Watching the "least fav. character" thread I thought this would be interesting to know. ;)

Interesting idea, Roland...

With so many opitons you'll need a substantial sample size to tell if there are real differences..

Mayby we can edit it down after a while. Filtering out the not so popular...And then creating a new poll with the top 5(?) favorites.

I think it's pretty obvious where I stand, Crais. It's the whole bad boy and then ambiguous side of his behavior that drew me to him. What can I say? I like tall, dark and mysterious (not to mention handsome and sexy). Surprisingly my hubby is very much like John Cricthon, dirty blond hair, blue eyes, from the South.

Darth Buddha

Crais would be my number two, and I do in fact identify with the "redeemed" Crais more than any other character.

Roland dear, how long have you gone without a cigarette this time? :rollin:

Exactly what does this poll mean? Are you asking if I prefer an American John or Aeryn over a European John and Aeryn? The only John and Aeryn I want to see is Ben Browder and Claudia Black. I don't care where they're from. :)

MJS
11-09-2003, 02:04 PM
Interesting, yes. Problem: I´m Aeryn drooler but I identify with cpt. Crais most. Now which one gets my vote?

p.s. I voted Aeryn anyway, I'm just a guy ;)

Cool idea! I went with Aeryn (A). She's both my favorite character and the one I identify with the most (plus I'm American :D), so it was an easy choice.

Yeah, this is very interesting Roland. I'm definately gonna keep checking up on this to see how things compare after more people vote.

Well, I'm American, and I voted for Aeryn. I can identify with her the most, and I feel that she's gone through so many really interesting changes.

And here I thought you were just after a nomination for the Dren-stirer Frelly Award.

Reminds me, I must appease my favorite Swedish turnip by paying homage to his favorite screamin' redhead, maybe if I prostrate myself I'll be redeemed from all my past misdeeds, then again, I could just be a gift for the altar, can hear the condemnation now, in a very dry droll: contemplate this on the tree of woe, crucify him.

Makes sense. His character is very American, so I guess other Americans may relate to him better.

Good luck Roland.

Me...I quit a few months ago, and haven't screwed up. I think what did it this time was really wanting to do this for myself rather than other people. (My boyfriend, My parents...who didn't know I smoked, but my mom lost her mom to lung cancer, and I didn't want to have to someday tell her that I'd learned nothing from that, and had been smoking ever since I moved out, and that should would have to watch me struggle with the same disease because of that.). But this time...about a week after I quit, my friend was over, and we had gone out onto my balcony so she could smoke. And I was craving one...but I when I looked down at her pack of cigarretes...I got this "No, I don't want this in my life anymore" feeing that I had never had in my previous attempts to quit.

Isn't that the stereotypical almost joke regarding European's perceptions of Americans?

Just as the joke for Americans is that Europeans are insufferably arrogant?

Might provide an interesting explanation if differences continue to develop... Americans tolerate boorish and dislike arrogance, and Europeans vice versa?

Or maybe it's a POV/sympathy thing? Instead of tolerance? Maybe Americans are less like likely to view JC as boorish, while Europeans don't really view Sikozou as arrogant?

On a side note, I've got to start using the word boorish more often.

Although, actually, I just looked at the poll again. It appears that so far JC is the second most popular character amongst people from Europe who have voted in this poll. Granted, it's a small sample, so I don't know if that means anything. But I think it does show that it might be too early to say that JC is not popular in Europe.

Roland
11-10-2003, 03:10 PM

This is most interesting.

I know Americans who are quite quiet people, but JC is certainly one of the loud types, that personally, I endeavour to avoid (I don't just mean Americans... but loud + overconfident people in general)
JC has an 'overpowering' confidence... Sikozu's is a quieter, more internalised confidence. I haven't seen it as arrogance, but then I guess she's more like the sort of people with whom I socialise, so of course, I find that way appealing.

Are Europeans seen as arrogant? I know we Brits are 'traditionally' insular and reserved, but I didn't know we were thought of as arrogant...

I do, however, recognise certain familiar traits in Sikozu, but again, those traits feel pleasantly comfortable:ewink:

Darth Buddha
11-10-2003, 03:28 PM
Those are just stereotypes.

Of the Brits and Aussies I've known, I've loved them. Not reserved... funny as hell though.

Of the Germans and Croats I've worked for, YES they were confident, but they were equal opportunity when it came to claiming/giving credit. I NEVER got as much credit as I did from them

It was just a potential read. I hope I didn't dis' anyone.

