Well since the poll indicated that all but one voter thought a fic recommendation thread was a good idea, let's go for it!

My first little gem is actually a pair of short ficlets by CaptainCraisinYourFace, courtesy of unohoo's site (lots of great fic there, you might want to browse awhile).

Blurb:
Think about what might happen when a Sun-Crichton child started school.....

Rating:
No worries.

This is, I think, the very first Farscape fan fic I read.:book: Written by KernilCrash, it's longish, and definitely Alternate Universe. You can read more in Crash's story notes. Enjoy.:)

Rating: There's a whole world of John-hurt here. Rated R for torture, and the last part is NC-17.:eh:

Since we're heading into a weekend, here's a longer fic by KernilCrash to keep you occupied.

I think this was the second fic I ever read at Kansas (the first one was...um...a little bit *steamy* which I wasn't expecting). This is the fic that made me sit up and take respectful notice of fanfic in general.... it blew me away with its elegance.

Blurb: If the Ancients interest you, and you find the idea of unrealized realities intriguing, this Crichton-based fic might be right up your alley.

Rating: No worries. Safe to read at work.

Here is fave #4.... It is one of the very first experiences I had with fan fiction at all, back when I had first discovered Farscape (*sigh*) and had been lurking on the Dom, too afraid to post. :comp:

It's written by PKAT (PKAmmoTroop) and I just HAD to print it out and bring it home to chuckle over some more. My grandpa and two cousins are in the Army, but anyone with any kind of imagination should be able to picture this one nicely.

I've given you the link straight to PKAT's site, so if you like this one the whole archive is there at your fingertips. Things do take a determined turn after Black Friday, when PKAT enlists us all to fight with a Leviathan's crew against The Diller.... :boom:

Blurb: Safety is our number one priority! :stalks:
Rating: If I could remember the chemical formula for glucose, I'd put it right here (is it C6H12O6?).

Well, if anyone's looking for something fairly short and shippy, I have this one:

http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=16;action=display;threadid=7585

Yes, it's shameless self-promotion but I really enjoyed writing it and others seemed to enjoy it too. There are two companion pieces to it as well. They are in the archives at Kansas under T if anyone's interested.

I've got other stuff scattered around too...not all shippy. A mixture of a bit of everything including some AU. If anyone wants to know where to find it, you can pm me or email me. (twich@watchfarscape.com)

Thanks for the chance to plug. :)

StarsGoBlue, you are one hell of a critic..

I think I'll read anything you give the thumbs up!

You know, shippy stuff is fine, but I find the authors have a distressiong tendency to really distort the characters, or to have an overwhelming desire to dissapate the very tension that makes the relationships of interest in the first place.

Darth, I wrote a non-shippy episode length fic called A Pound of Flesh...Give or Take. It got some pretty good reviews if you want to give it a shot. It's here in the Infinite Realities Forum..and on Kansas in the archives.

LOL Twich.... imagine if TPTB had used 'I'm Too Sexy for my *Pants*' in the CK scene with the Brindz Hound!!! :rollin:

**************************************************

Tonight's fic pick is something quite different. It's not an easy read, and it's definitely not for everyone. It's fairly short, but rated R for graphic treatment of sophisticated subject matter (one of those topics that has been deemed off-limits here at FMD).

Personally, I think---despite its controversial POV, despite its 'dark' theme---that it is brilliant.

The author (cofax) took a character I admire and adore and had them make a gut-wrenching decision some would find abominable.

Nonetheless, I feel the fic has remained true to the character--- or one possible permutation of that character, perhaps.

I could understand why the character chooses that particular path, given the time and under those circumstances, and I could accept the validity that the character might truly feel and behave in that manner.

I don't think this one will bore anyone---it will stir passionate reactions. But if you're looking for lighthearted fic, or more episode-based fic, this is not it. If you thought 'Prayer' or 'A Constellation of Doubt' were too dark, you won't like this.

I'm posting the fic link from Leviathan rather than Kansas--- I just feel the somber background of Leviathan is more suited to the atmosphere of the fic. Silly maybe, but then again maybe not.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Hopefully, this will make up for it. It's a fic by officersun524 called 'The Future or Something Like It.'

You know, it isn't the shippy part that gets me... it's that somehow Aeryn seems to be acting out of character in most shippy-fic.

Aeryn Sun is a lot more like a guy when it comes to relationships than many guys I know.

But the other characterizations were pretty damned in character... 'specially Harvey.

You know, it isn't the shippy part that gets me... it's that somehow Aeryn seems to be acting out of character in most shippy-fic.

I know what you mean, Darth Buddha, although I do actually enjoy some of the so-called "shippy" fanfic. Here are two "shippy" stories (sort of--at least they feature John & Aeryn) that, in my opinion, really capture Aeryn's alien character very well. BE WARNED, THEY ARE BOTH RATED NC-17, for adult, graphically described sexual situations, so don't read them if you find that sort of thing offensive, OR are younger than 17!. I will say that I did not find the sex gratuitous, but important in the context of both plots, especially the first one.

