Right now, my living room is being taken over by a few dozen sweaty men and a few thousand people screaming and yelling. No, it's not a Manimal Convention. It's a football game and it sucks.
Screaming, yelling, punching, kicking. Women in the stands near tears that someone didn't make a basket--I mean goal or touchdown or touchback or field zone.
Why must the game be watched? Why can't the final score be shown on the screen for like 3 minutes. Why this exorbitant outlay of expense, resources and time for something that is over in a few hours and never shown again?
What's the big deal? Anyway, instead of watching a movie or even old eps of Farscape, I am forced to watch this game because my boyfriend loves UT.
So here i am in the computer room (I think my cat shit in here) browsing FMD (which is actually a pleasure) and wishing that I lived alone again. I hate sports. I hate them more than the back of Forrest Whitaker's neck.

sorry to hear that. You must not have been big into sports growing up. That is typically what causes the males of the species to watch sports... thinking about when they used to play.
Personally... I love Football(American Rules) for any non-US/Canadian citizen). I can watch it all day... infact I did.

I could never get into watching football or basketball or soccer myself and am still perplexed as to how my father can be entertained by it...but show me a hockey game, and I develop a Y chromosome on the spot. Including the viscious screaming and yelling and the obnoxious agonizing 'noooooooooooooooooooo' when the other team scores. I broke my remote when my team got knocked out of the playoffs last year. So, in short, sport rules. :aok:

No, I wasn't into sports as a child. I have a funny story about it, if I may.
I was in the second grade and my dad lobbied hard to coach the Junior Pro Basketball team of which I was a part. I secretly hated the sport but I went to practice and went to the games if only to please my dad. I told my mom I didn't like it but she assured me that if I just kept at it, I would learn to like it. This was wisdom coming from a woman who used to pump her own bathwater out of a well and wear dresses made of feedbags--swear to God it's true. Just call her and she could tell you all about it. She lived Coal Miner's Daughter except that she couldn't sing and her dad didn't mine coal. But everything else was like her life. In fact, I don't know what my grandad did because I never thought to ask that and he died before I was born. All I know is that they were very, very poor. I could call her now, but it's too late. Anyway, one day at school before practice, I shit my pants. I was too embarassed to tell anyone, but less embarassed to walk around smelling like a diaper. After school, I went to Jr. Pro practice and whispered to my dad that I had pooped in my pants and needed to go home and that I couldn't practice. I think he laughed but was too annoyed at me at the time thinking it was a stunt. My parents thought I had done it on purpose thinking that I really must not want to play sports if I would shit my own pants over it. But really, it was an accident. Since then, if I wanted to stay in my room and draw, they let me. If I wanted to play star wars, they let me. In fact, they let me pursue anything I wanted because they knew what would happen and I'm sure my mother didn't want to deal with another load in my Garanimals. However, there were two more incidents. One involved me having to judge horses for 4-H and the other was a Christmas play where I accidentally pissed my pants on the church altar singing Ave Maria. 100% true.

Boy, shamecube, I'm the opposite of you. A colleague a few years ago told me I knew more about sports than any woman she'd ever met. Heck, I watch more sports than my husband! I'm really not athletically inclined, but I love watching other athletes. My family lived here in Omaha for 8 years when I was younger, so that's where I picked up college football. Then we moved to Kansas City, where I got interested in the NFL & MLB. I attended the Unviersity of Kansas, and that's where I got hooked on college basketball. I watched parts of 5 football games & 2 baseball games today. I'd watch almost no TV if it weren't for sports.

it depends on the sport, for me. The only sports I can really watch is football and Nascar (I know some people don't consider Nascar a sport) It doesn't really matter what kind of football it is, college, pro, arena; hell, I even watched some of that XFL. emphasis on some. I can't really watch anything else though.

Hey Shamecube thats a really sad story but I am glad that you found your way through.
My wife watches more football (soccer) than I do and even though I am the 'sporty type' ( I said sporty not spotty) I get bored before she does!!
P.S You guys should get into proper sports like Cricket and Rugby!!

nah... a proper sport is Formula 1 or World Rally Championship.
Nascar... :yuck: Drive fast turn left... oooh what fun.
Real drivers turn Right... sideways.

