Nude man arrested behind grocery
Man caught believed to be 'naked photographer'
By Matthew Engelhaupt (Lantern writer)
The "naked photographer" may have run out of luck, long before he ran out of film.
Stephen P. Linnen, 33, of Columbus, was taken into custody shortly after 11 p.m. on Wednesday. He is being charged with public indecency, assault and gross sexual imposition.
Linnen is believed to be the infamous photographer who would expose himself to women, take their picture and then run.
Linnen, who works on the legal counsel for taxation and education for the Ohio House of Representatives, has been put on a leave of absence from his responsibilities with the state.
Following two incidents earlier in the evening near the Kroger store on Olentangy River and Ackerman roads, Linnen was apprehended in the alley behind the store. The first incident occurred around 8 p.m., when he approached a woman, took her picture and ran away.
"He hit again around 10:30 p.m.," said Sherry Mercurio, spokeswoman for the Columbus Division of Police. "That victim attempted to grab his hat or glasses, and he pushed her and ran. Officers were able to indict him behind a Dumpster."
"He has actually been arrested twice," Mercurio said. "He was arrested Wednesday night and taken down to the jail facility down at Jackson Pike. When he was released yesterday morning, we picked him up and brought him in on a warrant that Gahanna had filed."
The majority of the acts have taken place in northwest Columbus.
Linnen was able to evade police because of the inconsistency of his actions.
"He did not hit on just one block or small area," Mercurio said. "Northwest Columbus encompasses a rather large area, so without having a specific pattern, other than warmer weather, it is very difficult to cover the area. We have had 28 incidents in Columbus since April 17, 2002, that includes the two Wednesday night."
The investigation is on-going, and will take time because of the large number of reports filed against Linnen.
"With 28 victims, it is going to take some time to get through everything," Mercurio said.

I used to shop in that Kroger and I worked in a Joann Fabrics about 3 stores down in the same strip mall. Little did I know that taking the trash out to the dumpster at night could have been very interesting!

I think I remember reading about that last summer. Maybe somebody posted an article here?
Is there something wrong with me for thinking this whole thing is just funny?

No. Or maybe it's just the same thing that's wrong with me.

It is pretty funny - except to the women he exposed himself to. You should have seen the artist sketch they had originally - stocking cap, big sunglasses, huge smile. How descriptive is that?
In all seriousness though, he seemed to be escallating, in some of the later cases he touched the women. As these nut jobs get bolder they often go on to more unpleasant actions to get their jollies.

Well, I definately don't think that's funny, so I guess I'm not a completely bad person.

All sex offenders, even exhibitionists like this, scare me. I've got female fellow grad students who are afraid to walk home after dark because of MEN.
That guilts me as a male no end. I do occassionaly provide "armed escort". .. hey, not a gun... I've got TWO arms! But then, am I patronizing a female by offering her a ride or a walk home? I must state that I am expecting NOTHING... without the most outrageous of encouragement of course.

Buddha,
You are NOT responsible for the actions of other men. As long as you do your best to do the right thing (which it sounds like you do) you do NOT need to feel guilty. Men, in general, are not bad because SOME men are pervs.
Men and women both do some pretty horrible things. All we can do is try and counter those things with...just being good to other people.

And I used to get offended when my boyfriend insisted on walking me places after dark. BUT...he does have years of boxing and fighting experience that I don't have. So...he's better qualified to actually win in a fight.

Well i've never been accused of being good, so yeah it funny.
What would you do if this happened to you? I probably would be so shocked that it was actually happening that I would just stand & stare.

I don't know what I would do.
I read once about a twelve year old girl, who was in an elevator, when a man unzipped and exposed himself to her. She reached over, and yanked the zipper up...causing, I think, more than a little damage to his dick.
That girl rocks! I don't know if I would ever have the courage to do something like that.

I'd probably react the same way I did when I drove past the guy wanking off on the side of a rural road at 3AM. "Oh sh*t!" *break out laughing* Of course, that's only if he were flashing. If he came any closer or tried anything else . . . can we say, "Ding!"

Its gentlemanly to offer, it would be patronizing to insist.
I'm soooo not scared by this sort of behiavior. Let me explain. We had a developmently disabled nieghbor who lived with his mother. He would stand on his front lawn after she went to bed and masterbate. My roomate was terrified by this - I, on the other hand, had never seen this guy leave his home/front lawn except on short walks with his mother, and on the off-chance he attacked me, I was certain I could fend him off. The other occurance that pops into mind is, I was utilizing the campus restroom when I saw a guy lying on his back, peeking under the stall. I pulled up my pants and chased him, but his escape route included a door that he had propped opened that locked behind him and by the time I ran around the building, I lost him. I reported him to the campus police who answered,"Well, you shouldn't use restrooms on campus." YEAH - ITS MY FAULT. The police guy made me angrier than the peeping tom. Anyway, he was caught be three women in the library bathroom - go team! Useless cops.

Yep, he's wasn't escalating, apparently. But on the other hand, I assumed the 60 year old cross dressing exhibitionist who lived down the street from one of my less happy residences was harmless... until he got carted away for molesting one of the local kids.
Sexual wiring is scary enough even if you fall within the broad swath of "normal" (i.e. consenting adults -- AND NO CANNIBALISM). Once you get outside of that... you really do need to be careful.. It's all fun and games until somebody gets hurt.
And Frellster that cop should be policing nobody.... he's clearly not qualified. Perhaps you should file some sort of formal grievance with the school administration if it is a recent happening.
