Hey has anyone here seen Red Dwarf? I was always a huge RD fan, and Farscape has some pretty big similarities, probably unintentional, but ... I don't know where I am going with this... *sigh* I need to get better at this message board stuff.

Let me fly,
Far away from here,
Fun, fun, fun,
In the sun, sun, sun.

Oh yes... especially the DRD's in Farscape compared to the Skutters in RD!

Welcome to the board Lonecow :wavehi:
I haven't seen Red Dwarf in quite a while, so I'm not up on all the similarites, but I've read articles and interviews from the Farscape cast and crew that said there are all kinds of little pieces of Farscape that were borrowed from other scifi shows. It's kind of like a subtle tribute to all things science fiction.

oh yeah, that reminds me with why I started this thread.
There are so many similarities between the two, I would have though John would have made more references to Red Dwarf, but the only one I think I found was during that episode where Aryn is being chased by these guys for being an Assiasian, where they gave he the Living death, or whatever, John calls the living computer on their ship, "Holly". And I am not even sure if that is what he said.
anyway, that is all :)

Hm, I think I remember that... but I didn't connect it to Red Dwarf at the time...

I think one of the most obvious similarities is the name of the human character, Crichton, which is pronounced the same as Kryten from Red Dwarf, and of course Kryten is simply a "computerised" slang version of the name Crichton, which was the name of a famous butler/manservant.
Fromw hat I read on the Red Dwarf web site, the Red Dwarf writers visited to America and produced a pilot for an American verson of Red Dwarf, about the time that Farscape appeared. The pilot was not accepted, so the team came home.
But perhaps something of the pilot was picked up. In fact it is interesting (to me at least) that when I first saw Farscape (yesterday in fact), I remarked to my son how it seemed like Red Dwarf without (most of) the humour. A handful of disparate and unusual crew members lost in deep space in a large ship.
Other similarities (some already mentioned) would be the scutters, the pilot (holly?).

A few years back on SciFiUK, they had an interview with Brian Henson. In it he stated 3 shows that he wanted to emulate with Farscape: Star Trek, Babylon 5 and Red Dwarf.
Aside from Twice Shy being a total rip of Polymorph, the1989 Red Dwarf book had the crew attempting a slingshot maneouvre to get them back to Earth - exactly like Farscape used a decade later.

More than that. The producers thought they needed to "fix" the show. The writers circulated their script to the actors and they loved it, but the producers were dead set against it. There's a whole documentary about this on one of the DVDs -- a very entertaining look at what goes on behind the scenes.
Keep an eye out for it2i2 by Robert Llewellen. It's short (43 minutes) but great -- Danny even has a cameo in it!

Oh yeah. Twice Shy was a clear homage to Polymorph. In fact I think the writers even said so in the Illustrated Companion.
David Kemper said once that every single episode of Farscape is an homage to a movie or TV show, sometimes right down to the episode. Farscape never denied its influences and, in fact, celebrated them.
Polymorph being an excellent example of that. :)

I've wanted to make DRD/Scutter hybrid for ages...I do have a Scutter and DRD on my Christmas tree, though.

It doesn't look good at this point. Negotiations have broken down over the issue of curry and papadums -- the production has been blacklisted by all caterers until they settle the bill on 4,691 irradiated haggis.