I too fall into the FAN category. But I stick with the manly sports of American Football (as if there's any other) and men playing with sticks on frozen surfaces.
A cousin of mine hooked me up with an NFL play-against-the-spread website that has brought me just about as much joy as FMD. It definately has brought me more anguish. If any of you are interested, I can set up a pool on the site and y'all can jump in. Let me know...

I agree, sports on TV sucks.
Truly SUCKS.
I never played sports as a kid. Made up for it by playing rugby in College. Well, I eventually got tired of proving how tough I was by getting trampled by women twice my size and gave that up.
I once had a converstation about Harry Potter with a guy who played hockey for the Red Wings, but he quite reasonable didn't discuss hockey with me.
I've never had a boyfriend who was into sports though. Thank the goddess.

Thanks for starting this thread shamecube, cos I'm not into sports either. When I was younger, I used to date guys that were not only into sports, but would go to gatherings at other people's houses to watch the game (and not just super bowl, but all games), and for some reason, the girlfriends were expected to make food and be present also. I didn't mind making food, but never understood why I needed to be there.
I'm dating someone now who is not that into science fiction or Farscape. He does like sports. We came to the conclusion a long time ago that it is not necessary for us to be joined at the hip and always have to do everything together. We don't live together (and I'm really liking that) so when the guys come over to his house to watch the game, I usually help him with the food and then I go do my thing.

I'm not a big sports fan either. I enjoy playing sports for fun, but for the most part I hate sitting around watching sports. I watch hockey and NASCAR occasionally, but I'm not a fanatic about any sports. My cousin races sprint cars, so once in awhile I go to a race, but other than that, I have better things to watch. Football or Farscape - is there really any contest??!!

And Grinner, riddle me this: When is JP Montoya going to win again??? Is Michael Schumacher secretly a Borg? I'm beginning to wonder.

And Grinner, riddle me this: When is JP Montoya going to win again??? Is Michael Schumacher secretly a Borg? I'm beginning to wonder. I think that JP Montoya has a mental problem right now. If you listen to his interviews... he understands that the BMW engine has more horsepower than the Ferrari engine... but I don't know if he has it in his head that he can win. It is like Ralf Shumacher... he is a fantastic driver... but living in the shadow of arguably the GREATEST F1 driver ever... probably killed something in him. He is a decent number 2... but I don't know. David Coultard is an amazing driver that just can't seem to buy luck. Kimi is going to be a world champion again... but Jacques Villenuvue is gone... I think if Montoya was in a Ferrari... forget about it... talk about a competition. Micheal and Montoya in Ferrari's... wow.
But then again... this is one of the most exciting seasons that I can remember... probably as good as the 1993 and 1994 seasons. To bad Senna died... we lost a ton of incredible races to that tragedy.

I'm a homer, meaning that I have an affinity for MN pro-sports of any flavor. College sports don't really interest me much. What really annoyed the heck out of me was Star Trek being pre-empted by Notre Dame football when I was in college. Now, before you get upset, realize that I attended college in N. Wisconsin. Why they would pre-empt anything for Notre Dame football is beyond me.:D

I love sports growing up, one of my dreams was to become a pro athlete. I really wanted to play for the Montreal Canadiens, unfortunately I'm a really slow skater. I played soccer, olympic handball (I made the team!), volleyball, football, basketball and baseball. I hated baseball, it is boring in comparisson to real sports. I was however possibly capable of making it pro with baseball, but I just couldn't stand sitting on a bench for most of the game.
I've always been competitive. I just can't stand watching sports on TV. I find it to be as mind numbing as watching paint dry. Occssionally I will watch the Olympics, or a soccer game, and if the Canadiens make the playoffs (not lately) I will watch that.
I really don't see the attraction, it's boring. To go to live events, that's diferent, if you pay for my seat and it's not in the next town over, I'll go, that's exciting. Except baseball, I don't even own a glove anymore, too boring, golf is more exciting, mowing the lawn gets me jumping faster.