The first one is a "Human Reaction" filler by "searose":
http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=36;action=display;threadid=1579

The second is set sometime after "Bad Timing". Also rated NC-17 by the author ("Regala Electra) for "violence, language":
http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=36;action=display;threadid=7473

Both are very well-written. Don't read them in "public".

Shipscat
11-06-2003, 08:18 PM
Wow-thanks, Stars. I had no idea you were plugging my fic in here!

I agree that it's difficult to handle Aeryn without making her more like a normal human woman..and sometimes that's sort of the point of a fic, to introduce Aeryn to emotions and relationships and well, girl stuff, to some extent. That's why the first slower part of New to this World was so slow..because I was having too much fun introducing Aeryn to Earth to get to the action.

Anyway, at the new Bunny board there are a lot of writers who write shippy (okay, not everything is shippy, especially me, I have a bizarre sense of humor) and they work very, very hard at maintaining character and just trying to write a good story.

And here are two more I really liked, rated PG--a little twist on "Aeryn", both by "UCSBdad":

http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=16;action=display;threadid=9090

and it's sequel:
http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=16;action=display;threadid=9914

And for a change of pace, and a quick chuckle, another one by UCSBdad that he labels "Anti Shippy, Aeyrn":
http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=16;action=display;threadid=7640
(this one has got to be a G or maybe a PG on the last page).

StarsGoBlue
11-06-2003, 11:06 PM
jayelsee, I love those not-quite-Aeryn fics of UCSBDad's. That 's the fun thing about AU (alternate universe) fics, that they can explore storylines not addressed in the eps or that take the plot and/or characters in a different direction... :ewink:

And thanks for the link to searose's fic! Wow! That was....umm...well let's just say I was tempted to put the a/c on, and it's November! But not at all gratiutous, as you said... excellent storytelling in addition to much shippiness.. :aok:

'She had pulled a rifle on him; she did not get chocolate.' LOL...

The BT fic, I'm afraid, made me queasy... but it was very well written and effective (*too* effective for my prone-to-motion-sickness stomach!). I could see J&A in that sort of career-choice, so to speak....

Now for anyone who is pining about the ending to officersun524's 'The Future or Something Like It' :scare: :irate: :fwap: (I will admit it's a screamer), let me reassure you that there are more installments.

The most talented Kernezelda rounds out the story with 'Future's End' and 'A Shared Future' that ultimately concludes in a very satisfying manner. You can read them here:

http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/3/futuresend.html

http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/3/ashared.html

I'm also partial to this fairy-tale-like short fic of Kernezelda's, 'In the Country Of.' It's somewhat reminiscent of John Quixote...

http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/4/inthe.html

Give it a read and let me know what you think? :book:

AND.... I absolutely *MUST* plug a mind-blowing, shattering fic by Kerlin, 'Threnody for Innocence.'

It takes an embittered, obsessed character that I could not STAND (little redemptive value evident on the surface) and by the end of the fic I was whimpering in empathy. I will never be able to look at that character in the same judgmental way, ever again. :(

Please, please check it out. You won't be sorry!

http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/4/threnodyfor.html

I am reading the "Futures" stories now, found the sequels/companions after you posted the first one here, StarsGoBlue. I found 5 of them, two by OfficerSun and 3 by Kernezelda.

Oooh, jayelsee, I liked it! Not what I expected to happen, but I'm glad things turned out the way they did. :D

Here's one in return. Learned a new word today: delitescent. It means 'hidden' or 'secret.'

This fic by analise is called 'The Delitescent Doorway.' It's AU (alternate universe) but I won't say more than that for fear of spoiling it. It's what could've happened instead of AHR or Terra Firma....

I do want to caution readers that you won't run across any familiar characters for a bit---but hang with it, you will be glad you did. The beginning exposition is absolutely vital to the story.

You might want a kleenex or two handy for the ending.... it hurts, but in such a good way.

jayelsee
11-09-2003, 10:56 AM
Oh, I loved "The Delitescent Doorway". It's going on my own personal "highly recommended" list. I'll have to look for others by analise. So well-constructed. Poignant, sad, and joyful. Delitescent. How I do love words. I am so envious of all these talented writers!

Here's another AU story, one by cofax, about a future that might have been if things had taken a different path somewhere in the s3 storyline: "The Money-Changer's Tale". Also a little sad, but with "hope". http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/4/themoneychangers.html

Now, I really must do something other than read fan fic for awhile. So much I need to be doing. Like finishing a quilt square for the shippy quilt project, writing a letter to NBC, watching the rest of S4 on the tape stlscape made for me. And I really need to go shopping for a 2nd DVD player so's I can watch my FS DVDs in the living room AND the bedroom.

