View Full Version : What are you into?

Hi, everyone! It's my first thread!

I'm still a relative newbie, but I've been around here long enough to have gathered some ideas about the personalities and interests of some of the frequeners of this site.

I was reading the latest posts to the "pees in shower" thread, and Darth Buddha mentioned that he had read "Dune: The Machine Crusade" recently (in the tub, but that's another story).

It got me wondering, what else is everyone here into, specifically movies, tv and books? I think that a lot of us will find that we share a lot of the same interests. I'd like to see if there is a common "'Scaper profile". Also, I'd like to see if there's some things I'm missing out on.

Just to get things started, here's a few of my favorites:

Books: The entire Dune series, including the Brian Herbert and Kevin anderson books; anything by Douglas Adams; Good Omens - Neil Gaimen and Terry Pritchard; Weaveworld - Clive Barker. (I could go on all day in this category, but these I've read over and over.)

TV: FARSCAPE; Twin Peaks; American Gothic; Dr. Who; Space: 1999 (How 'bout that girl with the dotted eyebrows?); Star Trek: TNG and Voyager; Sports Night, MASH and The Dick Van Dyke Show (gotta have a little sci-fi break!)

Movies: Just about anything by David Lynch or Terry Gilliam; The Matrix movies (Though the jury's still out on Revolutions); the Star Wars series, even the new ones; Kevin Smith movies; MASH, The Odd Couple.

I'm sure I'll think of a lot more after I post this thread, but that should kick things off. I purposely left out music and other interests because I don't think they relate as closely to our mutual interest in Farscape, plus I din't want the responses to get too long to read.

One more thing. If a thread just like this is already out there, my apologies. As i said at the beginning, I'm still a newbie! :)

Hi La Bomba :)

In answer to your question, yes, there are other threads about this, but it's been awhile and personally I think it's better to start a new thread then try to search for the old ones.

I'm getting ready to leave work, so maybe I'll have my answers by later this evening.

BTW - just a warning - I never really got into Doctor Who myself, but there are a couple of people here, and I won't mention any names.........er.....cheese....er who are somewhat fanatical (but in a good way). Apparently when discussing the TV show, it's Doctor Who and when discussing the movie it's Dr. Who. At least that's what I've read here once or twice or maybe 50 times. Oh God, I hope I didn't get that backwards. :rollin:

Books: I too love the Dune books, by the father. I only read one by the son and I didn't like it so much. Other books that are my favorite: The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, I loved the Herald Mage books by Merceds Lackey... um... drawing a blank.. Oh wait: The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I read he is editing the last book. (yea!!)

Movies: At the moment I am completely devoted to the Lord of the Rings movies. I preordered the extended version of the Two Towers and I can't wait for it, and for the last movie.
Other then that, I am a sci-fi, action adventure kind of girl. ;)

TV: I won't say, cuz as soon as I do, it gets canceled... *cough cough Boomtown cough* .....sigh......

Yes... A fanatic of Doctor Who here... as many of you probably know. To follow up on KatLou's reply to you... When discussing Doctor Who... the television show is always written out fully... Doctor Who. The really 'cheesy' movies that Terry Nation(creator of the Daleks) released in order to capitalize on Dalek Mania that was occuring in the UK in 1965 and 1966 are Dr. Who. There is a huge difference between them.

OK home now.

Favorite Books: I kind of go through phases. I was cleaning the basement over the weekend and found two more boxes that I forgot I had so now I'm feeling like a kid at Christmas. There's a bunch of Agatha Christie - I find her murder/who-done-its a fast read and relaxing. I also found my copy of Alice In Wonderland which I haven't read in years. Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut - I think I've read most of his stuff.

TV: CSI Las Vegas, Law and Order repeats (I never watched the show the first time around) - and just the real L&O - not those spin-offs. I also like watching those black and white movies from the 30s, but not musicals. Iron Chef. Dead Men's Secrets and Secret Passages (on the History Channel)

Movies: I rarely go to the theater, I just wait for the DVD. I just got 'To Kill A Mockingbird', 'A Nightmare Before Christmas', the second Matrix. Just waiting for a rainy day when there's nothing to do.

