When did Lani Tupu start doing the voice of Pilot? I'm thinking second season, but want to be sure.
Thanks guys!

I think he did that from the beginning. No one expected the role of Crais to go beyond a few episodes.

I thought he did it from the first episode too...Pilot's voice certainly never changed.
It always kind of bothered me that Lani Tupu never got billed in the opening credits until Crais became a regular on the show. Pilot is SO a main character.
Oh well...I'm sure they had their reasons.

Yes, he's been the voice of Pilot from the beginning. FYI...he originally auditioned for the role of D’Argo.

Thanks Scapers!!! I think I was confused with Pilot and Rygel. Didn't Rygel's voice guy change to Jonathan Hardy? Or am I just making that up, too? LOL

Rygel's voice changed from somebody to somebody else, but I can't remember who!
I think it was at the end of the first or beginning of the second season though.

I don't think it was Rygel's voice that changed from the one season to the next. It was Rygel's main puppeteers. Johnathan Hardy's been there since Premiere.

Further clarification: Yes, it was members of Rygel's puppeteering who changed. The puppeteers voiced Rygel while the scenes were being filmed. The Rygel voice we (the viewers) hear has always been Jonathan Hardy, who ADRs it after the filming.

Were Lani Tupu and Jonathan Hardy ever around the set while they were orginally filming...to like get the feel of it, or something?
And...what does ADR stand for? I've heard it before, but I've never been able to figure it out.

That's right......
The original Lead Pup was John Eccleston, he was replaced in season 2 by Tim Mieville.

Lani used to voice Pilot on set sometimes in the first season, but I don't think JH ever did Rygel 'live.' ADR stands for Additional Dialogue Recording - I think.....

As for being on the set with their characters, Crais has had one or two conversations with Pilot, or acted side-by-side with him at very few points. However, Rygel's voice actor Jonathan Hardy has had one part as one of Moya's Builders, Kahaynu, without Rygel in the same scenes.

While Lani did voice pilot all seasons, Pilot's voice DID change, as mentioned by Lani in an interview.
The production changed sound contracters between seasons 1 and 2, and he noted that the new folks never did get the exact same sound modulation as the original Pilot's voice.

Hey, Buddha, I noticed that just the other day when I was watching some Season 1 & 2 eps! Pilot's voice definitely does change quite a bit from Season 1 to 2. I thought it was just my marbles settling in my head!

Oh...I don't have a very good ear for stuff like that.
Okay, so if Pilot's voice was "redone" by...sound contracters (I don't know what that is) how much of what we hear is actually Lani?
Does my question make sense?

Oh, yeah, it makes sense.
If you've seen him interviewed where he does both characters, Pilot is clearly ALMOST ALL Lani, and very little electronic.
But, I too thought I was losing my marbles a bit with the change. I KNEW it was the same guy... I can place a voice in an instant. But Pilot of Season 2 on sound more effeminate to me than Pilot of first season.

Yes! Effeminate is exactly right! It was as if they took all the low end out of his voice! You have a way of hitting the nail on the head, Buddha.:aok:

At first Pilot's voice had a slight echo that made it sound weirder, later it lost it

Damn...Pilot just rocks.
I've been wanting to make a shirt with his picture on it. It would say "Hero In a Half Shell".

Jonathan Hardy talked about being on the set while there were Rygel scenes at Dragon Con but claimed that he just got in the way and made some rather outrageously funny comments (I wish I could remember them) about things the pupeteers said and he said differently. He did say that he likes to be there to get the feel of the scene but he may not do the VO until some days later.
I don't recall Lani talking about it at DC.

Lani Tupu's actual voice is kind of inbetween Pilot and Crais in tone. At first they processed his voice( I think for only part of season 1). Later he just used a natural voice for Pilot, and he always used a lower register voice for Crais. He even said in interviews that he couldn't do Pilot and Crais on the same day because doing Crais all day messed up his voice for Pilot.