A Matter of Trust, by KNS, PG-13
It is a two parter, 'bout Aeryn mostly, but also Stark. I really like this one; but missed it the first time around. Please read, it gets really good, I like the author's jumping from past to present.
Part One http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=34;action=display;threadid=6656
Part Two http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=34;action=display;threadid=7202

Taking it Home, by Speedbump, R?
Scroll down the page untill you hit the author's name and there is the fic. It is long and is AU from beginning of season two, so there is a lot of stuff completely off. But the storyline and the characterization is great: it is a John going to Earth fic (notice not "John going home").

I have really enjoyed this thread. It hasn't done my sleep any good (ain't that great English?? :D ) Anyway, I've just started to read the recommendations from the beginning of the thread - so I foresee alot of sleepless nights happening around here. Thank goodness, after I get these Christmas presens wrapped, I can pretty much read to my heart's content.

What a joy!!! Thank you all so much for your wonderful recommendations. You probably won't hear from me much, as I devour these novels. Its been soooo addictive!! I have to get my husband to make this computer a little bit more "cuddly" - so I can curl up with it like a good book instead of stuck here in this lousy chair. But I'll suffer, the reads are soooo worth it!!

Thanks again - you've been helping me through my Farscape drought. So nice to read new adventures for the crew that are true to the characters!!

Ohh - gotta wrap these presents so I can get the opportunity to read again!!:aok: :smokin:

Especially if you have fond memories of 80's music. :rollin:

Second-best only because the best is stolen directly from OOTM, and you should read it yourself for the greatest effect. :ewink:

First off, here is a link to Redbeard's out-dated top picks, it has Speedbump's "Take It Home", Anne's "Touch" (scroll down to the bottom of her fic and it takes you to the sequel, there are about five of them), Analise's "One Spilt Second", and Ann H.'s "24 Hour Pass".

RPF (real people fic) is, IMHO, icky. But this fic isn't exactly RPF, although it is based on real people, and it treats them respectfully (mostly). And it's danged funny.

So if you're in the mood for a chuckle, head on over to Redbeard's archive and read The Browder Strikes Back: A Froonium Fic, by UKTechGirl.

The story doesn't have a direct link, but it's the fourth one down on the page and will pop up in a separate window.

Relaxing at home, drinking mimosas and reading fanfic--what better way to spend a lazy New Year’s day!—decided to compile this “list” of all the recommendations so far on this thread. Settled on two categories, basically “comedy” or “drama”. If you don’t like my list, my categories, my editing of commentaries, or if I missed or mis-credited any “recommendations”, well, blame it on the mimosas!

Each category posted in separate replies, to follow.

Don’t forget to nominate your favorite fics for the 2004 Fan Fic awards. Nominations close January 10, 2004. Here's the link.

”A Taste of Tomorrow” by KernilCrash
http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=34;action=display;threadid=3995
“….here's a longer fic…to keep you occupied…..I think this was the second fic I ever read at Kansas (the first one was...um...a little bit *steamy* which I wasn't expecting). This is the fic that made me sit up and take respectful notice of fanfic in general.... it blew me away with its elegance……Blurb: If the Ancients interest you, and you find the idea of unrealized realities intriguing, this Crichton-based fic might be right up your alley……Rating: No worries. Safe to read at work.

These two were also recommended by AuroraSun (see alphabetically earlier links):
“I, Crichton” and “New to This World” (where the main action happens) by shipscat
“…..picks up the storyline after 'Eat Me' and envisions a very different future for both Crichtons. There's Scorpius.... and a baby.... and Earth... and not necessarily what you think.

'The Future or Something Like It.' by officersun524

“Blurb: 'Aeryn returns to Moya and makes a shocking discovery.'
Set around 'Promises' time, but alternate-universe. Rating: Some violence...maybe some language. PK's ain't the nicest folks sometimes….You can trust me on this though, once you start reading it, you won't be able to stop.”

“The most talented Kernezelda rounds out the story with 'Future's End' and 'A Shared Future' that ultimately concludes in a very satisfying manner. You can read them here:

'The Delitescent Doorway.' by analise

“It's AU (alternate universe) but I won't say more than that for fear of spoiling it. It's what could've happened instead of AHR or Terra Firma....I do want to caution readers that you won't run across any familiar characters for a bit---but hang with it, you will be glad you did. The beginning exposition is absolutely vital to the story…. You might want a kleenex or two handy for the ending.... it hurts, but in such a good way.”

”Xenophilia” by cofax

“…something quite different. It's not an easy read, and it's definitely not for everyone. It's fairly short, but rated R for graphic treatment of sophisticated subject matter…The author took a character I admire and adore and had them make a gut-wrenching decision some would find abominable…I don't think this one will bore anyone---it will stir passionate reactions. But if you're looking for lighthearted fic, or more episode-based fic, this is not it. If you thought 'Prayer' or 'A Constellation of Doubt' were too dark, you won't like this….