BTW - see what I mean about the Doctor Who thing? :rollin:

Am I the only one who thought this sounded like a sex question by the title? Kinks or vanilla?

Anyways . . .

Books: Not reading so much lately. Still, I've really enjoyed Daniel Silva, Harry Potter ( :P it's still a good story), Terry Goodkind (pre-preaching), Simon R. Green, etc....

TV: Tapes and DVDs of cancelled or finished shows (*sniffles* To Be Continued . . .) Angel, Alias, Dead Like Me, Nip/Tuck, and a lot of crap on The History Channel, Discovery, and TLC.

Movies: Ugh, too many to list. Although, lately I've been on an Equilibrium kick. Thanks again to those Scapers who recommended that one!

Books.
Micheal Resnik... huge push for this author. Santiago and the Widowmaker books are really interesting.
Joe Haldeman - His Forever War/Peace/Free books are amazing.
Robert Lynn Asprin - Love the Myth, Phule, and TimeScout books.

TV.
Joan of Arcadia is really good... I am liking it more every week.
Buffy reruns... have to watch that.
Angel - always good.
Doctor Who DVD's... whenever I get enough to buy them I do.
I am waiting impatiently for the Blakes 7 DVD's to be released.
as with the FireFly DVD.

Movies I need to think about.

Right now I like Chipotle (if you don't know, you need to find out), anything spicy, cheese (not american processed death by 9 fake cheese)

The Who is my favorite band.

With grinner on the Blake's 7 DVDs, I've had a few false starts, OCT 01, JUNE 02, SEPT02, DEC02, JAN 03, JUN03, JUL03 and now who the frell knows!!!

Now I'm angry.

I like the NYPD Blue, Third Watch, Threat Matrix (but only a little, it's not realistic, but I like gadgets), Alias, Jake 2.0, Stargate, and almost all science fiction, except Tarzan and Tremors the series.

I really like Titus, but they took that away too, B@st@rds. Scrubs is great, but no Titus.

I'm anry again.

Apparently I enjoy getting angry.

I like DVDs in general, I don't even have to like the movie, if it's under 3 bucks, I'll buy it. I've over 800, so you know there are some crappy flicks in there somewhere.

Attack of the Killer Tomatos

Any Troma

I like other things, but I'll save that for later.

Books: Amy Hempel- At the Gates of the Animal Kingdom
Lorrie Moore-Birds of America and Self Help
Michael Chabon- Wonder Boys and Summer Land
Melanie Rae Thon- Sweethearts
Mark Richard- The Ice at the Bottom of the world.

And every year I buy the "Best American Short Stories" collection and the O'Henry Awards collections.

And I also like to search for used copies of my favorite books from when I was a kid.

TV: Law and Order...the originals, but I'll watch the other ones if nothing else is on...repeats of X files from when it was good (before LA), ER repeats from when it was good, The West Wing, Home Movies. Tapes of News Radio, cause for some reason it's not in syndication anymore, even though it should be. I would watch repeats of Xena if it was on regular cable, but it's not.

Movies- The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon were awesome...we won't discuss Hannibal.
-Lilo and Stich I watch whenever I'm down.
-Heavenly Creatures...gotta give it credit for being the funniest creepy movie I have ever seen.
-Enjoying the Lord of the Rings movies.
I love period movies (no, not THAT)...Angels and Insects, Mrs Brown, awwwww...and the Anne of Green Gables movies that were on PBS when I was a kid.

I'm not reading anything right now but I am into making my own books from scratch! I was even thinking of taking one or two of the stories that people post here and binding them into a nice little book - I can't sell it of course but it's better than making a blank journal.

when I do read I read: Arthur C. Clark and Ian Pears.

The Last of the Mohicans is my favorite

I love that movie!!! I don't really know why but I love that movie!