I must clarify, I am a boy. I have a boyfriend that was in the Air Force and is a big sports fan. Total opposite of me, Maybe that's why we've been together so long.
I talk about my boyfriend a lot because I see him every day and we actually talk and stuff:) But his love of sports drives me absolutely nuts. He loves Farscape, though. Rygel is his favorite. Anyway, someone thought I was a girl and I am not a girl. I am a boy (just checked). Not that it matters. But I still hate sports.
Actually, I am man trapped in a Hynerian body. Maybe that's why he stays with me.
The end:)
P.S. I rule at videogames, though. I kick mucho ass at Soul Calibur.

I was never really good at sports at school, although I did my best. Went through various stages of liking sports, but in the end I had too many interests and something had to give...
Sports loss!!!!! was Sci-fi and music's gain (if I could put it that way!???)
I had to laugh when this British rugby club used the Bonzo Dog Band's song "Odd boy (who doesn't like sport)". Some people don't understand the meaning of irony do they? :rollin:

I never played sports in school (well, I did play hockey when I was in elementary school) but I do love to watch sports. In particular, I am a big football(American) fan but I prefer to watch football games in person because you can feel the energy at the stadium and be extremely loud.

I think I was nine when this happened and I remember it so vividly. I practically grew up on F1 because it was all my grandfather would watch after he picked me up from school. That day is so firmly entrenched in my mind I can remember practically everything I did. A big loss for racing - and he was a class act all the way.
Never liked Schumacher. I keep remembering how he tried to knock Villeneuve out of a race when they were competing for the championship in the last race of the season or something.

Not so much a knock, more of a SHUNT.
Do you remember the time M. Schumaker won a race from the pit-lane? If memory serves, he pitted in to serve out a time penalty!

Sly ****er!! that is technically legal. He did have a 27 second lead over the second place car... and he did cross the start/finish line before he reached his pit box... so... No one ever said that Ross Braun and Micheal were stupid. The Event Steward did not tell them they had to do the drive thru before a certain lap... so... legal.

Legal - well it was...I believe they changed the rules after Michael did that.

Sports on TV sucks! It is no substitute to actually being there. And the endless commentary just goes on and on and on :bored: which then cuts into the scintillating shows that are scheduled to follow.
I once wanted to watch something that was on at about 10.30 pm and there was a basketball game that had about 7 minutes to go ... it was about 11.20 pm when that game finished and then the station announces "We will now return you to our regular programming which is in progress."
Someone please explain to me how a game that has 7 minutes left to play runs for almost another hour?
I agree ... I hate sports ... on TV.

Note I said *sly* not cheat! I think it was changed at the end of the season so that for 2001 it would not be possible to win from pit lane. But even if Micheal would have served the drive thru on the lap previous... he still would have one because it was only a 'drive thru' penalty. If it had been a stop and go penalty... he might not have had enough time with 27 seconds... I think I remember that the annoucers saying that he would have needed 31 seconds for a stop and go.

Hhhm...the sports coverage over here is a bit different - for instance if you're watching a soccer match on the BBC, there are no adverts - you just have to put up with the commentators during half time. On the commercial stations it's not that different.
Usually what I do, if the match is on radio too, is turn down the TV sound, and listen to the radio instead (although sometimes it's out of sync, especially if I'm watching the game via a Digital transmission) The radio commentary is usually much less irritating.
Football (i.e. Soccer for those of you over in the USA) on TV serves a useful purpose.
I've been to many a football match, where I've seen an incident, and thought, that was never a free-kick, or thought my team played well.
And then I watch the game on TV, and see a completely different match!
Maybe I need glasses...

Yeah, Gumble and the other idiot on CBS are boring as hell and screw up everybody's names! You watch anyway in the hopes that somehow an errant throw will find it's way to the booth and hit one of them in the larynx. But it never does. :(
Because of the Madden video game series, I've come to appropriate his hysterically obvious comments like "the defense's job is to stop the ball." And weird, possibly senility-induced rambling like "That one had mustard on it." and "You used to be able to put stickum on your hands to catch those balls. Now they've got those gloves." Madden is great. Ace is the place for me. And whatever the hell Rent-A-Center's slogan is.