I absolutely *MUST* plug (this) mind-blowing, shattering fic…It takes an embittered, obsessed character that I could not STAND (little redemptive value evident on the surface) and by the end of the fic I was whimpering in empathy. Thanks Jayelsee for the compiled list, a great summary of great fics. There are soo many well-written stories out there. It will keep you up at night.

Only one from me:

Home, by Scorpsik, Rated PG?
Tale about Scorpius after Incubius, or during. It is a character study. I mostly go for long AU fic, but the writer's understanding of Scorpy really pulled me in.

"Night Shift" a first fic, by "Hank" Rated G

"Against the Grain" by Thea, NC-17

Yes, it is NC-17, but with some plot and character-related connections. Filler for after "LATP" trilogy.

****THIS REC REFERENCES A SPOILER RUMOR FOR THE MINSERIES****

Here's one hot off the presses, so to speak, that I personally think is a perfect setup for the 'coughcoughPeacekeeperWarscough' rumored theme of the miniseries...

By the talented :kitty: shipscat, 'Promises to Keep,' in which Aeryn explains her absence and return to Moya. Rated G, I think... spoilers for season 4, mainly Promises and Bad Timing.

It has come to my attention that a significant number of Scapers had a Monday from hezmana today.

So, in an effort to give everyone something to smile about, here's the link to 'Cover Story,' a short Terra Firma filler fic, by pktechgirlus.

Rated G (for giggle--this one's especially for the jirls), short but sweet, a snap to sneak in at work.

by PDXScaper

Summary: When the end is in sight, there are things you will know.
Rating: G
Story Notes: Spoilers through Infinite Possibilities: Icarus Abides.
Disclaimer: Am not, never have been, affiliated with Henson, etc. Characters are not mine, although I wish almost every day I was brilliant enough to have thought them up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You will know that everything slipped away in a flash of lethal blue light. You will see your life slide through your fingers and try to count each grain of sand to slow down time.

The moment will come when the world around you dims to dark. But you will still hear her voice, feel her touch...and know her love. You will take that with you, carry it inside, confident in the knowledge that you will be mourned. Missed. Remembered.

Will they know...that you would do it all over again to keep them from harm? Maybe not.

But you will know.

It's a satisfying length, so settle in with some popcorn or icecream---but be mindful of your monitor. Consider that a spew warning!

And one more rec for tonight, because it suits my mood: The achingly beautiful, hauntingly sad 'The Work of Her Hands' by Robyn Bender.

Set directly after Infinite Possibilities: Icarus Abides, this fic is a companion to Robyn's "Talyn Suite" series, and is rated R for adult themes.

Speaking of missed, I don't think I've rec'd this fic before... and it is so deserving.

There's been a lot of speculation about what happened to Aeryn while she was away... Imloco2 has written a particularly gripping story in 'Everything Old.'

Rated R for "a little sex," it could be---should be?---canon. Definitely a must-read.

Well, seeing that a few have dove into self-promotion of their work, I have one that is somewhat worthy of reading. It's a "Farscape" fic, set in the real world and inspired by the lawsuit brought up to Sci-Fi from a woman who was on their show "Scare Tactics" (as well as a couple of "Law & Order" episodes). Understand that when I wrote it, I was venting out some of the hatred that I had for Sci-Fi. I don't want to sue them, nor do I promote suing Sci-Fi (though I have come to the decision that when I become a film director, that as a part of my contract in the future, I will not allow Sci-Fi to show any of my science fiction, fantasy or horror films on their channel due to the cancellation of the show). Nevertheless...

Title: Where Hope Remains
Rating: PG-13
Premise: A "Farscape" fan sees a lawyer in hopes of suing Sci-Fi over the cancellation of "Farscape".

Hello there, its been a while! :D

I come bearing fics to tide you over the long weekend... enjoy!

First is a clever adventure piece by ChiMonkey, 'Three Monkeys.' Set between Crichton Kicks and What Was Lost, it features Crichton, Chi, one very astute Hynerian Dominar, and the inscrutable Sikozu Shanu.

http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=14035

Next is one for those who like their Farscape angsty... a powerfully gripping read by Sarahjane, 'Weekend.' This Terra Firma filler fic isn't for everyone---it's rated R because some very bad things happen, but fans of angst will find it impossible to look away.

http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=13952

And finally, in honor of Valentine's Day...Farscape is the show where even the puppets get some! And no one writes it better than the irrepressible Kixxa and her short but sweet take on Rygel's love life, 'Trying the Narrow View.' Rated PG-13 with a spew warning, just in case. :D

Here are two future fic, by Maayan, that I really like. I read them some time ago, and then re-read them again last night. They're just as good as the first time. I don't think they have been mentioned here yet.