What I mean is that Superman is ultimately unstoppable as he was originally created. There is no way anyone could compete against him... as he was... A SUPERMAN. Now the X-Men, like all Marvel Superheros have some special powers, but they are fallible. They are not all powerful.
A few years ago DC had a fight between Batman and Superman. Batman won. Very implausible. Come one... Batman has no superpowers... he is just very athletic. 1 hit from Supes would kill him.

When we're talking X-Men, we're talking Uncanny, right? Not the subsequent X-Men title featuring the the younger X's. I imagine it would have to be Uncanny, since I don't believe there's been enough years go by for the latter to have reached 392, but I could be mistaken...

I'd put my total collection at a rough 4,000 total books. The better part of my collection is dominated by the Supes titles, and the various X incarnations.

Blame the leaning toward Supes on my dad. When I was a kid, everything he had us watch/read was geared toward the hero in the "white hat". Funny thing is, Batman is his favorite comic.

I do like the X books, if they have enough of the big name members. Don't even get me started on Marrow and Maggot.

First off, my sincerest apologies to Grinner, Who45, and all the other Doctor Who fans for my little indescretion. I remember those Dr. Who movies (Peter Cushing, right?), and you're right, they should not be associated with the tv series. Thanks for the heads up on that one VBKatLou!
On a side note, what did you guys think of the 1994 or so TV movie?

Anyway, this is exactly what I'd hoped for!! I've seen at least 5 or six things mentioned that I'm going to check out ASAP! Keep the responses coming! I think first up for me will be a re-reading of Alice in Wonderland, which I have not read in years either! Thanks again, VBKatLou!

One book I forgot to mention, and it's in my top 5, is Job: A Comedy of Justice by Robert Heinlein (sp?). If you are looking for a brilliant read, check it out!

NYPinTA, I loved the Dark Tower series, too. I haven't yet picked up the 5th book. How does it compare?

The Eighth Doctor, played by Paul McGann, was in 1996. It was a valiant attempt by Fox to restart the program. The problem was the BBC wanted to much control and they forced some changes to the show. The guy that wrote that episode had never written for Doctor Who before, and was a little free with some ideas. The Doctor being half-human... whatever. The Eye of Harmony located in the TARDIS instead of on Galifrey... sure. The Daleks trying The Master... I think not. There are more continuity problems... but it was a great attempt to Americanize the show.... which I personally think was a huge mistake. If and when Doctor Who returns... I wish it would either be filmed in New Zealand or Australia... rather than the UK or Canada... or heaven forbid... Hollywierd.

But on the whole... The 1996 Fox television movie Doctor Who was... adequate.

TV: Farscape, Alias, JAG, Miss Match, Gilmore Girls, The Guardian, Scrubs, Navy NCIS, Nip/Tuck, Law & Order: SVU or CI, The O.C., Firefly, Karen Sisco, Boomtown...

Grinner,

I am obviously not nearly as well versed in Doctor Who as you, so indulge me for a couple of questions:

I get the references to the Doctor being half-human and the eye of harmony being on Galifrey, but I don't know what you're referring to about the Daleks trying the Master. It's been a while since I saw the Paul McGann tv movie, but I don't recall there being any plotline about the Daleks.

My Doctor Who watching when I was growing up was limited to what I could catch on PBS, which was most of the (forgive me if I mess up the names) John Pertwee years, all of Tom Baker, all of Peter Davidson, and some of Colin Baker. I don't think I've ever seen an entire episode with Sylvester McCoy, and I've only seen one or two of the first 2 doctors.
I have been purchasing DVD's here and there, trying to get a collection together. Mostly, I've been sticking to what I know, purchasing my favorite Tom Baker and Peter Davidson eps. What do I absolutely need to have that I wouldn't think to purchase on my own, given my Doctor Who experience?

