2 had none of them. Not as far as I'm aware.

But as it is I'm very happy with my r4 sets and I think you are with your r1's. At the end: we are very fortunate to have Farscape at all. :)

Yeah Season 2 is pretty good BUT between a couple of the LATP episodes, instead of running smoothly onto the next after the credits, my DVD freezes, and i'm sure it's a fault with the dvd.

The season 3 DVD's from the US sound Awesome!! I'm gonna get them from there!! BUt do they have this "farscape Undressed" feature? and what is it? I've seen pics but i really don't know what its about or when it was filmed etc. Does someone know? :)

I just picked up my S3 boxset 2 days ago. sweeeeeet!
I'm not extremely worried about the small glitches mentioned above, cause they are not audible. I'm just happy to have season boxsets so that i can have all of farscape on DVD. It is a shame about the lack of extra specila features in australia, but it wont take away from the boxsets themselves. Its the episodes which I pay for. anything else is a bonus!

I totally agree with you: extras are just that, extras. But while at it, could you tell me what episodes have commentaries? I read from Allzone that there's commentaries on The Choice and The Revenging Angel but somehow I believe there's supposed to be more... Am I wrong?

I think I should have my copy of the boxset on monday, that's when it's due to come to Finland, anyway. I truly hope it will - my fever for Farscape is increasing exponentially... :)

EdenisT
10-11-2003, 06:23 AM
The commentaries are as follows:
Eat Me, by Guy Ross
Revenging Angel, by Rodney Whitlam, Athol Henry and Pablo de la Torre
The Choice, by Rowan Woods and Justin Monjo

I havnt watched these yet, but if going by the S2 commentaries, they should be brilliant!

Imlego
10-20-2003, 10:36 AM
Season 1 was published in October 2002, season 2 in May 2003 and season 3 in October 2003. If they follow the pattern, season 4 should be out in May. I posted the email address where I got the information concerning season 3 on this thread - maybe you could ask for season 4?

EdenisT

In reference to my previous post, the audio commentaries in the S3 boxset are quite good. Even the Guy Ross [Farscape Composer] audio commentary was very insitefull. And, compared to the S2 one, was a great step ahead. It really gives a deeper understanding of the feelings and emotion which the music puts into the show.
The Revenging Angel commentary is shorter than any of the others [it only goes for just under 30 mins]. But this is because it is done by the crew who created the animation sequences in the episode. Although short, the commentary gives is great to watch [well, listen actually]
The final commentary [The Choice, by Justin Monjo and Rowan Woods] is my personal favourite. The thoughts of the Director and Writter of this episode go together like bread and butter. Each supports the other very well! Even there own personal stories of there lives now and at the time of shooting are great to listen to, and actually show how they come up with the great ideas for episodes. Even how they relate to previous episodes!

Overall, the bonus features of the S3 boxset are a great reward, and accent the episodes in a great way!

Worth every penny!

Can't wait for the S4 boxset!! [And eventually S5!]

What a great invention email really is! So it's probably around May when season 4 gets released - thanks that you asked them.

This means I have to watch season 3 sparingly and watch only an episode per week. I've watched the first three episodes and they've been GREAT - especially Selfinlicted Wounds. Bring on season 4 - quick!

:)

Kalliope
10-27-2003, 09:45 AM
Especially Self Inflicted Wounds pt. 2 with the commentary by Claudia Black, unfortunately it's only Region 1 release. I've got it on video tape from one of my British friends who is the lucky owner of multiregional DVD player and purchases Region 1 DVDs just for commentaries. This one is really great.

Imlego, Season 4 has been already released on DVD for Region 2, check www.amazon.co.uk, unfortunately it doesn't contain any commentaries. But Farwell featurette at 4.5 is just heartbreaking and really makes you cry, but you can always see "The Outtakes" just after it and you can't stop ROFLOL

I admire your self-control, Imlego!! I got s2 on DVD for my birthday (well it was bought two days beforehand), and had watched half the season before it was my actual birthday!! So all in all, I watched the whole season in four days, so 22 episodes by five days equals about five or so episodes a day. Eep, now that is worrying. But the goodness!!

I got s3 the day after it was released, and even though I'd seen about half the season here and there, I was reluctant to watch the episodes I'd not seen, and still haven't watched two or three of them. I think the reality of it all is dawning - after this and s4, there tragically is no more to come (YET!).

episode a week?

season in 4 days?????

u people dont know the meaning of marathon. i enter the world of farscape and awake dizzy and dis-orientated hours later on my couch after uncontrollably watching dvd after dvd. i say, put more effort in! even i strive to work harder at it!

send on season 4 i need another hit!!!!

Imlego

Keeping the one episode per week -method is little easier when watching three other shows at the same time: Deep Space Nine, 24 and Enterprise. Three episodes of DS9 per week, one of 24 and as many episodes of Enterprise as we will. So that alone keeps us occupied five days a week. Add to that one night of Farscape.

Of course the main reason to spare Farscape is that R4 set of season 4 isn't released until in May 2004 so what would we do if we watched the whole season 3 in a few days?

And the other reason is... well, we have to live also. (What? Life outside Farscape?)

:)

LMAO, I have gotten to the dizzy and dis-orientated stage, I've done an all-nighter with friends and that was interesting. We were watching the LATP trilogy (one of my faves) and I fell aslep and missed the best 90 seconds of the entire trilogy!!!!! I'm going to give s4 a good go at doing the 22 hours thing - it will be holidays then and I will hopefully have saved up enough money to buy a dvd/vcr player. I commend your dedication, ebloodaxe!!

If the rumours about the miniseries is true - as is the rumour that the miniseries is going to be released on dvd before tv, I believe we should have a pretty good chance to have an enhanced region 4 season 4, with original season 4 AND the miniseries. What you think? Should I get my hopes up?

If the release schedule goes as it's gone before (six months between releases), the next set should be here in May - and miniseries should be ready then... Am I just fantasizing?

I asked Yoram Gross about season 4 and mini series dvd releases and this is what they answered:

Universal will be releasing Farscape 4 in Australia, probably towards the end of 2004. As for the mini series, plans for DVD release have not been finalised as yet, especially as the series has yet to air. However I am sure that if you e-mail me in 6 months I should have more news on what is happening with that release.

Kind regards,

Kathryn

So, it would appear that I have to wait season 4 for a quite a while. That's bad news. But good news may be that they might include the mini series in the season 4 set. Well, we wait and see - but damn it's a long wait.

Kalliope
02-16-2004, 05:06 AM
I'm not sure they can include the mini in the season 4 set, rather not. It should be a separate release.

So... releasing Season 4 set at the end of 2004 in Australia means that Season 4 Boxset here in Europe will not be released earlier than March/April 2005... I hope Aussie release will contain some interesting episodes commentaries!!!

It depends on whether your player is modified to play dvds from all regions. Modifying is usually a very simple procedure - my player was modified for a little price in the store where I bought it. It took the salesman just a couple of minutes to do it.

Not all players need to be moded, you can get a fair few now that are multi-region. The long wait for season 4 better spawn some good extras (I want commentaries for every episode.), as it will be the last chance other than the mini.
