Stargate Atlantis set for summer 2004
NOVEMBER 13, 2003

A new team of explorers is getting ready to step through the Stargate! GateWorld has confirmed with a reliable source that Stargate Atlantis, the long-planned live-action Stargate spin-off series, has been given a green light to enter production.

The new series will debut this summer on The Sci-Fi Channel, and should thus air concurrently with Stargate SG-1's eighth season. SG-1's season premiere is expected to air in June, though the network has yet to confirm.

What do we know about Atlantis so far? Here's a run-down of the details (check out GateWorld's Atlantis section for even more):

The premise for Atlantis is set up by the 2-part season finale of SG-1, where the team makes an incredible discovery about the lost city of the Ancients.

Actress Jessica Steen, who guest stars in the 2-parter as Dr. Elizabeth Weir, may become a regular on Atlantis -- though not the series' lead.

The show won't be based on a military team.

Characters from SG-1 will very likely make guest appearances (but don't expect any regulars to cross-over and become regulars on the spin-off).

The series will feature a brand new villain, rather than the Goa'uld. (This may or may not be the same species to be introduced in SG-1's eighth season.)

SG-1 and Atlantis co-creator Brad Wright took off the last year from his duties as SG-1's show-runner in order to develop Atlantis and to write the pilot script.

Still unknown or undecided are the new show's cast and characters, and who will write and produce the series, as its first season will be in production concurrent with SG-1.
If Atlantis approximately follows SG-1's production schedule, principal photography should begin in February in order to be ready for a June premiere -- assuming the spin-off will debut in June, alongside SG-1, rather than later in the summer. Casting for the new series should therefore begin soon.

I really think skiffy should change their name to the stargate channel.

Well, good for Jess, in a way. Kahlaan forbid if we have a FEMALE lead for a sci-fi show! At least she's got good work.

- Annie There have been female leads in Science Fiction shows before... Janeway, Buffy, the chick from Dark Angel, Witchblade...

Oh, THANK YOU for imparting your wisdom upon me, oh, all-font of sci-fi knowledge! I was being sarcastic... And yeah, I watched most of those shows. But in all fairness, those shows were developed in the mid to late 90's, when people were trying to push for good roles for women. These days, it seems like we've gone back to the stereotypical "females in support roles or femme fatales" nonsense.

And, since you're imparting your great sci-fi wisdom upon me, I'll remind you of another show with a female lead - Earth 2, which Jessica Steen was a cast member of.

Witchblade left production last year, as did Dark Angel.

You don't have to get bitchy about it... as you probably realize... sarcasmism doesn't translate well to the written form.