grinner
11-12-2003, 10:25 AM
In the very begining of the show... The Master is on trial. The voices of the ones that are running the trial are the Daleks. They are stylized a bit... but it is obvious that it is a Dalek voice when they scream.. 'Exterminate... Exterminate... Exterminate'. The other hint that it is the Daleks is that the trial takes place on Skaros... which is the Dalek homeworld.
The other problem with the trial of the Master... is that all trials of every TimeLord HAS to be on Gallifrey. The TimeLords do not ALLOW any TimeLord to be tried anywhere else. So the Doctor having to bring the Master's remains to Gallifrey is a plot hole.
There are only 16 complete episodes of the William Hartnell era. Of the Patrick Troughton era... there are only 6 complete episodes. All the ones that are missing were DESTROYED by the BBC when it was decided that the Vault needed to be cleaned. There are a number of shows that are missing because of this action.

I would highly recommend you picking up all of the Target Novelizations of the episodes... as they will fill the gaps. One episode that is an important one was recently FINALLY novelized about 5 years ago... The Power of the Daleks. The BBC and Target had to go back to the original script to write it... as everything was missing. This is the very first appearance of Patrick Troughton as the Doctor.

I would suggest you slowly build up your DVD collection by getting the Doctors that you liked and then slowly getting others. However... you SHOULD pick up the Daleks DVD, the CYBERMEN DVD and The William Harnell and Patrick Troughton Years DVD's. These DVD's were initially LIMITED runs and have parts of the episodes that are still in existence. *edit* Also you must buy the Shada DVD. This episode was never completed... but it makes some latter episodes clearer. There are a number of reason WHY Shada was never completed... but the DVD uses the existing scenes and then has Tom Baker narrating the parts that are missing. Very good DVD.

DAMN YOU BBC... DAMN YOU TO HELL.

Thank you, Grinner! It makes so much more sense, now! When I first taped it, I missed the first minute and a half. So I've always assumed that the Timelords had the Master on trial, not the Daleks! And you're absolutely right, it make no sense whatsoever!! It would never have gone down that way!

Also, thanks for the tips on DVD's.

Actually, I can see colors in full sunlight, but not flourescent light.

I've lost count of the number of times I've bought something, gotten it to the parking lot in the sun, and turned around to return it.

Occasionaly I've pissed off a cashier, but my response is usually

Buddha,

I'm sure you'll probably agree that the original Dune books by Frank Herbert were the best, but which of the Brian Herbert series' have you liked better so far?

I love the Butlerian Jihad books so far! I liked the first series, I thought I fleshed out some of the happenings of Frank's books very well, but I thought the stories themselves were a little....ummm... slow, I guess. Perhaps because they had so much they had to adhere to, they didn't have enough room for originality? What did you think?

I'm into: Tricky (Maxinque is mind boggling!), Prince, Peter Gabriel, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Grass Roots (Anyone remember them?), Stan Ridgway, The Talking Heads, Jim Croce, Digital Underground (Got them packets!), and just about any singer or group with a good story to tell.

I have to agree with you. I give Butlerian Jihad enough points to outscore Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, but none of the others.

I actually think ALL of the new books with the exception of House Corrino were better than Dune Messiah.

But what I am waiting for is the conclusion of the original series... Dune 7, following Chapterhouse Dune. I really identify with the Duncan Idaho ghola (all of them, actually). My life often feels like serial lifetimes... and the damned morality that he is afflicted with is not that different from my own.

The 1996 Fox television movie Doctor Who was... adequate.

Yeah, the 1996 movie was Ok. I didn't dislike it either, but I do think also that it was too Americanized. It just seemed to lack something. I had a HUGE problem with the Daleks trying the Master also. That did not follow Doctor Who at all. As you stated, trials for Timelords are always on Gallifrey; it is the Timelords that carry out sentencing of their own. I really didn't like Eric Roberts as The Master, maybe it was because I really liked Anthony Ainley's Master or it could be that I'm not an Eric Roberts fan.

The Tom Baker years and 30 Years and More in the Tardis are two more good ones, unfortunately those are not in DVD but VHS.

Did you know... that Roger's death was one of the reasons that Jon Pertwee stepped down as the Doctor. BBC wanted to go another season or two with him... and after Roger died... Jon stated that he was done... and so the BBC had to scramble and get someone. Which is how someone that many of TPTB at the BBC didn't like... got to be the Doctor... Tom Baker.

