Okay - vidding 101 here, folks. If you're going to choose a song that's pretty long (like "I See You Baby" or "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"), EDIT IT!!! People will get very tired of the same things over and over again, and will get restless after about 4 minutes.

FWIW, I tried to do "I See You Baby". I couldn't edit it down the way I wanted it to work. I think that's when I wound up doing SopranoScape instead.

"Work It" by Missy Elliott, that for some reason, put the images of a potential Farscape vid rolling through my head. Granted they played it on the radio to death, but it made me wish I could make a music video.

Well if you have windows XP you do and you didn't even know it :P

I just use windows movie maker. Sure it doesn't let me fully explore my artistic vision, but it's better then a stick in the eye.

As for video capturing, I just use downloaded episodes, other videos(it's kind of cheap, but it works) and if worst comes to worst I have the woderful LithiumDoll(ALL of her videos are good ;)) cap the part I want and set me up.

So I spend no money and get to make half-ass videos :P

So, You Want To Make A Vid (http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=42;action=display;threadid=9454) at Kansas may have some helpful stuff in it for you ...

You can make vids on your PC - if you're using XP you already have vidding software on there, look for Movie Maker. It's a horrible program, but it's okay for just seeing what does what. After that, there's other vidding software you can get, ranging from free to mind numbingly expensive. You'll find examples of those on the link above.

If you don't want to be crashing every five seconds, you'll need a fair amount of RAM in your computer. At the very, very least 256, but I would recommend 512 or higher, if possible.

How you actually get the clips varies. You can DL them from BitTorrent, or KaZaA or whatever, but the quality tends to be a bit hit and miss. If you have a capture card, you can get clips directly from video or dvd (someone else help there, it's not a method I use :O ) or, finally, if you have a dvd drive and the eps on dvd you can rip chapters straight out and encode them to avi with a couple of freeware programes - SmartRipper and EasyEncode.

There are several good guides to making songvids out on the web. Just do a Google (or my new favorite search engine, Vivisimo (http://vivisimo.com/)) search on songvidding.

One tool that I absolutely CANNOT do without is VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) . It will let you do all kinds of cool things with video and audio. And, it's FREE. I use it almost every day. I also use DVDDecoder and DVD2AVI for ripping DVDs, and have a Pinnacle AV capture card.

As for software, you can go as cheap or as expensive as you want to. Personally, I use Adobe Premiere 6.1. It's probably about the best package out there, but it's pricey and somewhat user-hostile. Pinnacle sells an all-in-one package for about $300 that gives you the capture card, software, After Effects (for transitions and such), and a FireWire cable connector. I've seen much cheaper versions of movie-making software, but I don't know how well they work.

For capturing from the TV, I'd recommend either a capture card, or importing from a digital video camera.

It’s much cleaner now and can be found at http://www.craisie.com/vids/ I have also done “Peacekeeper” and “Back in Black”. At my site is a re-edit that I believe is much more in touch with the song than the original at Farscape Fantasy.

As for how to do vids, I’ve done a little write up on how I do it. I’ll agree with what LithiumDoll said about Windows Movie Maker. It’s a great starter program but is very limited. It has a tendency to crash when you use more than about a dozen clips. Most videos contain way more than a dozen clips.

Look for a freeware or shareware MPEG-2 decoder. On the Mac I use Quicktime Pro ($30 for a license and another $20 for the MPEG-2 support) and DiVA, a freeware decoder. I'm sure a quick search will find a bunch of Windows equivalents.

I use a program called DVD Decoder to rip DVDs. It's freeware, and very good. I use it's companion program, DVD2AVI to cut the scenes that I want and convert them to AVI. If you give me your e-mail address, I can send you both of them. They're very small and fit into one e-mail each.

I use a video capture card. I have a Pinnacle AV capture card. It's all right. Don't ask me to sing Pinnacle's praises right now. I'm attempting to make my first DVD with our new DVD writer, and it's giving me all kinds of dren. :rolleyes:

I use a D/A capture device put out by Dazzle, since purchased by Pinnacle. Works okay, but not as advertised. It's supposed to send back to the VCR, but have tried two different VCRs with no luck whatsoever.

The only advantage to ripping from DVDs is that it takes up less space to capture individual clips. Though I may become a convert since I'm soon going to be without a DVD player.

I have done a couple vids with downloaded episodes, though the biggest problem is the differing quality from different sources. These were a single episode and a trilogy vid so there was consistency of quality. I've noticed the inconsistency more in the season 4 episodes.

This song would be perfect for a John and Aeryn vid (I know there's a glut of shippy vids, but what can you do? :shrug: ) The singer is the lead for Nickelback, with that cool, husky voice and I can just see John chasing Aeryn around as the song plays. hey, i dont suppose anyone could get crackers dont matter and turn it into an avi and send it to me? i have it on dvd, but i cant get it to work with my movie maker, pretty much all my ideas for a video are stemming from that ep right now.

Did you get DVD2AVI all right? You can use that. Just clip the scenes that you want and it will convert it to AVI.

You might be encoding it with the wrong codec. I generally use HuffyUV. Moviemaker may prefer different codecs. That's not really a discussion that I can help you with - the technical stuff is my husband's part of our team. ;)
