I have been trying unsuccessfully for quite a while to convert my sister and her fiance whom I live with. I just recently got season 1 for my 21st and have been going through it, though I still have most of 3&4 on VHS. I use the larger TV in our living room to watch it whenever I can, or i have to retreat to my room to use my small cracked TV.
Now i have mostly given up on my future brother-in-law since he constantly refers to D'Argo as Gimli, along with other things. But Sometimes when I'm watching my sister will also if she has nothing else to do, or just got home which was the case today.
She had come in about 15 minutes into Durka Returns, and stayed to watch through A Human Reaction. Apart from her comments on how Durka looks like Gandolf I didn't get much in the way of comment. Mind you she has seen some of Farscape before. the first time was When I was watching I E.T. last year when I started watching on the loaning program from a friend. She watched up untill Rygel bit a chunk out of Aeryn then stormed out.
Okay, so today we watch these and then I had to driver her to so place so she could workout (her car is in the shop). And I asked her about Farscape and she just said she didn't like it. After a bit of more nudging I got her to admit that she thought it was stupid...not quite what I was looking for. Some more nudging and she explained that it didn't make sense, that the acting was terrible. "They don't take thier characters seriously, and when they do it is over the top and melodramatic." She commented on the scene in A Human Reaction where J/A are in the hotel/apartment/whatever, they go on about how they are going to die then have sex. She says there was nothing leading up to it, it was just we are going to die, let's has sex. A always felt that that was a sort of clumsy scene but I wouldn't admit that to her.
All I could come up with was that this was just 2 eps after they got bought and they are trying to get into thier characters. She says they should know thier characters 14 eps into the series.
I'm a thespian I should have noticed these things. I notice it alot in other stuff why am I not so critical of Farscape? I've always been able to listen to my sister's opinions and understand where she is coming from, but this makes me sad. I love Farscape but She made me start to reconsider things in my head.
The only thing I could come up with was that the first season of STTNG was crap, and she replied that thought it was crap it was funny. I said Farscape is funny she dissagreed. I then spent the rest of the trip reacking my brains to find things was don't agree are funny. All i could come up with was that she dosen't like Terry Pratchett. She says she does like Pratchett but not Discworld. I asked her why she said she just couldn't get into it. I had to succed this sinc eI can't get into Wheel Of Time which she raves about.
HELP!!!!!

Or maybe your sister doesn't know what she's talking about. The scene in AHR isn't clumsy and the acting is great. I thought it was low key and subtle. Aeryn was calm. John was tense and sad. It worked really, really well to me. I don't know what she's talking about. In fact, AHR is one of the first FS episodes that I saw and really enjoyed it. And this is long before I was a fan of the show.
Sometimes people just don't get shows. They don't pay close enough attention or there's just something about a show they don't like. It doesn't always make sense and it certainly doesn't mean they're right and your're wrong.
We have a boatload of critics praising Farscape over the years on our side. Plus we have three Saturn awards for the show and one for Ben on his acting. Just ignore your sister and feel smug that you have better taste than her. :)

Wellll....
I think that Farscape IS a little 'hard to take' when it's new to ya. Each episode does tend to have some kind of 'ewwwww' moment; I think that's part of what makes it charming, in a blissfully childish way-- but at the same time, somebody more familiar with Pickard's well groomed, well-run Enterprise IS gonna storm out, when they see Rygel forcing clam bits into the mouth of a crooked doctor, after biting off the end of his nose... or cringe in horror as the crew applies Dargo's vomit to their hands so they can control his ship.
But trying to force them into watching it, and asking them why they hate it, bla bla.. constantly pushing it on them... that won't work. It will just turn them off even more.
Here's how I managed to get a few people watching, who, at first, didn't like what they saw:
I told them it was like a dream... part beautiful fantasy, part confusing nightmare. Admit it, yes... Farscape IS pretty creepy sometimes, and kind of silly too... but it's also very beautiful, very moving... as a dream can be.
I would tell people to give it 3 or 4 episodes in a row. I'd promise them if they really tried to follow the story, and watched everything in the show for 3 eps-- they would 'get it' . Farscape's strength is in its buildup... when you know the background-- even just a LITTLE of it, you start seeing how the events & images relate to each other... and that's when you get sucked into the story.

Yep, Spedoinkel, it's HARD to believe, but not everybody gets it. Both my brothers and my sister will watch Farscape when I put it in THEIR DVD player, but they won't go out of their way to watch it on their own. They all think the show is just "okay". Sigh. I don't know what went wrong with them. We all came from the same womb, and we all were raised in the same house, with the same parents. What can ya do??

