View Full Version : Coke or Pepsi

What with all the seriousness of the opinion threads lately, I thought I'd interject with some good old-fashioned American trivialities... and I'm trying to get 1000 posts by the end of the day.

Of course, the correct answer is Coke. :aok:

I used to like Coke, but then got a taste for Pepsi and have been drinking it ever since.

Although I do like Cherry Coke still.

But, the correct answer is really Pepsi. :)

Being that I used to work for Pepsi... and my father has been working for the same company since I was 3 years old... I would have to say it has to be PEPSI.

I bleed Pepsi blue.

*edit*... I love the way the poll colors are correct. Red for Coke and Blue for Pepsi.

Coke but it has to be caffeine free diet (most of the time) the regular is just too sweet. Also like the diet Vanilla Coke. Pepsi tastes like disinfectant.

I drink Pepsi except:

Rum and Coke
Cherry Coke

For some reason, Pepsi does not taste right with rum or cherry.

That's purely coincidental (and cool). This is interesting... with 12 votes in it's a dead heat. Around here, nobody drinks Pepsi... I think that's the way it is in much of the south. Britney Spears, who is from the Louisiana side of the Louisiana/Mississippi border got "let go" from Pepsi because she wouldn't stop drinking Diet Coke. :whoops:

I'm shocked, too, but the sample size is currently very small (17). That has to be the reason. Coke rules. [My grandmother always pronounced Coke as "co-CO-ler". It's a southern thing.]

But speaking of southern things..... anyone ever drink "RC Cola"? I find it inferior to Coke, but in some parts of the country (some backwoods locales, I think) it is the king of soft drinks.

LiLOrion

O.K., I am NO southerner.

I LIKE to think of myself as a hybrid of the best of a Midwesterner and a Northeasterner. I've actually decided between competing jobs based on their positions relative to the Mason-Dixon lline.

But I've been a Coca-Cola man all my life. Pepsi makes me dyspeptic. Furthermore, most people can't tell you which cola is which when blindfolded... I can discern Coke, Pepsi, RC, and even store brand colas with ease when blindfolded. I can even discern Coke and Pepsi from the nose alone.

RC isn't bad.

Coke isn't what it was... remember the whole New Coke Debacle (Paging Bonnie Yammer -- there's a lesson for ya, gal)?

Well, when Coke went away for a while, it was still sweetened with SUGAR. When it came back it was sweetened with Corn Syrup! They are NOT the same. I can tell the difference, and we don't need any more of that damned FRUCTOSE in our diets anyway. GIVE ME BACK MY SUGAR AND STOP FRELLING WITH MY LIVER!

O.K. so here's a cross post with my thoughts of FRUCTOSE!

http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/newreply.php?s=&action=newreply&postid=251938
Fructose is evil. We should dump all our corn sweetener and go back to sugar. I put you on a fructose IV and it will kill your liver pretty quick. Fructose does some funky stuff to the brain and satiety too... This has been known for AN AGE, and yet, does it make the front page of the newspaper? NAY!

Of course, that might have something to do with the continued existence of sugar tariffs and the lobbying efforts of the Archer Daniels Midland Company. ADM - superlobbyists to the world.

AAAAAUGH! :beergood:

But on the upside, anybody ever try Birch Beer?

Wible and Polar both make a pretty good white birch beer.

Wilbe also makes a red birch beer.

What about REAL root beer? The kind that if you leave it in the can or bottle too long it will explode because of LIVE YEAST! Anybody remember A&P Rootbeer? You could tell when it was old because there would be broken bottles all over the place?

DentArthurDent
10-23-2003, 07:50 AM
I guess the Corn Lobbyists are more powerfull than the sugar lobbyists... Not that theres a law or anything, but favorable tax breaks, etc, etc... it piles up... I suppose I could stop drinking pop...don't get us started on what to call soft drinks...

it's amusing that it's such a polarizing question. I actually drink A LOT of coke because very few returaunts have pepsi. Truthfully I don't like Coke out of a can or bottle, but as a fountain drink, I find coke and pepsi much more difficult to tell apart, and don't care because there isn't a choice anyway...

Yeah I noticed that too. Sometimes I swear I'm drinking RC cola at restaurants...cause they dont know how to fix the syrup/seltzer calibration on their soda machines, or maybe cause they are really serving RC cola instead of Coke or Pepsi (which like you said is usually Coke).

