View Full Version : b-bumps (the *one* thing that bugs me)

Somebody is bothered by a lack of bruises when people get beat up. I'm bothered by... not sure what to call them...
the breast bumps
they gave some of the women (Natira all the time, Sikozu some of the time).
The bodice is flat and then there are two apparently hard perfectly shaped bumps that stand up... like an external skeleton. Gives me the willies.
Judith

I always thought that Sikozou had such a molded breastplate so that when she "rearranged her center of gravity", her breasts wouldn't peek through her top.
<shrugs>
It seemed logical to me.

er ... um ... there's no real delicate way of saying this ... and there is no slight intended towards either lady - both of whom are wonderful people and fine actresses ... both Ms Edgley and Ms Hill are not amply proportioned in the loomas department so they had them enhanced by airbrushing and other ... er ... augmentations.
From a seamstress point of view, it's not at all easy to make leather fit certain contours without it being somewhat bumpy.
Loomas are predominantly adipose (fatty) tissue and as both the above ladies are extremely svelte and lacking in the adipose tissue department they do not have an abundance of said tissue where those of us otherwise endowed do... if you get my drift.

That bothers me. Not about Farscape, but society in general.
They're both very attractive regardless of breast size. Why "add" any? Is that really that important?
SaraD
12-02-2003, 01:22 PM
I get the reasoning, Selena, but it still looks awful, in my estimation. Like a Looma Straightjacket (whether or not there's anything in there, that's irrelevant). I'll betcha guys wouldn't want jockstraps made out of the same material, even if it made them more... appealing. And a big IF on that one.
Selena
12-02-2003, 01:53 PM
SaraD I don't think guys would go for leather enhancements although in days of old when knights were bold .... etc .... they did wear cod pieces :dunno: why they were called that is anyone's guess ... of course the modern day version is the football sock in the Y-fronts!
If my junk mail box is any indication - size is ultra important to guys.
How they say it " Itīs not the boat, itīs how you paddle" (?)
I like bumps in all sizes.

why they were called that is anyone's guess
Because "cod" in Middle English meant a bag, and hence was used as slang for the scrotum. Truth.
(Yes, I have a thing for weird bits of etymology :D).

I think someone's pointed out that the Scarran Emperor also has quite impressive breast bumps ... :D
Personally, I think it has to do with the fact that they're using rigid molded plastic. That given, you either get isolated breast (or pectoral) "bumps", or you get the monobosom/pigeonbreast effect. Neither option is really great, IMHO.

Rydra, thank you for that interesting bit of trivia. I love stuff like that!
Yes, trying to fit leather to small bumps is tough. The nature of leather, etc. I notice that Ms Edgley's are emphasised by the makeup on her chest. Those two painted on curves located under her collar bones do a lot to create the illusion of said adipose tissue.
And Judith, I would agree about the perception of society that women have to have ample boobs in order to be attractive, when it is obvious to ANYONE that Ms Hill and Ms Edgley are beautiful women.*sigh*

Finally, a category I fit into, as well! (34FF. Try asking for that in your local lingerie section...)
I'm thinking I agree with the bit about "unexpected violence". If I were on Moya, and got shot at, kicked, hit, and generally tumbled about like some of the residents, I would want all the molded breastplate between the world and my loomas I could get.
And on a side note, wouldn't it be nice if everyone were satisfied with what size they were? Kills me when I hear these little "I can get away with not wearing a bra" girls complain about having nothing up top. I'm awed by girls who can actually *jog* without endangering their dental work. I can't even buy bras that fit me in the store. I have to order 'em from Britain. I figure you got what you got for a reason. It went with the rest of your body.
I'm pretty happy with mine, now that I know where I can get my hands on those Bioform bras with the molded side cups. Not only am I all "lifted and separated and relatively jiggle-proof", but thanks to that hard molded side cup, I could probably take a round under the armpit and be none the wiser. Actually, I was always happy with mine. It was the bra and clothing industry I was unhappy with. I'm kind of glad I'm built on the "amply endowed short girl" model. Gives me a low center of gravity. And lots of room to store spare change.

Well, hmpf, maybe Delvians nursed their little plant children with sap..after all, Zhaan ate, so she needs more than soil and water and air. Or perhaps they evolved as man eating plants on a world with a humanoid life form that they preyed on, and her 'shape' is a decoy.
Course that still doesn't explain the Hynerian...

someone mentioned Zhaan with breasts, and something to go along with that: most/all the females on Farscape have breasts. Now it is not necessary for every creature to have them (our lovely ape and monkey relatives don't) but every bipedial being has them on the show.
Now I know that probably has more to do with the actors inside the costumes, but if we are going to go really in depth here...
 it is worth mentioning.

One thing I have to give them a lot of credit for is the female PK armour. As in there is no "special" female pk armour that features ridiculous armoured breast bumps apparently intended to create a shell trap right over the poor lady's heart. You see it a lot in sci-fi, especially animated sci-fi, and occasionally in live action as well. Voyager's laughable breasted space suits come to mind, but we didn't see it here. I thank them for that.
As for Natira who says they're breasts at all? They might vaguely resemble breasts but considering she's naked and they seemingly have no use in feeding young (no openings) I'd say they're something else that simply looks like breasts.
I still await they day when someone will actually grow the mivonks to depict a primary female alien character without breasts of any kind.

Just because a Hynerian is aquatic does not mean that they do not nurse their young. There's all manner of strange creatures on our planet so why would they be any different on UT planets?
Take the Platypus for instance ... it is aquatic, has a bill like a duck, fur and webbed feet, lays eggs and suckles it's young ... I've heard Aussies refer to it as God's left overs.

Why did they use a guy's chest? Have you ever seen a woman who has had to have a double mastectomy? Larry LaBonte, a photographer here in the Twin Cities, took a series of photos, absolutely gorgeous, black and white, and very much art.
Two women meet, greet, one takes off her shirt, you think, omigod she is taking off her shirt, and she has no breasts. Her chest is flat, not even any nipples, nothing. You can see her ribs, just, no fatty deposits. Then the other woman takes off her shirt and she is also without breasts, flat, not even nipples.
And yet they are women, and it is obvious they are women, in their faces, in the way they stand.
The cultural assumption is that identity is embodied (if that is the correct word for it) in our physical attributes. Breasts make the women as much as testes make the man.
And there was a cultural assumption operating in the fact that they chose a guy's chest to show a woman without breasts. As if they couldn't even imagine what a woman looks like without those particular secondary sexual characteristics.
Interesting conversation.

