Could someone answer a question for me please? Are there any copyright problems with using Farscape posters/ avatars in one's local newspaper?
Once the air time and network the "Mini" is going to play on is released. I intend to launch my own personnel "Scape offensive," in my local paper. Figured it's just a little something I could do to help viewership.
Can someone give me an idea about the copyright thing? Or is it a non-issue?
Thanks
S57 :)

There is a whole thread over in the strategy forum devoted entirely to copy right issues. And it is stickied near the top. Using actual Farscape images in ads does seem to be a problem.

Better yet, if you keep looking around, you'll find copyright free images that might work..and there's always text.
And welcome to the board, Scaper57. I remember you from Kansas!

And in the graphics forum, you'll find many helpful Scapers and cool artwork you can use.
Mycattoldme helped me with a series of newsprint ads that I ran in our market (#20 on the Nielsen list) before & during the last 11 eps of season 4, and just before the reruns started.

I thought I would chime in a little since I have both working knowledge of U.S. copyright laws, as well as the fact that I am a newspaper editor.
I am not sure if you own the paper in question, or if you're some type of manager ... but if you're not, I am not sure how much they will be willing to help you. Unfortunately, most newspapers have very specific content requirements to begin with, and unless you have a publisher interested in helping out, or you are in charge of the publication yourself, I fear you might not get too far, unless you are buying display advertising.
Production companies normally release publicity photos and artwork as part of media packets. These are normally things that can be reprinted as news copy with advanced persmission, as long as it's being used to promote the product (or in this case, the show) in some way.
However, the U.S. does have something called the Fair Use Act, which allows copyrighted material to be used in news copy (and in other means, too, unrelated to this topic), as long as certain conditions are met. Basically, you cannot be directly profitting from the use of the material, and you have to give proper indication of who owns the copyright, which in this case would be the Jim Henson company.
Speaking of which ... I need to get my copyright information updated on my Web site. =P
I hope that helps ...