I usually end up ordering water if I'm out. But what the hell is with the lemony water? Are they trying to hide that it comes from the tap?

If I happen to be in an alternate universe where Mt. Dew is not the reigning soft drink, I drink Pepsi. There was a time when I was a Coke fan, but when I worked at my uncle's welding shop, it was across from the Pepsi plant. We did some work for them in an emergency and saved them thousands of dollars, so they gave us free pop anytime we wanted. I ended up drinking my body weight in Pepsi everyday, and now I don't like Coke.

I am always whining about how many restaurants only serve Coke products. But a friend & I went to Omaha last weekend, and she is an avid Coke drinker. Every gas station we stopped at only sold Pepsi products! It was great revenge! :D

Coke is prevalent down here. In fact, nobody calls soda "pop," or "soda" or whatever... no matter what it is it's called "coke".

I do agree about the corn syrup and remember Coke never quite being the same after the debacle of New Coke (which strangely enough tasted like Pepsi).

I foolishly didn't think it mattered all that much, and BOY WAS I WRONG!!! I can't wait to move back down to Georgia, but it will probably be another year before I've saved enough to do it.

There are some things about New England that are nice, but on the whole I don't feel like I belong here. For one thing, its just too damn cold half the year. It snowed today, for example. It's not even Halloween! The clocks haven't been changed. The hell? That is just wrong.

There are a lot of subtle or not-so-subtle cultural differences between where I am from and where I live now. Stuff like what Stellar mentioned (I also call all soft drinks "coke"), but also stuff like how you have to order iced tea in order to get iced tea delivered (just saying "tea" doesn't work, as it usually results in your getting served hot tea, and asking for "sweet tea" results in confusion much of the time), and people look at you funny if you order iced tea in the winter (more prevalent 10 years ago, not so much now), and what you call the water fountain (it's a "bubbler" around here), and what sports are emphasized in the newspapers, and what kind of foods are common, and of course the way you pronounce "car". ;) The colder climate makes a lot of things different. I never had to drive in snow before I moved here. If it snows in Atlanta, you just stay home - no problem. I get really, really, REALLY tired of being cold.

I've managed to wander far off topic. Mostly I miss my family (and my fiance!) and having mild weather and short winters and being able to do things outside most of the time. And COKE! Gotta love Coke. And in Atlanta, I'd be able to go to the coke museum any time I want. See, brought it back around!

Congrats Stellar on your 1000th post!!!

I'm a pepsi girl. I love diet pepsi and caffeine free diet pepsi, but I usually only drink about 1 a week if that.

I can't stand coke. Regular coke has too much sugar or something, it makes my teeth all gritty. Diet coke has something in it that works like a diaretic for me. If I drink a diet coke, I'm sure to be on the toilet urinating for hours afterwards. It's not fun. In other words, I avoid diet coke at all costs. I have no idea if caffeine free diet coke would do the same thing, but I'm not about to try it to find out.

COKE! It has to be coke. Pepsi is gross. It tastes too sweet.

And I only drink real coke. No diet...it's gross. No vanilla or cherry...again...too sweet. And only from a can. Otherwise it ruins the taste.

One beverage pet peeve of mine is that it's getting so hard to order non-sweetened ice tea. Personally, I think iced tea is perfect the way it is, and I think anyone who adds anything to it...just doesn't get tea.

But this is turning into a post for the High Horse Board.

Uh...coke.

I never sweeten iced-tea, or put lemon in it, or drink it with a straw. I drink too fast and sugar slows me down, and that other stuff would probably injure me.

Coke but it has to be caffeine free diet (most of the time) the regular is just too sweet.
While I respect your opinion Selena, I just don't see the point of caffeine-free diet soda. It makes no sense to this former JOLT COLA addict. I loved their advertisements.......ALL THE SUGAR AND TWICE THE CAFFEINE. Yeehaw! Now that's what I call a soft drink!! I used to dring a couple of Jolts a day when I was in college (a million years ago). Kept me wired all day long! I had to give it up though when I developed an ulcer.

But if it came to a decision between Coke and Pepsi I would have to go with Coke. On the rare occasion when I do drink soda it is usually Coke. I find Pepsi too sweet. Although sometimes during the summer I enjoy a Grape soda becuase it reminds me of my childhood.