Woot! I figured it out!
Farscape Rocks!
When you look at the scene in AHR i the hotel it might seem like the sex came out of nowhere but look back to earlier scenes where Crighton tries to get Aeryn to go with him but she's not ready, when Crichton leaves and Aeryn is standing in the doorway almost crying, when Crighton goes into the examination room and looks at the unconcious gaurd and aeryn comes up behind and the talk about trusting one another and what they should do next.
Woot, I say, WOOT!

I hope my sister likes it. She's coming to visit me for her birthday, and I'm going to show it to her.
She's coming to visit me! For her 18th birthday! That's a big one, and she wants to spend it with me!
(We didn't really like each other until the last year or so, and now I'm constantly amazed by how bright and funny and interesting she is. I'm glad we're friends).

Okay, confession time....<<looks around furtively, and prepares to duck>>
I didn't get Farscape the first couple of times I watched it, and I watched it on purpose!
I thought the acting in 'Crackers' was over-the-top...(big, BIG joke on me when I finally understood WHY it was supposed to be that way).
I thought the special effects ranged from cool to dopey.
I didn't like Pilot. <<hangs head in shame>>
But there was something.... something that made me say, well I'll stick with it for a few more episodes.
And then....BAM. A repeat of 'Undressed' helped everything make sense, and I jumped into the last four eps of season three with both feet.
One month later, I was on amazon.com (for the first time ever, mind you) to buy all of season 1. I stayed home Memorial Day weekend just to tape the chain reaction.
Before Farscape, if you had told me I'd be up in arms one day over a television show---and composing singing telegrams and joining an online community and seriously thinking about attending a convention full of people I've never met---I'd have laughed myself silly.
But I can sympathize with you competely---I have turned some friends on to the secret of Farscape, but others have thought I've competely lost my mind.
Fair enough. I am reminded that I used to make fun of my sister for watching X-Files, before it hooked me too.
Maybe instead of trying so hard to convert THEM, you should just enjoy FS for you. You've got lots of friends here to hang with and chat about FS with...... and you know family----can't live with them, can't live without them.
Now that my reputation is completely shredded, I'm gonna go find a nice dead Leviathan settlement to hide in.....

Yup.
And for the record I have just been watching Farscape in the living room and not forcing it on them. I do try to talk it up every once in a while but I guess it is time to move on.

it took me a long time to like rygel.
and the bodily functions used to really bother me. now i think they're hilarious. i would say i've immatured.
i was hooked from the first episode i saw (Thank God Its Friday Again) though. But you shouldn't be ashamed.

Spedoinkel, try not to let it get to you too much. YOU like it, an awful lot of people here, there and everywhere like it, and we can't all be wrong! I think it's kind of normal that we want the people WE like to like it too, but it's just not going to happen that way for everybody.
It's not going to be everybody's favorite. A lot of people just won't ever "get it". And that's ok. I hate sports! (I think there was a thread on that subject somewhere), I find watching them to be unutterably boring. But that doesn't make them "awful" for someone else.
I tried pretty hard to get my daughter to "like" Farscape. The more I pushed, the less she wanted to watch it. I had to make myself stop "wanting" her to like it, and now she occasionally will watch with me. She says she could like the "relationship" between John & Aeryn, she just can't get past the "sci fi". But she does occasionally ask me questions now. BAD TIMING SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
For example, I made a square for the quilt project, depicting the wedding ring on the heap of crystals and she said, "you mean, people from other universes get married? I thought that was a human thing." (I just said, yeah, but John IS human, and he wanted to do it. Didn't mention they had just been "neutralized".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
END OF SPOILER
So if your sister doesn't like it, she doesn't like it. Who knows, she might change her opinion someday. But regardless of whether she does or not, YOU LIKE IT. And why shouldn't you? Don't let her make you question your own opinions. She has a right to her opinion, and you do to yours. Enjoy the show, and don't worry, because, really, you are in good company! How can Matt Roush, other professional "critics", AND ALL OF US be wrong?