"Sleep While I Drive" is the one you should read first.
http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/3/sleepwhile.html

"Two is Swinging" is a "sequel" to "Sleep While I Drive", although it actually comes before SWID chronologically. You'll uderstand why it's a "sequel" after you read them.

Ok, I found one website that I really like - it's basically an organization of mostly John hurt/comfort fics.

http://www.lewiswrite.com/pages/farscape.htm Hopefully this link works - I have no idea how to correct it if it doesn't. It's called John Crichton Fanfic site. There's a lot of stuff there.

I've been enjoying Reefrunner's series - Honeymoon & it's sequels. I'm on the variations one now, I've read Honeymoon & the Last Resort. I see Reefrunner posted a new addition to the series, which I'll start when I'm done Variations. So, far she's written a great future fic - resolution to 4.22. It is more a novel - not short reads. She's made some interesting twists, that I'm really enjoying.

Another future fic I liked, was The Long Goodbye written by Neuroscpr. As she puts it, it's more of a season 5 than a resolution to BT. It's rated R.

The post(hopefully) is http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/6/thelong.html

Another one I just read is Just One Look by CrystalMoon. It's rated G & is set before John takes out Scorpy's command carrier. It has a lot of angst between John & Aeryn.

http://www.jedikatie.com/action_onelook.html

I hope these links work & even more so, I hope others enjoy these fics. I am by no means a credible reviewer. I've just enjoyed these works. Of course, other authors that I've enjoyed are Aeryncrichton, Cathy 1967, KernilCrash, Shipscat, Red, Officersun547 (I think), Ixchup, Kazbaby - gee , I could go on & on & on - there's an awful lot of very talented writers & I know I've missed a few of favorites in what I listed here. (Sorry about that :( ) I might have gotten a couple of the nicks wrong - have mercy!!

A handful of recs today that run the gamut from humorous to horrifying. A little something for everyone. :D

First, from the oh-so-talented Thea, 'Time Step,' which begins at the tag for A Prefect Murder. Rated PG, lovely and angsty while ending on a note of Farscapean optimism. ;)

http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=14476

Next, the cleverly funny 'Level-Riser Fever' by Kixxa. Rated G and guaranteed to make you chuckle... I'd best throw in a spew-warning, just to be safe. :ewink:

http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=14369

Now for the angst. If you have somehow missed Red's enormous work-in-progress, 'UFO,' then do you have many hours of can't-look-away reading ahead of you!

It's an R-rated AU take on what happens when the crew of Moya bring John home to Earth. It's Terra Firma on steroids. Best of all, it's got Red's undivided attention and new chapters have just been posted.

You can find it right here at FMD. http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1382

But oh, have I saved the best for last. This fic will leave a mark on your psyche. You will feel the sheer impotent fury of helplessness, the hopeless despair of an untenable situation. Things will go south, and then they will go SOUTH---some Very Bad Things will happen.

Someone described this trilogy to me, when I was first reading it, as a masterpiece of slowly creeping horror. It is rated R for very good reason. This dark and brilliant work by Kernezelda will not be everyone's cup of tea.

NOTE: This is very dark fiction with disturbing and graphic situations. If you go ahead, consider yourself warned.

It's best to read the trilogy in order, so:

Stepford Life and Stepford Lies: http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/4/stepfordlies.html

Stepford Leman (the new installment): http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/7/stepford2.html

Maybe you're just looking around for something to throw at me

I took a quick peek at the first few paragraphs. IMO, Aeryn wouldn't do that. She has come too far over the past seasons. Maybe if this happened while she was still wavering between her past life as a PK and her current life on Moya, it might be real to me. What shared with T-John would prevent her from doing that. Maybe I'm prejudging this story because I didn't read through it, but to do that spits on her relationship with T-John or M-John. Doesn't really matter who, it just does. JMHO.

Holy frelling cow, Batman! :eek3:

I'm sitting here barefooted, having just read a startling and gripping fic by EllieJane that put a whole new spin on the Farscape universe. WOW. Knocked my socks off, it did.
:signbravo

Imagine if Aeryn was the astronaut sucked through the wormhole, and Crichton the consummate PK command carrier captain whose brother she accidentally kills. Truly, you can't imagine what twisting paths, what eerie echoes of season 1 EllieJane has cooked up, unless you go and read 'Equal and Opposite' (http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=15000) which is rated PG-13 (violence and mature themes).

You don't have to have read the preceding installments to be immediately hooked by this fic, but if you're the orderly sort you can begin here. (http://mysite.freeserve.com/elliejane/listings.htm)

Or you can dig into the meatier bits that lead up to Equal and Opposite, with 'Nothing, Less' (http://mysite.freeserve.com/elliejane/nothingless.htm) followed by 'A Friend Indeed' (http://mysite.freeserve.com/elliejane/indeed.htm) and then 'Friend or Foe.' (http://mysite.freeserve.com/elliejane/friendor.htm)

You won't regret it, although you may have a hard time waiting for the next fic in the series! :book:

Hm...

