Yeah, that's right. Pennoch, that imposing Scarran with no cheeks, the one whose untimely death no one seemed to notice except for his war minister lover; she seem slightly peeved about it.
I don't know what it is, it's probably just my desire to have a long living representative of the Scarran race with an interesting character. You've all probably noticed by now that every Scarran whose reared his beautifully ugly head at the crew, did not have long for this universe.
First there was Cargn, one tough looking Mo Fo with a bad goatee, a nice intro to what's meant to be the most powerful race yet and thus far. He was pretty cool to hang with, hear his political views and ambitions, but since he's our first Scarran it's all right to dump him in a vat of acid so we can see just how though he really is.
After Cargie to the end of Season 4, there came a long line of scary Scarrans designed mostly to look evil and give the crew hell. Of that that they did very well, but I was left wondering why they don't combine this with a long life and a complex gray character, the stuff of which the other aliens thrive on.
Then in the midst of this line came Naj Gil the cool. Finally a Scarran who didn't immediately try to kill or use the "good guys", partially because circumstances placed them as allies and also he seemed to be a fairly decent fella. Then Talyn has a hormone surge or something and decides to blow up 600 people plus perhaps the only intriguing Scarran ever born (which makes the incident all the more sad).
So then we're left with Staleek, Jenek, Ahkna and Pennoch.
Staleek you sort of have to respect since he's supreme Scarran dictator and all (though I'm sure he didn't get there through his looks or his fashion sense) but, despite stellar acting, I've never liked the look of the short faced leaders as opposed to their anamatronic grunt soldiers. Jenik was close to an exception but he got a face full of John's la bomba before he could take Ahkna's job. Ahkna herself is a quite satisfying (she has to be with Buller underneath right?) but again with the short human-esc face I found myself more drawn to her lover.
Now to stop this never-ending preamble, I know Pennoch doesn’t have a lot of things going for him (supposed lack of life being a big one) but didn't he look like the stuff of nightmares when we first meet him, when Aeryn uselessly tries to shoot him down and he doesn’t flinch? After that, I soon forgot about him as a one-time part, but then I got a little bit more eager when he came back and we see that he's already got a love interest. Sure it may be harsh "I'll throw you in the torture chamber if you fail me" kind of love, but I'm sure it was deep and true all the same; you have to respect that it's just how Scarrans do things. When he even survived a nuclear explosion I almost felt for certain that this guy might even live to be the "Braca" of the Scarrans. But then what happens? He's sent through a wormhole to conquer a dinky excuse for a race and one of them manages to turn the wormhole against him. How humiliating!
Anyway, I may be the only one, but I'm hoping that he "pulled a scorpy" on us and is still alive and will somehow find his way back to his home (maybe he was just sent to the future by said wormhole). If not, then perhaps there will still be some ramifications for his demise, Ahkna did look pretty pissed and she probably blamed John so maybe she'd go the way of Crais on a vendetta.
I just hope they do make a good character out of a long faced Scarran since they look so totally awesome (sorta like draconians if you've ever read Dragonlance). Maybe they could bring back Scorpius's father, but they've got to act fast or Scorpius will wipe out the lot of em (the Scarran's that is, not the writers).
What about the rest of you? Who was/is your favorite Scarran and why? Do you think I'm totally nuts hear, going on about Pennoch when I could be going on about Aeryn and John's relationship? If you managed to read all my nonsense the least you could do is tell me what you think; that is IF YOU DARE MuHaHaHaHa!:elol:
