You know who doesn't get enough props? Rygel. This thread is for his just kickass moments when he's really come through. I don't want to sugarcoat things, because it would definately be a weakness if he was "the slug with the heart of gold", but he's certainly not a one dimensional character. So what are your favorite moments where Rygel really comes through, by being thoughtful of someone else, or really brave when you don't expect him to be, or whatever?

My favorite...spoilers for the Choice

Rygel's speech to Aeryn outside her window. And just that throughout the episode he's supportive and accepting of her grief when no one else is. Anyone who's ever watched someone else grieve knows how hard it is to let them move at their own pace, and not try and hurry them through it, because it hurts so much to watch.

Rygel, in "A Clockwork Nebari", after they shock the devil out of mind-cleansed Aeryn & D'Argo... when Crichton says "Bitchin" and Rygel agrees, in that haughty voice of his "Bitchin".

I love that scene.

I was especially moved by how much he mourned Zhaan. Remember when Chiana caught him in Zhaan's quarters going through her things. At first he tried to make it look like he came to steel Zhaan's stuff but then he broke and admitted that he missed her and had obviously come to connect with his memory of her.

I love the speech he gives in the ep "Into The Lion's Den pt 2" --

"I did see what the Scarrans were able to do. Even if by some wild miracle, I manage to regain my throne, I won't hold it for long if the Peacekeepers have this technology. I know what horrible destruction wormholes can wreak. Nobody should wield such power... nobody."

SIKOZU: You have been reduced in size! You're hardly bigger than a filima bug now!

Sikozu looks around a bit frantically.

SIKOZU: Except... except this can't be happening.

RYGEL: (sighing) Can't it?

SIKOZU: No... no. Reduction by... proportionately subtracting atoms would... leave our brains too simple to function.

RYGEL: So? Maybe they just made all our atoms smaller.

SIKOZU: But then we couldn't breathe normal sized air molecules, don't you see?

Almost nicely recovered from a bit of a panic attack, soothing herself with the 'facts'.

SIKOZU: No. No. This isn't happening because... it is not possible.

RYGEL: Your brain isn't functioning. Do you think this is all just a hallucination? Do you like that explanation better, hm?

SIKOZU: No... but I simply cannot comprehend how --

RYGEL: Neither can I. -- Who cares? We're here, they did it, and that's that. You consider yourself intelligent?

SIKOZU: (angry) Yes, I do.

RYGEL: Then stop behaving like a child.

SIKOZU: I am not a child!

RYGEL: (makes a disbelieving noise) You're an infant! You've studied but you haven't experienced. You know nothing of life.

SIKOZU: (sweetly insincere) And you do?

RYGEL: I've been around long enough to know how ignorant I am. I don't assume the universe obeys my preconceptions. Hah! But I know a frelling fact when it hits me in the face.

Props for the Dominar at last!

I make no secret that he's my favorite character, although in truth, I'm not sure I wouldn't want to space him after a week if he were my houseguest, ya know. There's "favorite character" and there's...

Anyway, most bestest moments. Hum.

Yes, definitely his shouting down of Sikky-poo in ISTIA. (We're Mini Me's now! Deal with it!)

Being all supportive and stuff in The Choice, yep

Any time he's partnered with Stark and/or Chiana and has to be "the adult," so to speak. Well, maybe a lot more so when with Stark.

Zhaan: "...wise Rygel." Damn straight!

Genuine grief at Aeryn's funeral in DMD

Genuine grief about Zhaan, too

Rygel vs Scorpius, head to head battle of wits and negotiating skills! Winner: Rygel!

Rygel the Tour Guide - see my sig! What a diplomat, that Ryg!

Brave moments:
charging Xhalax in... well, whichever the episode. Stupid, too, but still brave

Taking care of Durka once and for all, if ya know whut I mean

Crawling into that Alien Breeding Chamber in Exodus from Genesis. Anyone else besides me expect to see a Giger-ish alien laying eggs in there?

As for who's the most intelligent character, just ask Jonathan Hardy for his unbiased answer.

Rygel has grown a lot.

He has learned to be brave.

He has learned the value of loyalty.

He's not the slug he was when we first met him in the Premeire.

When he surreptiously holds Zhaans hand in Dream a Little Dream.

Another one of my favorite Rygel moments (though not necessarily one where he's being cute and cuddly): when he's alone with the Charrid in IP:DD. I was amazed at how menacing he could be--definitely made me forget he was a puppet.

I think Rygel has become sort of what he used to be before he was deposed. He was imprisioned for a hundred cycles and tortured, but he also had no responsibilities as a prisoner. He has had to relearn to be responsible for his actions.

Mostly, but he has changed too. I don't think anyone gets to change and then go back to the way they were without bringing some insight with him. Like, I think Rygel might be slowly developing views on women that are a little different than his views were when he was a ruler.

4.07 JOHN QUIXOTE
WRITTEN BY - Ben Browder
DIRECTED BY - Tony Tilse
John and Chiana are trapped in a virtual reality simulation, and must win a game controlled by an unstable Stark -- while Moya may be in danger of attack from within.

One of my favorite Rygel Quotes is from episode -

4.01 CRICHTON KICKS
WRITTEN BY - David Kemper
DIRECTED BY - Andrew Prowse
Crichton is reunited with Chiana and Rygel in an attempt to save a dying Leviathan from a group of mercenaries, who storm his new home in an attempt to harvest the living ship's flesh.

"Ahhh Crichton, for once listen... When a woman wether she's your wife, lover, or slave who you have purchased to be your wife or lover, leaves you repeatedly... take a hint." - Rygel

Rygel is my main man, er, slug!!! In my fanfic, I always write him as being wise and (grudgingly) caring. I think that he is his own kind of hero when he has to be. I especially like his relationship with Aeryn. He complains about PKs all the time in the first two seasons, but who's the first person he runs to for protection? Aeryn! :)

Hmmmm.... I think it's time for another Rygel vid.

Spoilers for DMD

It always makes me cry even harder when Rygel gives up his royal medalian for Aeryn. It's such a sweet and unselfish gesture.

Spoilers for Horizons....

Rygel becomes an amazing leader and when he starts to make bad descisions for his people he steps down and dies and allowes a female from his family to be the next dominar. That shows that he has learned a lot out in the Uncharted Territories. :)