I hate filtering through all the fanfics. I wish there were a generally categorised listing of the better ones (episodic / alternate universe / original characters) but that's unlikely unless I do it.

So my question is...

Can someone give me a short (2000-5000) story that'd fit into the series?

Episodic, with all the characters true to the show
or a
Fill-in-the-Show-Mystery (How did Scorpius and Natira know each other? and that kinda thing)

Got any?

Ditto StarsGoBlue....

Leviathan is a very well organized site, easy to use. You can find stories according to specific categories, by titles or authors, you can even search for stories according to their ratings (PG, NC-17 etc.) And the descriptions give a brief summary and tell you who the characters are.

Oh, Stars - really enjoyed "Equal & Opposite" - actually ended up reading the whole 9 yards - it was great.

For a very long read & very angsty, I enjoyed "Season of Death" by Owlman. It's at Kansas, but it was easier to print out at Leviathan. If you are a true blue J/A shipper & don't like if anything comes between them - then this isn't the story for you - but I found its story line to be quite plausible - it's AU after the 2nd season. He's really not done it, yet - he's going onto a 2nd book. IT's a very different look. I hope you enjoy it.

That should hold you for now... and boy, is there some fabulous fic coming down the line, WIPs that are in beta and hopefully will be posted soon. Expect great reads from Cofax, Thea, Searose, and Kixxa, among others. ;)

Hey, your "Left Behind" series is great!! That's another must read - I just can't wait until it's done & not a WIP - on the other hand - I'm always sad when I get to the last chapter of a story - I know the adventure is about to end & I don't want it over - Does that make any sense to anyone?

I highly recomend "Harbinger of Sorrow" by Kazbaby. You can find it at alot of places, and it is the ultimate dark Crichton fic.

My personal favorite of all time is Crichton Vs. Predator. I foget who the author is, but it does justice to both shows!

Oh, and thanks for recomending SoD UTChick!

Crichton vs Predator was written by Spacelord. Don't think he's still around, or at least not writing. He also wrote 'Dark Knight, Rising Sun', a Farscape-Batman crossover.

HAve any of you read Harrigan's Heroes yet? I know it's not finished yet, but I'd be interested to know what you all think of it - especially as it's my first public work. Follow the link in my sig to find it.

:bounce: Oh, what a way to celebrate the return of FMD!

Do you lucky, lucky fic readers have a TREAT waiting for you!!! The ever-so-talented Thea, she of most gorgeous prose and emotional-walloper of the highest order, posted her fabulous, wonderful, superb, fantastic, extraordinary epic, Blue Eyes (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/7/blueeyes.html).

This AU look at the Farscape universe features action, adventure, romance, heartache, tough decisions to be made and consequences for every choice. You'll fret. You'll laugh. You'll mutter insults at your monitor. You won't want the end to come.

Best of all: it's LONG. Long long long long. Meaty and juicy and oh, so. good. It will keep you happy for hours, days, weeks.

In Thea's own words:

What if John Crichton married the princess and stayed on the planet. And what if other circumstances intervened?

The link in the paragraph above will take you to Leviathan (http://www.shriftweb.org/leviathan/), where you can read the complete story in one fell swoop.

:aok: Definitely, *definitely* check out Cofax's recs page (http://mouldiwarps.shriftweb.org/recs.html). So many good stories just a mouse click away!

And a few more, 'cause they make me happy:
I continue my Thea lovefest with Like Shooting Fish in a Barrel (http://www.livejournal.com/community/farscapefriday/189247.html#cutid1), a fun, high-energy action/adventure fic that is absolutely spot-on, and the wickedly funny Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts (http://www.livejournal.com/community/farscapefriday/184393.html#cutid1). Thea's channeling all of Moya's crew in that one, I kid you not.

Recently, Voleuse kindly hosted a Farscape ficathon (http://www.livejournal.com/users/voleuse/353302.html?nc=22) at her LiveJournal. There are over two dozen stories that run the gamut of angst, smut, comedy, character study, and action/adventure... a little bit of something for everyone. Happily, several excellent fics feature characters that often don't get a lot of attention...Sikozu, Talyn, and John's neural clone, among them.

That should hold you for a while. Enjoy! :book:

Well. I am a bad, baaaaad Stars. I have shamefully neglected this thread for far too shockingly long. Will rectify that with LOTS of recs this week.

But now, with perfect timing, and especially for those of you seriously jonesing for the mini... Searose has posted her faaaabulous A Rumpus, A Ruckus, and Sancho Panza to the Rescue (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/8/arumpus.html). This fic picks up the microt following BT, with reconsitution, a plethora of Plans, PKs and Scarrans and Qujagans, oh my!