I thought the acting in 'Crackers' was over-the-top...(big, BIG joke on me when I finally understood WHY it was supposed to be that way).I'm a little new and a lot slow on the uptake...what is the BIG joke? Also, what was so important about everyone mailing in crackers to Sci-Fi last year???
As far as me liking this show, I hated it when my husband started watching it. Something about the puppets just annoyed me...that is until I started paying attention (yeah, it was that whole John Aeryn thing...what can I say..I'm a sappy girl). Now it's hard for me to look at the puppets as puppets instead of actual aliens. That and the fact that the cast was Australian. I'm English (I've lived here most of my life though) and always thought the Australian shows (Neighbors, etc) were lower budget, had less talented actors and so I was instantly judgemental. Can I just say that Australia is the very next place that I want to visit now!?! I have 100% underrated that country! Yeh, there are some episodes may not be as good as others but when taken together, this show is and always will be amazing. If we can all keep the spirit (Goddess???) alive- even if we never again see the hallowed hollows of Moya's hallways- I believe that this show will go down in history.AMEN

snofall, the joke was---they were all out of their minds. Going nuts, loopy, looney, fweakin' insane.
So they were acting like it. I just didn't understand that at the time (the being-driven-crazy part)
Plus, John was *already* being driven insane, although he didn't know it yet, and it was for a completely different reason....
Yep...I can't pinpoint when Pilot became Pilot and not a big ugly buglike thing, but I bawled like a baby all throughout 'The Way We Weren't.' So I hope he forgives me.

Thing about "Crackers don't Matter" --minor spoiler...
--------
the Moya crew are being subjected to some "mental" influence, making them act unreasonable & paranoid, etc.. But the story doesn't reveal that, out-right. No science-officer, handing out a rational report on the danger they face... No, the characters have to figure out on their own, that something's wrong with them...
It's easy to see-- if that episode was the only one you ever saw, and you didn't watch to the end, you'd come away with a pretty negative opinion of the characters.

I have to tell you that you are not alone. I gave all of my eps to my best friend and his wife and you know what was the first thing he told me? That he didn't like the opening theme!!! What the frell!!! I love the opening theme of Farscape, the chanting the music....uhh ahh :D
Anyway, they were not hooked, they watched it all and in order, but i guess it was because they hadn't anything better to watch (no cable at their house).
My cousing kinda likes it, but he has not watched all the eps and i don't see him interested in watching the rest. Sometimes i think i'm the only scaper in Panama :(

I didn't start watching FS till they were reruns on SciFi every night at 9:00(pacific time) so I was out of sequence. I had actually seen this episode then and so being impartially ignorant didn't really understand too much of what was going. Then when I did rent ti from Netflix, in order, because I'd already seen it I didn't really pay too much mind to it. Now it makes more sense...mostly.

I always sing the praises of Farscape to my friends but I never rammed it down their throats. Before I started buying my DVD collection, I gave a few of my VHS tapes of recorded episodes for them to watch but never got much reaction from them if they liked it or not. To be honest, I don't think they even brothered to view them.
One year later, I got into making Farscape music videos and asked for their opinion in how the finished video played . Four videos later, they started asking if they could borrow some of my Farscape DVDs. As the lesson shows, if you can't convert your friends to Farscape one way, then try another.

Take this for what its worth, but if your sister is more into STTNG, or reality shows, most people that watch them are not as deeper thinkers as Farsape fans. Farscape is a deeper show with more meaning, it is NOT over the top or too complex to understand. However, it does require that individuals user more than one brain cell to watch it, as opposed to all the other stuff on tv that do not need any brain cells at all.

It sounds like your sister is just trying to push your buttons now. Just ignore her, she'll get bored and go away. :) She's gone over to the "I'll never like it no matter how good it is just to prove I'm right" stage. :)

I believe the best tactic would be to totally ignore her and her fiance and set up a rule of "no funny comments during my show!". Then go ahead and enjoy your Farscape and one day, while you're having the most hysterical laughter of the most heart-wrenching tears falling down your face... they'll get the idea that it's not just another show.
With Farscape everyone has a different click that makes them become fans. For some the click happens during Premiere, for others much, much later. For me it happened at the end of Season 3 and I only became a die-hard fan after John Quixote. So let them take their time and don't push it down their throats "oh, it's the best thing since sliced bread" - this part may not become apparent at first sight and they'll just think you're crazy and not take it too seriously.:D

If she likes comedy, show her "Beware of Dog" (NO one hates a Vork). :D
If she likes romance, show her the Look At The Princess trilogy.
My friend is similar
It took me ages to persuade her that Farscape wasn't like Star Trek and that it was humourous and such, and begged her to give it a chance. Anyway I made a deal with her that if she didn't like it after 3 epp's I do what she wanted.
Anyway she loves it now although I am always explaining things to her...and while I am explaining she misses the part that ends up explaining!!