It IS a stereotype, but only a stereotype just like it's American counterpart. By only a stereotype, I guess I mean...out of the people I hang out with...can't speak for everyone...I guess we usually feel it's important to be aware of how we as a society DO stereotype people, in order to avoid being sucked into judging people based on what is not...very informed information.

I don't think I make sense right now.

Darth Buddha
11-11-2003, 12:47 PM
Low turnout for Big D... I'll bet that is because he is the NUMBER 2 favorite for a lot of folks.

In truth, Roland, with counts like these, you would have been better off opening it up to vote for as many as you like (with warnings not to "split" votes... i.e. I vote for one as an American, and another as a European, just to Frell with the magnificent Scaper Swede).

But that's Monday Morning Quarterbacking, as we Yanks like to call it. I might have called it differently, but how many polls have I screwed up to figure some of this stuff out?

I've lost count. And I still screw up... my last poll sucked so much I'm going to delete it tomorrow and repost it.

Roland
11-11-2003, 02:54 PM

Darth Buddha
11-12-2003, 12:38 PM
Actually, Roland, you are getting enough counts to discrimminate between the "leads"... in time the "supporting" characters might be teased out. If not, I suggest we given them a separate poll in a week or three.

If you exclude John and Aeryn, I suspect the differences in international votes for the supporting case would be VERY interesting!

But I might just have to run some stats on this this weekend... say a Chi-Square on American vs. European preferences for leads vs. Supporting Characters (I think we have enough counts to make it meaningful). If trends continue, separate analyses for Different Preference for John, for Aeryn, and for Chiana (maybe even Rygel?) could be done.

But I am NOT going to do a Bonferoni correction for multiple comparisons! No conservative tests! Bwahahaha!

I voted for John. I must say though that I liked him better in the first 2 seasons. He didn't start getting too loud and boorish (I like that word too J_S) until mid season 3 and then 4. I hope in future episodes he makes more of an effort to solve problems with his brain instead of his pulse pistol.

As far as sterotypes - don't like 'em don't use 'em.

I took the liberty of crunching the numbers and this is what they say.

17% of Europeans voted for John and 35% of Americans http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/crazy/289.gif
59% of Europeans voted for Aeryn and 29% of Americans http://users.telenet.be/eforum/emoticons4u/love/641.gifhttp://users.telenet.be/eforum/emoticons4u/love/806.gif
9% of Europeans voted for Chiana and 12% of Americans.http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/crazy/1065.gif

Votes for the other cast members are probably too low to draw any conclusions buy worth noting are that .....

1. The only votes for Jool and Sikozu were from Europe
2. 15% of Americans went for Zaahn, Rygel or Stark but only 1 (3%) European (probably of American decent).

So what does this tell us????? God only knows (and Darth Budda).

On the John/Aeryn vote could it be that a higher proportion of scapers in Europe are men? I don't think so but maybe.
On the Zaahn/Rygel/Stark vote could it really be as simple as the fact that the USA is a more diverse culture more easily accepting 'aliens'.
And as to the Jool/Sikozu vote could it be that we Europeans are more used to cold strong women? (Margaret Thatcher/ the Queen/ Catherine Deneuve/ Lilly Savage)?

Darth Buddha

Sorry, forgot to run tests for significance.

Pretty sure there will be significance for John vs. Aeryn, and either of them vs. all other choices. Probably for Chiana vs. all other choices too.

The rest, not very likely. But I'll run it and give the exact p-values next time I'm running SAS.

I voted John - American. I've only seen the first 2 seasons completely though, since I bought the Season 1 & Season 2 boxed sets 3 1/2 weeks ago. I tried to pace myself because I have a compulsive disorder I believe, but unfortunately finished both seasons a week ago, and am now having withdrawals.

If VBKatLou is correct then maybe I'll change my tune with the next 2 seasons. I did see a handful of the final season's episodes (the last 5 or 6) but didn't see the finale thankfully (so I can at least be surprised).

I do like Aeryn's character alot also, but in the first 2 seasons John's gotten to play the character every guy would love to play.

hell most of our cultures (and therefore a large portion of american culture) can be traced to other countrys, when they raped, pillaged and/or invaded us (vikings, normons, romans)Maybe but I don't think being raped by a Viking entitles you to claim that you are culturally diverse!!. Also mixing with a few Danish, French and Italians over the last 1000 years hardly competes with the vast mix of people who have populated America over the last 100 years.
As to Sikozu I am a big fan of hers but you wouldn't say she was exactly the warm friendly come in sit down and have a cup of tea type would you?

For example when hes at the scarren base with the pkbitch, brakka and so on..

he runs in with an Abomb pretending to be al quida or something and answers the question: What do u want chrichton? with the simple all american favorite; CAPITALISM :)