It's a wonderful ensemble piece, with nail-biting action and one hezmana of an ending. You probably want to lock up the knives when you read it. :elol:

Today I bring you something a little bit different. :elol:

In honor of Farscape's penchant for the unconventional, one of the top writers in fandom has embraced the wacky of OOTM to produce one mind-boggling AU smutfic. :sweaty:

I warn you upfront that it is the smuttiest of smutfic, because 1) definitely NOT safe to click while at work, and 2) don't want any wailing and gnashing of teeth from those with more delicate sensibilities. So if exploration of sexuality isn't your thing... skip it. :dunno:

:lech: For the rest of you... without further ado, Scientist, Astronaut, and Nymphomaniac: The Nine Lives of John Crichton (http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?topic=16641.0).

Hey, Stars, has this been expanded from what was originally posted over on Kansas? If so, I haven't read it all; if not, then I've already read it and heartily second your recommendation. But, um, I think NC17 is maybe an understatement... :O

StarsGoBlue
08-03-2004, 02:45 PM
That's the only posted version, SB, far as I know. Heh. ;)

WIPs
I know some people prefer to not read WIP fics, because the wait between installments can be excruciating. :D But these two, well... I can't NOT rec them.

For Farscape fic as close to canon as it can get--many of us consider it the canon of season 5, as it should be--with the same heartwrenching beauty, side-splitting humor, and dead-to-rights characterization, Feldman's Little Acorns (http://www.wideopenwest.com/~lshirk0824/acorns.htm) will leave you in awe. You'll need popcorn, chocolate, and a box of Kleenex.

Equally impressive is OneEyetheDRD's massive AU epic, Unrealized Peacekeeper (http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?board=35;action=display;threadid=496). It's Farscape fandom's answer to StarWars, and OneEye's attention to detail makes this series a highly satisfying read.

Comedy
WhiteLight, known and feared for her reputation as a master of angstfic, shows us that she can make us giggle, too. There's Nothing Tae-Bo Can't Solve (http://www.livejournal.com/community/sprog_wars/8807.html) comes with a spew warning.

GooBoo's light and playful Photo Op (http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?topic=17743.0) provides us a moment of mischievous madness featuring John, Aeryn, and a thoroughly confused Pilot.

And Kixxa has created a masterpiece of bawdy parody, The Pit, the Pooch, and the Hootch (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/8/thepit.html). Only Kixxa can make me actually feel sorry for Peacekeepers and Grudeks in the same fic. :P

Drama/Character Study/Angst
Red's About a Boat (http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?topic=13570.0) is a snapshot moment of John and D'Argo on Earth. This smart buddyfic is a cut above the rest simply because of the uncanny way Red channels their voices.

Something's not quite right aboard Moya in Strav's (J Stravinski) fic reminiscent of TGAS, DRD's Day Off (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/8/drdsday.html).

Kerlin's latest work, Dreams Deferred (http://kerlin.midnight-graffiti.com/fanfic/feathers.htm), finds John and Aeryn stranded on an unfamiliar commerce planet with Marauder crews closing in. Kerlin has a marvelous way with world-building in this fic, and the plot sinks its hooks from the initial setup and doesn't let go until the payoff.

Feldman's Cut Some Slack (http://www.wideopenwest.com/~lshirk0824/cut.htm) is equally fascinating and unsettling, and piqued my interest in Farscape fandom's participation in Remix Redux stories (http://remix.illuminatedtext.com/dbsearch.php?search=fandom&var=7&var2=Farscape), where authors retell their own version of another's Farscape fic. These fics are definitely unique in the universe. ;)

AstroGirl's Five Things that Never Happened to Pilot (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/8/fivethings.html) gives us an insightful look into all-too-neglected member of Moya's crew.

HossGal does the same with "Five stories of someone who was not Dominar Rygel XVI," titled King of Infinite Space (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/7/kingof.html).

Shaye fleshes out the cryptic character of Noranti in her Farscape Ficathon piece, By Hook or By Crook (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/7/byhook.html).

Films About Ghosts (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/7/filmsabout.html) is a nail-bitingly tense showdown between Crichton and Scorpius, written by Flora.

KodiakkeMax's Gods and Monsters (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/7/godsand.html) also has as its focus the Crichton-Scorpius relationship, in a post-apocalyptic wormhole-riddled timeline. It's dark, but it's KodiakkeMax and therefore a no-brainer rec.

Until next time, when I hope to bring you Thea's Farscape/Firefly crossover, and a jaw-dropping samurai!Aeryn (yes, you read that right) fic by Crankygrrl, amongst other things... happy reading! :book:

UTChick
08-03-2004, 08:24 PM
Wow - definetly some I haven't read listed here!! Great! Can't wait!! THANKS!!