her loss.
i'm actually kind of sick of trying to explain or defend Farscape to people. I'm at the point where i don't care and they are missing out. but the best thing is to probably wait and let your sister watch them on her own. I also find that watching Farscape on TV rather than dvd is more satisfying for first time viewers. Maybe it legitimatizes it with commericials? Plus, watching it during its lifespan on scifi has more a 'feel' and 'buzz' to it for first time viewers. hopefully the show will frelling come back soon! also pacing and waiting for the next show has an effect.
our entertainment industry is becoming more and more stale. nothing but remakes and sequels. come on, Teen Wolf series? remake of the Hills Have Eyes? Catwoman? ....don't even get me started on reality tv. original ideas are hard to come by and often people discount them. fine, just go watch survivor and leave me the F@#$ alone then.
Sure farscape has its slow episodes and they made some rookie mistakes, i still consider it high caliber quality entertainment.
ps - the actors are superb and i relish every second that characters like pilot and rygel can out act 'real' people. i'll take rygel over any cast members on enterprise or any other shitty show on tv anyday.

A friend of mine who never watches scifi finally saw Farscape in Season 3. The first ep she saw was Eat Me, which I think is a terrible first ep for newbies. But she loved it! She loved Chiana, the horror-movie aspect of the ep, and the humor. She thought Crichton was too "I'm so good looking, look at me" and she didn't like him at first. But it was enough to keep coming back, which she did, and grew to love Crichton and all the characters. She admitted to crying after IPIA.
You just never know who will fall in love with Farscape and who won't. My other friend, who loves Scifi, especially Trek, just won't get into Farscape. I say "won't" because she seems to enjoy it--she just seems very reluctant to admit that it's good. Maybe because Trek is always compared negatively to Farscape. I don't konw. But I thought she was a natural to like and she doesn't.
I've never heard anyone criticize the show for the acting, though.

Shen isn't in to reality show and the only shows they watch are sports, Friends, Scrubs, and OC(which I actually like)
I would play LATP if i had it but alas as i said befor all I have are S1 3&4 (four eps are missing from 3&4 collectively) And since I have the only working VCR I watch 3&4 in my room, because it is bulit into my tiny cracked TV.

just to add my 2 cents worth to this...
don't feel too bad about your sister not liking the show.. i have 3 sisters and none of them like it.. neither do my parents... in fact, i have an uncle who likes it, and that's pretty much it for my family..
my husband, son and i have watched since the premiere.. fell in love with it on the very first episode.. actually, we knew we would love it just watching the previews for it!!! but that's OUR taste.. i don't begrudge my family for not liking the show.. sure, they've laughed at me for watching the show and working to help save the show... then i explained this was something that was important to me and they backed off.. now they tolerate it with only sparing comments... and i have to give my dad credit-- he did attempt to watch it... it just wasn't his "cup o tea"... that's fine with me... he loves the sopranos and i can't stand that show.. different people, different tastes..
and although we all love this show, we still have collectively different tastes... ask your sister and her fiance to respect your rights to watch the show you want to watch the way you do for them.. they will either start sneaking in to see more or they won't.. you can't control their decisions or what they think, so don't try and don't get upset over it.. it's really not worth it.. as someone else said, all the critics and all the fans can't be wrong while these two are right... doesn't add up, my friend.. so when you're feeling out of sorts about the show or campaign or they're giving you a hard time, bring it to your Farscape family--- we're always here!! :D

yeah i remember the day my girlfriend told me Farscape was cancelled. i didn't believe it, i couldn't believe. it was even harder for me to try and convince people that it was the best show on tv and it was not geeky at all. she used to make fun of it all the time. i was like WTF. did you even watch it before?!! NOW, it is her favorite show. :aok: slowly getting my roomate into it too. its fun to rewatch the show and see him laugh, he thinks the show is really funny. all he pretty much knows is trek, so he has to adjust.
i was suprised to hear when my girlfriend told me her brother liked the show. he's like this tough guy who hates EVERYTHING. he only watches sports as far as i know. she told me he was like "why the F%ck did they cancel that show? it was so good. I caught the reruns and got hooked one summer. F%!@#king idiots....."

Sounds like a difference in taste to me. I myself am used to most people not only not sharing my tastes, but also ridiculing them. I live in a place that is big on sports, especially basketball, to the point where sports fandom feels almost mandatory. Sci fi fandom, on the other hand, does not enjoy such a high level of acceptability--at least among certain groups. Luckily, some family members on my dad's side are also big sci fi fans, which must be where I get it from. In fact, my cousin was the one who pushed me to start watching Farscape. I also have several friends who are into sci fi/fantasy/horror. So I take comfort in the fact that there *are* communities where my tastes are appreciated. I think the key is to be confident in your own tastes and know that there are *a lot* of other people who share them.
