I, E.T quickie question

This is sort've random, but it's been bugging me. When D'Argo and Aeryn are first seen in the tree and talking, D'Argo does something weird. He reaches down, grabs something and squeezes it. I thought that was really random - what was it, a snake or animal or just something random without a purpose?

In the commentary, Anth says it was supposed to be a bird, but the idea never got explored.

Apparently because at that point they'd run out of cash for the cgi to do the bird :D. So instead, Anth had to pretend that the bird was behind Claudia's back ...