Feldman's Scientist.. story is just AWESOME!! IT's a keeper!! We just need to get her to write another piece from Aeryn's POV!!!

StarsGoBlue
08-04-2004, 11:32 PM
:D Ahhh... at long last, I can link to the most shattering and unique fic I've read in quite some time. Crankygrrl pays homage to the samurai code of bushido in her nod to Japanese manga, Mother Wolf, vol. 1: Devil's Bargain (http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?topic=18859). It's a complete work in its own right, but I'm hoping that vol. 1 portends more to come, if only for Aeryn's sake. ;)

This fic is dark-themed and graphic. The author takes care to tell you so; read at your own risk. And then read it again, to marvel at the sparse elegance of prose, the technical elements used for maximum impact, and the deft characterization of AU characters that ring true despite the radically different story setting.

StarsGoBlue
08-05-2004, 12:01 AM
And because I cannot believe I didn't rec these before... ... dunno what I was thinking, because dude. These two stories kick ass, if for completely different reasons. :D

Cofax's absolutely fabulous Farscape/Casablanca crossover Bellum Interruptum (http://mouldiwarps.shriftweb.org/stories/Bellum.html) gives a reader everything one could possibly want in a John/Aeryn centered fic, even knowing ahead of time that there won't be a happy ending. There is, however, Rygel as you've never seen him before, and love and loss and stolen moments and unexpected, satisfying plot twists.

And on the other end of the 'ship spectrum, the wickedly funny Abbott and Costello Meet the Rainbow Coalition (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/6/abbottand.html) puts a whole new spin on the time John and D'Argo spent on LoMo in season 3's Scratch n' Sniff. Don't click if slash squicks you out (though I reckon Shrift's way with words will win over many a reluctant reader).

StarsGoBlue
08-11-2004, 12:08 AM
I don't usually go looking for crossover fic, but when it's done well... :thud:

Multiverse 2004: The Many Worlds Space Show Crossover Ficathon (http://www.suberic.net/multiverse/index1.htm), hosted by Sabine and Andraste, showcases nearly two dozen fics by some of the best authors writing today, playing in almost as many fandoms. If you're a space-show junkie, you're gonna be in heaven.

:bounce:

I haven't seen an entire episode of Firefly yet, but after certain people [looks pointedly at the camels] dragged me to the panel at Comic Con, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that my favorite Multiverse fics are Firefly/Farscape crossovers.

Do read the complete menu yourself, and indulge your own personal tastes... but if you're looking for suggestions, I'll say this much: Crosses and Naughts (http://www.suberic.net/multiverse/crossesandnaughts.html) made me ache--it's beyond fantastic; Pain Never Stopped Us (http://www.suberic.net/multiverse/painneverstoppedus.html) gave me a whole new appreciation for D'Argo; and The Walls of the Sky (http://www.suberic.net/multiverse/wallsofthesky.html) is, quite simply, an amazingly beautiful and unique fic, in the tradition of the best fairy tales.

I also don't watch Stargate, but that didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the very well-written Looking Glass House (http://www.suberic.net/multiverse/lookingglasshouse.html). And I couldn't stop laughing at the brilliant comedic genius of Res-Q (http://www.suberic.net/multiverse/resq.html), a ST:TNG crossover that plays the pop culture mania of John Crichton against the whimsical fancies of Q. Oh yeah, baby. It rocks.

So, why not try something a little different? I think you'll be very glad you did. ;)

(At this time, each fic's author hasn't been revealed.)

Some people's genius brains, I swear... :woohoo:

I post this not because Kerne is my squishy, but because it is frelling brilliant: poignant and well-crafted and beautifully lyrical, fraught with tension and impending doom and the steadfast devotion of one man who will not be denied.

Well, since I am Kerne-less this weekend, with herself and our third half, Flora, down Dragon*Con way having far too much fun... and since I am the Farscape fic reccer at crack_van (http://www.livejournal.com/community/crack_van/) over on LiveJournal this month, I've been wallowing in some of the best fic our fandom has to offer.

It's always interesting to see how different writers approach the character of Harvey and his motivations, and the uneasy relationship between the neural clone and John. Harvey is every bit the mirror image of Scorpius, in that we the audience never know whether or not he is to be trusted, and how far.

Huzzlewhat has followed a different path in her characterization of a complex John/Harvey/Aeryn dynamic in which there is no simple remedy or solution, and I found it by turns to be poignant and unsettling.

Forced Perspective by Huzzlewhat, PG-13 (http://shriftweb.org/leviathan/archive/1/forcedperspective.html)

A gratifying trend among the Farscape fic writers on LiveJournal is the celebration of under-used characters with ficathons featuring dozens of the fandom's best. The recent Starkathon (http://www.livejournal.com/users/astrogirl2/152615.html), hosted by AstroGirl, is no exception.
