Sci Fi is Tops in Germany in First Month of Launch

11 October 2003, 10:00am ET

CANNES, France, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Sci Fi Germany, having launched on Premiere September 1, has already become one of the country's most popular channels. It in fact was the most watched channel in Germany on launch day (Sep. 1), and has been riding high ever since.

The motion picture "Stargate" and the subsequent series "Stargate SG-1" have been the most successful programs to date, with the film reaching a peak viewership of more than 125,000 viewers, and the series is consistently drawing more than 100,000 viewers.

Another popular series on Sci Fi Germany is "Andromeda" which is averaging around 80,000 viewers nightly.

In all, Sci Fi Germany, in one short month, has been seen by more than 2.1 million viewers, representing a 7% share of the market. These numbers are extraordinary for German television. Advertisers are also excited about the channel as in its first month, more than 77% of Sci Fi viewers are in the prime target group of A14-49. Sci Fi viewers are comprised of 54% men and 46% women.

Wolfram Winter, managing director Sci Fi Germany said, "We couldn't have wished for a better start. We're especially delighted to have realized our reach forecasts in the case of the series. This shows that viewers have accepted our programming structure and the related brand philosophy."

Ich bin crapola!

I just don't get it. Who's running this carnival anyway - is it the Vivendi asshats who are running this new German expansion, or is it some other Deutche crew?

I ask this because it hasn't even been two weeks since we read about some Parisian Vivendi suit exclaiming his gratitude over the sale of the SciFi Channel because they "never saw that it had the potential to be really profitable". But now this - the Germans getting a taste, and jumping all over it - and it's not even the good stuff.

I find it entirely ironic, that as soon as Vivendi sells their stake in Universal, suddenly, someone somewhere sees the global potential in all of this - internaltional marketing, liscensure, syndication, etc.

Good job, guys! What are they going to do when they run out of 'Stargate' to show them?
(Just whip out a few more cancelled television shows...)