Thanks, Who45. I do have the more than 30 years in the Tardis, and that was a big help for "catching up".
Can you guys tell me this? What was the episode where the master and Tom Baker were battling inside the Master's mind? That I remember being fantastic!
Also, are there any Sylvester McCoy eps that are particularly good? I haven't seen any with him (besides the Paul McGann thing).

I didn't know that until a year or so ago. I knew that BBC wanted him to stay on, but he didn't want to. I just didn't know the reason until I read it on of the Doctor Who websites. I remember when I heard about Jon's death...wow. Eventhough he wasn't my favorite, he made a good Doctor. He had that James Bond kind of flair that was great for his time.

Whenever I hear about someone that was affiliated with Doctor Who dying... it makes it all the more pressing to me that the Doctor needs to be restarted. Because once all the people that worked on it are gone... that's it.

When I think of Doctor Who, I have always thought first of Tom Baker. Personally, I don't think Doctor Who would have been as popular or made it as long without Tom Baker, but that's my opinion.

I think for the new Doctor Who to be a success, they should have some that worked on the original. It is wierd when you watch the tapes and DVD's of all the Doctors and you're used to seeing them as they were, then when you see the ones that are still alive, they look older..it's kind of like...wow. But I guess some might feel that way about me in years time, lol.

Yeah, they laid off about 220 people at my company last month. They staggered the telling of people and only told several at a time . They were given a box, a half hour to pack and then were escorted out the door by security. It took most of the day. It was the "security" thing that really disgusted me. It was like "yesterday we considered you an employee, today we consider you a criminal".

And that relief/guilt/relief feeling had me pretty wierded out too.

The good news is that some of them are keeping in touch and it sounds like they have been getting jobs pretty quickly.

Books: Shannarra books by Terry Brooks, most of Raymond E. Feist's books (although his latest seem a little watered down to me), Harry Potter (Prisoner of Azkaban's my favorite), everything by Orson Scott Card, No Exit and Other Plays by Jean Paul Sartre, Dylan Thomas' short stories and poems, poetry by Shelley, Pablo Neruda, Arthur Rimbaud and William Carlos Williams, etc.

TV: Reruns of Farscape, Sliders, ST:DS9, Buffy, Xena, Battlestar Galactica.
Current TV: Becker (not so much since Bob left though), Scrubs, Fraser(sometimes), boy this is a short list!

Movies: Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the first Matrix movie, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, most of Woody Allen's movies, Star Trek movies, Galaxy Quest (hey, I can laugh at myself!), old Danny Kaye movies, like The Jester and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Slingblade, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, and many more if I sat here long enough.

Music: Cracker, Lou Reed, Carbon Leaf, Cowboy Junkies, The Smiths, The Cure, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The White Stripes, Sting, The Pixies, and others.

I think there's a million smilie march scheduled for this weekend in D.C. to fight for equal smilie rights.

um...how do smileys march? do they bounce? could it be a million smiley bounce? that doesn't seem so dignified.

i don't know, but that doesn't seem so dignified either...but sooner or later they'll take over, put a smiley in the white house, which will be renamed the smile house, and the usa will be renamed into the united smiley army and we will have the  as the supreme general dictator.

So that's why Jelly's always sucking up to the bananas! He's got the inside info!
Hey, love those bananas!

As far as books go, I will read anything but preferably Christine Feehan and Lori Foster. :whome:

TV...I really dont watch too much tv but I do channel surf with the best of them. I dont have any particular faves.

Movies is a tough one. I have alot of fave movies. I prefer comedy but will watch other stuff.

I know this sounds vague but I am easy to please and I am not picky.

My hobbies are art, crafts, animals, music, reading.......This list can go on and on :D

Oh don't worry, BC... that's far better than the traditional character description from what I've seen:

"Contradicts themselves. Can be anything at any given time."

Wow, that was a completely random post.