I'm in college, and I used to take Vivarin to keep me awake. I stopped when my hands started shaking in class one day and I couldn't make them stop. I had to hide them under my desk...I was afraid my professor would think I was a drug addict. Has anyone else ever had that effect from Vivarin?

okay... one of the main differences between Coke and Pepsi is the amount of Carbonation that is in each drink. Coke has more carbonation which gives it that bite while Pepsi doesn't use as much which gives it a sweeter taste. If you were to over-carbonate a Pepsi... it will taste very similar to a Coke.

You like snow, eh? Didja get any last night? Snow, I mean. :ewink:

I had about three inches of wet, yet oddly fluffy snow on my car this morning (and yard, trees and back steps). It was a very pretty ride into work. It looked strange with snow-coated trees in full brilliant fall color. Different.... Didn't take long to melt away, even as it kept coming down throughout the morning.

Coke only bottles glass for 'special occasions' They still bottle the 8oz bottles for Christmas with the classic pictures on them. I don't think any company bottles returnable glass bottles anymore. It wasn't cost effective. Heck... the non-returnable bottles were glass when I worked for Pepsi. They didn't go totally plastic for everything until 1995 or 1996. PET is cheaper than glass... you just melt it down and re-use it.

Hey, stendsteve, I can get the stuff at the local warehouse club by the case... but only in the 8 oz bottles. Last I got 16 oz bottles was back in 1990.

Coke from glass is eminently superior. First, it can take more CO2, i.e., more fizz.

Second, it tastes different from cans and plastic. I can actually recognize the plastic notes from the 2-liter bottles. Not entirely sure if I can pick out the notes from cans, but I CAN discern the two. It only makes sense.... you cannot have a product with that much phosphoric acid in it and NOT get some of the metal ions in the drink.

BTW - Women worried about osteoporosis should avoid colas. The phosphoric acid is very bad news for bone calcium density.

That's a myth. I saw the experiment on Myth Busters. The penny thing sort of works. Coke won't dissolve a steak, degrease an engine, clean clothes. It will polish chrome (with Aluminum foil) better than store-bought chrome polisher. It also cleans blood off of streets slightly better than using nothing.

Coke does contain a very small amount of phosphoric acid and citric acid, as do other soft drinks. Not enough to hurt you, or to dissolve teeth/flesh/nails/etc.. It isn't even close to the level of acidity of normal stomach acid. A glass of orange juice has more acid in it than a coke.

stellar

In order to be serial killed you would have to be killed more than once. People who are killed by a serial killer are just "killed". And serial killers hardly ever clean up after themselves.

I guess I call it "serial killed" because to me the idea of being murdered by a serial killer is far more terrifying than the idea of by murdered when it's just a one time deal. Cause serial killers are the scary thing that scares me the most.

Really? They rarely clean up? Is this a profiling thing?

stellar
10-29-2003, 11:27 AM
Profiling isn't an exact science... Actually it's about as general as you can get. I wonder if the FBI uses palm readers too.

I would say that it's a safe bet that if you kill for fun, you're not worried about getting caught and therefore have no reason to clean up after yourself, e.g. removing your DNA from the crime scene. That's not profiling, that's common sense.

Profilers just use statistical data to predict specific outcomes in a chaotic environment, which is invalid. Budha will probably hose me on this though.

Actually, most serial killers are very methodical.

And criminal profiling isn't an exact scienece, but it does work to some extent. I guess what's important is to not rely on any one method, but to understand a variety of different methods in your field. Profiling and forensic science often seem to be quite useful together.

I'm SO interested in both criminal profiling and foresnsic science, and I'm always watching the science channel specials on them. Which, given my phobia, is not very smart, and leads to a lot of bad dreams.

I've changed to diet coke these days for caloric reasons, and because I am getting old I've had to change to caffiene free diet coke at night (during the work week only, not on the weekends - hmmmm). Now regular coke tastes too sweet as well.

My SO used to practically live on regular coke in college. He'd drink it all day and only eat dinner. He has also switched over to diet, and while he doesn't drink as much as he used to, we should still own stock in the company.

Don't drink Dr. Pepper. I think it does have prune juice in it. My little brother would drink a can of it and then have the runs. Worked every time and no other pop did that to him.

Definitely coke. To me, Pepsi tastes like flat coke. :yuck: Of course, given a choice, I always do a Dew. In desperate times, I have drank them in the can at room temperature - not too bad actually.

As for peanuts in cokes, they're best in root beer.

