L.A. Wants to End 'Master' and 'Slave' Equipment
Wed Nov 26, 8:04 AM ET Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Dan Whitcomb

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Los Angeles officials have asked that manufacturers, suppliers and contractors stop using the terms "master" and "slave" on computer equipment, saying such terms are unacceptable and offensive.

The request -- which has some suppliers furious and others busy re-labeling components -- came after an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices labeled "master" and "slave" and filed a discrimination complaint with the county's Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.

In the computer industry, "master" and "slave" are used to refer to primary and secondary hard disk drives. The terms are also used in other industries.

"Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label," Joe Sandoval, division manager of purchasing and contract services, said in a memo sent to County vendors.

"We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review, identify and remove/change any identification or labeling of equipment components that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature," Sandoval said in the memo, which was distributed last week and made available to Reuters.

The memo did not include any suggestions for alternative labels.

Dennis Tafoya, director of the affirmative action office, said in a separate memo that an "exhaustive search" had been undertaken to find all such labels and replace them with more "appropriate" ones. A form was sent to all departments to identify equipment carrying the labels "master" and "slave" or any other offensive terms.

Faced with an avalanche of complaints from vendors and the general public, Sandoval told Reuters in an interview that his memo was intended as "nothing more than a request" and not an ultimatum or policy change.

"I do understand that this term has been an industry standard for years and years and this is nothing more than a plea to vendors to see what they can do," he said. "It appears that some folks have taken this a little too literally."

Sandoval said that he had already rejected a suggestion that the county stop buying all equipment carrying the "master" and "slave" labels and had no intention of enforcing a ban on such terms with suppliers.

"But we are culturally sensitive and we have 90,000 employees," he said. "We have to take these things seriously."

Sandoval added that in addition to the e-mails he's received "telling me how stupid I am and how I should be fired" he has gotten a positive response from some companies willing to reexamine their labels.

In June, the Los Angeles city council unanimously passed a law requiring that any companies doing business with the city disclose profits they may have made from slavery in the 19th Century. In 2000, the council supported federal legislation seeking reparations for descendants of slaves.

Oh no. I once added a second hard drive to one of my older computers. Little did I know I was promoting slavery when I slaved the new HD to the old. :eek3:

Maybe if I immediately enroll in sensitivity training,,,,

I've barked and bitched about this on other boards so much that I'm burnt out on it.

So I'll just say my common concluding statement about this pathetic silliness:

I need a new planet.

I'm offended by terms like "memory stick" and "hard drive", I'm not too fond of "cache" either. IDE cable sets me off in a way I can't explain, well, I could, but I won't, due to some legal obligations involving IEEE 1994.

Can you imagine that people actually find terms like these acceptable, repugnant. My brother called me the other day and asked if I had a scanner that used "USB" cables, I was like "DUDE! don't you know the governement monitors all our phone converstations?", he apologized.

All this computer terminology is getting out of hand and it has to be stopped. I heard kids the other day talking about "floppy discs" and "routers", if this isn't nipped in the bud, these kids are gonna grow up and join groups like "MENSA", "The Gainfully Employed", "Responsible Tax Payers" and "Free Thinking Individuals", now what kind of communist state would that be, just terrible I tell you.

I apologize for the vulgarity.

I slaved some of my drives - and it works - I'll emancipate them just as soon as they develop sentience. I'm also a rapist, I forced penetration on the female end of a connector. In my defence I didn't hear it say "no."

Now I'm hearing DEVO in my head,"Let's play master & servant."

Yes, but he is a showman, and the rampage is good showmanship. What scares me is that some people think he actually provides insight and political analysis.

It's an A.M. station, but those two guys are so funny. They can make some pretty sarcastic remarks...Rush tends to get on my last nerve...Since I have to listen to politics 24/7, I prefer some wit. Bill Bosheres is good too. He is only on Sunday nights.

Let me get this straight: You can stomach listening to Roe and Garry, but not Rush? I wouldn't call them funny -- They are annoying and moronic. Their opinions are worthless. In my opinion, the two should be thrown off the air, and never allowed back on. They ticked off one "guest" because they kept asking her about nude photos of her, and the one makes the most irritating imitations. (Apparently everyone in the world is either Indian or a hick) For the record, the radio station is WLS 890AM in Chicago, and they're on the web at http://www.wlsam.com They've got a number of other hosts that are even worse. If it wasn't for the fact that they air Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, they'd be off the air.

I don't listen to them for any politcal insight.. you are right they are morons from outer space. That is my point. :rollin: Heck if you really want to know I prefer Gary Burbanks and all his outrageous phone pranks..Gilbert Narly is a hoot.
For heaven's sake, do we have to take everything so seriously.
I prefer AM talk radio. Last time I checked we still had that consitutional freedom.

If believed everything I heard on Coast to Coast every night; I might as well slice my wrist. According to half the guest on that show, we are all going to be burned to crispy critters with all the solar flares and radiation bombarding our atmosphere.
Or the sunami that will hit the west coast after we get hit by some rogue astroid.
Gee, I forgot to mention that Yellowstone national park is about ready to pop it's cork and send an explosion blasting the area as far as a 600 mile radias therefore causing the ash to darken the skies. Yes, doom and gloom is best served up as the coming global storm is close at hand...or and I forgot that the earths axis is tilting due to the suns magnetic pull on the polar regions causing the earth to shift poles. Then we are all done for...How's that for a touch or news...All thank's to our friends on AM talk radio.... :whip: :smokin:

LOL. That's a relief! I'm not sure if they have any political insight, but I'd stay away from that if they did. LOL.

Yeah, I'm hooked on AM myself. I travel Indiana as an onsite tech for a few major computer companies, so I get to spend a LOT of time in the car, and I just have to listen to talk. I'll listen to both politcal sides, but I can't stand cheap shots and insults. Naturally, that leaves me listening to static...

Hehe... I used to listen to Art Bell. It drove me up the wall when he'd pass along information he'd learned about Y2K, and you knew that it was a crock. The more cataclysmic the forecast, the more Art seemed to believe. At least it was entertaining.

Okay, the million dollar question is: what do we call Boba Fett's ship now?

seriously, as long as we're reparating here, when the hell are the Egyptians going to give me my 40 acres of oil land and a camel? I don't want to get off on a rant here but the last time those people tried to force negotiations with us there was a little something called the ten plagues (I'm Jewish, so sue me, oh wait where are you you gonna get a lawyer?)

they could call them dominant and submissive but that opens up a whole other problem *Sings* as we dance to the masochism tango!

Well, the Egyptians never promised us 40 acres and a beast of burden. That was, at one point, promised to american slaves. So, it just so happens that my friend, Karim is a lawyer - so I CAN find a non-jewish lawyer. ha! I think reparations are out of the question. The Egyptians did, however try to hunt us down and return us to slavery - so I suppose thats an option - They might look at you funny if you tried to build a pyramid. On the same note, I saw an old photo of my great-grandfather's home in Germany. Its real nice. Any chance they will give it back? Can I just go there and kick the current family out?

My vote: Queen & drone drive.
