Okay – I have a bit of a dilemma. The gentleman who owns the building where my office is came to me – he has a job for me. He is about to begin construction of a new commercial building – basically a new strip mall – anyway, he hands me the blueprints for the new building and asked if I’d be interested in doing a conceptual drawing of the building for him. To be specific – he want’s a large highly detailed colored drawing of what the building will look like completed – including landscaping. He want’s an estimate of how much and how long it will take me by tonight. Actually, he may want two pieces, but I’m just worried about the one for now.

One point of interest – most conceptual artists anymore use computer aided drafting and programs to do the majority of the work – I work completely freehand. More man hours, basically. He understands that and I think that’s what he’s looking for.

My dilemma – I know how long it will take, but I have no idea what to charge him. I’ve never done anything like this before and I don’t want to come off greedy by overcharging or looking like a shmuck by undercharging. I need serious suggestions – I don’t want to miss this opportunity. Can any Scapers out here help me – PLEEEEEEEASE!!!!!!!

Mmmm, it would help to know more of what your actual job is. You're a conceptual artist, then? Or does he just like you and wants you to draw stuff? If you're already a pro, you have a pricing system, yes? "Gimme something, Gimme something!" as Raxil might say.

Estimate how many hours it would take you to do ... then give yourself at least $25 an hour (that's the low-end of "standard" rates for that sort of thing).

There is also a web site for the American Institue for Graphic Arts (AIGA) - they have pricing for all walks of graphic services you might want to check their site - http://www.aiga.org they may have some info for you. I know that they publish a book every year so it the pricing info may not be on the site.