As for root beer, the best is IBC - and they're still in bottles. Yay!

I live in the heart of Dixie, and this is a typical conversation in the drive-thru:

Give me a #2 combo.

What kind of coke you want with that?

Uh...Give me a Mountain Dew.

I may have already posted this, but I feel lazy. And I feel a little egotistical so I believe I'll reiterate. >=D

RC Cola trumps the big two. I'm a cola fanatic - love em. Even some store brands*. But RC just knocks em all outta the park.

[* While not cola, I do have to mention that I recently tried Sam's 'Dr Thunder' - it's like a Pibb/Pepper knock off, but examined a little closer, it's not. Where Pibb and Dr Pepper are more of a sassafras derivative flavor, Thunder is more like teaberry. Excellent stuff. Just different enough to earn special mention.]

Let me get this straight. Not only did you bump a thread, which you always complain about, but you also bumped a poll thread which will ultimately mean that this thread will go to the top as new people vote but not necessarily post, which you always complain about.

Bored are we? Next you'll be :ignoreing: the ignore thread ;).

this thread was mentioned in the article that I posted about cola and the increase of diabetes in women... so I just bumped it as someone said that I started the thread. I wanted you to get all the credit for the poll. Just clarifying something.

I will admit to a special weekness for Dr. P, IBC root beer and cream soda, especially in a float.

I think the big difference is Coke has that wonderful fizzly to it. You know the kind that every once in a while causes your eyes to water. Pepsi is just sugar and tame by camparison.

Coke has a bit of acidic bite that I don't notice in Pepsi. Barq's is another good root beer, comes in second to IBC for me.

The 'fizzy' that you like is carbonation. Coke has more carbonation in it than almost any other drink. The 'bite' you feel when you drink it is that.

Of course, the correct answer is Coke. :aok:

Damn right! ;)

Pepsi tastes absolutely foul, for one thing.

Another thing is that one of the ingredients they put in Pepsi is phenylalanine (some kind of diet additive, I think). I think that's what gives Pepsi its weird taste, as Coke doesn't have it. But long-term consumption of that can cause heart arrythmia

Gotta go with coke. I mean come on people they created Santa Claus.:D

Modernized, not created :D

The modern Santa Claus is a composite character, made up from the merging of two quite separate figures. The first of these is Saint Nicholas a bishop of Byzantine Anatolia, modern-day Turkey, famous for generous gifts to the poor. In Europe he is still portrayed as a bearded bishop in canonical robes. The second character is Father Christmas, which remains the British name for Santa Claus. Father Christmas dates back at least as far as the 1600s in Britain, and pictures survive of him from that era, portrayed as a well-nourished bearded man, dressed in a long, green, fur-lined robe. He typified the spirit of good cheer at Christmas, and is reflected in the 'Spirit of Christmas Present' in Charles Dickens' famous story, A Christmas Carol.

When the Dutch still owned the land that later became New York, they brought the Saint Nicholas' eve legend with them to the Americas; however without the red mantle and other symbols. Note that in Dutch, the feast is called 'sinterklaas feest', it celebrates the birthday of sinterklaas during sinterklaasavond ("sinterklaas's evening") December 5th or in Belgium at December 6th.

Sinterklaas was Americanized to Santa Claus, but lost his bishop's apparel, and was at first pictured as a thick bellied Dutch sailor with a pipe in a green winter coat. Santa Claus appeared in various colored costumes, as he gradually became amalgamated with the figure of Father Christmas, but red soon became popular after he appeared wearing such on an 1885 Christmas card. The horse was converted to reindeers and a sleigh. The black peters (which are in fact Moorish slaves) were converted to elves, and in an attempt to move the origin of the festivities away from their pagan background to a more Christian one, the date was moved a few weeks to the celebrated day of the birth of Jesus, Christmas.

Santa's image was further modernized by the Coca-Cola company, who at the turn of the 20th Century featured the character in a variety of advertising campaigns. The final version was designed in 1931 by the Swedish-American artist Haddon Sundblom, who used the Swedish Tomte as a model for Santa. These campaigns helped establish a "uniform" Santa character, whereas prior to this his appearance and costume had varied from artist to artist.

I am still going with my original answer of Coke from when I voted in the poll way back when. I have recently tried a new variation of Coke. It is Coca-Cola C2 and it is the reduced sugar and carb Coke. It's not too bad and it tastes much better than the poison that is known as Diet Coke.