Ah, Stanz. One of my favorite guest stars!
As far as bra sizes go, I'll do you one better. That ain't the half of how confusing they are.
For one thing, there is no "standard". A 34C will be a different "size" from manufacturer to manufacturer, and sometimes, even from style to style within a certain brand. There is no regulation or even "generally agreed upon" standard. Some manufacturerers tell you to add 4 or five inches to your chest (just the ribs) measurement to get your band size. Others want you to add 2 or 3. Some ask that you do no math at all. Some don't bother telling you how they came up with their sizing.
Cup sizes are a rough measure of relative "projection and volume". A 34D is "bigger in relation to the measure of her ribcage" than someone who is a 38D. Generally, to get a cup size, you measure around the fullest bit of your chest, holding the tape loose but level. How you are supposed to accomplish this alone is a complete mystery to me, unless you are a contortionist, and very teeny to boot, because measuring tapes do not conform to something the rough size and shape of a mini-topology of the Andes easily. This measure, you subtract whatever whacko measurement you got for your band size, and it gives you a difference in inches, a number, generally 1 to whatever. In most manufacturers, 1 = A, 2 = B, 3= C, 4 = D.
Beyond that, cup letters don't even stay consistent. Some larger bras in the U.S. then progress DD, DDD, DDDD, like they're afraid to use the rest of the alphabet. (Assuming they even make anything over a D. Some don't even make Ds!) In Britain, they tend to go E, F, FF or G, G if last size was a FF. Some in Britain even extend through H in standard sizes. In the U.S. if you actually find something in a DD and up, the band sizes typically start at 36 or 38, making them useless for me.
The type of cups make a difference, too. Two women with the same "size" may have totally different shapes to their breasts. I, for instance, wear a cup size bigger than my measurements (best I can tell, who can tell with this method?) indicate I should, because apparently, I am shaped very "round". If you looked at me from behind, without a bra and my arms up, you would probably see that my breasts are wider than the rest of me. I can't wear little shelf bras that only come up halfway. Gives me that "breast on a platter" look, and I get spillover, or worse, spillunder, where part of your breast is hiding out in your armpit. Stretchy cups, in general, can be worn smaller, because they will stretch to accomodate. The width of the cups makes a difference. Again, different from manufacturer to manufacturer. I found one that works for me, and those cups don't stretch.
In short, either you guess, give up, or stick with what you've always worn or what your mother wore, or whatever you can find, no matter how uncomfortable or unflattering it is, or you do some research and trial and error, and find something that works by trying it on, at least if you've got anything to hold up. Some women hate that plastic side insert in Bioforms. I love them. Once I got used to having something rigid under my arms, which I did in about a day. Ordering a bra is fun now that I have something I can wear. Biggest decision I have to make is which style and which color. Used to be agonizing trying to find a Playtex with stretchy enough cups that I didn't look too smooshed. And sadly, all women's clothing seems to be based on the same "nobody knows what the hell we're doing, not even us" sizing model.
Why can't women's pants also be sized by just waist and inseam? Why, oh why? And a chest measurement would be handy with women's shirts.
Anyway, back to bras. Basically, a cup size can't be a consistent measure of volume. They must take into account that a woman with a wider chest will likely have a breast with a wider "base of attachment" so to speak. And likely more space between her breasts, where, do to a decent job, a bra must come into contact with the chest wall. Also, breasts extend upward differently. The curve of mine "start" not too far below my collarbones. I need a deep cup, or half of me isn't in it. Add to that the fact that it is nigh on impossible to measure the "volume" of a breast. Breasts aren't perfectly round, on most people. (Unless you bought them and had them installed.) They're more teardrop shaped on most people. In short, "Oh, that it were that easy!"
On the other hand, I can use my bra as a pith helmet, in a pinch, so I shouldn't complain.

try being a guy 6'5" and not fat. I have not been able to buy clothing at any so-called value store in years. It seems that clothing manufacturers think that if you are tall... you have to be fat as well. I have wide shoulders and not a fat belly. So I find a shirt that fits my shoulders... and I swim in it over the rest of my body. Or the pants are the right length... but the waistline is halfway up my belly because the clothing manufacturers think that because I have long legs... I must also have a big belly.
Or try finding size 15+ shoes/boots. Under $100.
I have been looking for a pair of glove that FIT my hands for 10 years. I have looked everywhere and have NEVER found a pair that actually fit. I had a pair made... but that was an exhorbenant amount of monies for gloves.

No, I do understand the difficulty of not being the standard as far as clothes go. Like some other people here...my bra size is bigger than it should be in proportion to the rest of my body. I actually have a hard time finding shirts sometimes. It seems like lately in America (don't know about anywhere else) there's been a fashion trend towards smaller breasts. Lately it seems like the prettier a shirt is, the more likely it's made for smaller breasts. And ALL button shirts are out.

I swear I didn't go looking for them, :ewink: but I came across the pictures (and in Ms. Hill's case, stills and a clip from the movie "Hotel de Love") on the web and in alt.binaries.multimedia.farscape. Gigi did a nude photo shoot for a magazine (I don't know which). There is a full portfolio of picures, both black and white and color, which are artsy and feisty (as you might imagine) at the same time. It's all a bit too much for a fanboy to handle, actually.
Raelee also did a photo shoot with another woman (Allison Cratchley). They appear to be "buddy" shots promoting something or other (though exactly what, given that their naked or close to naked in every picture) I'm not sure. Sigh.
Please don't ask me to post anything, because (a) I didn't keep them and (b) this isn't that kind of board (thank goodness) (though this thread has me wondering . . . .)

Well thank you for that scintillating report. We were getting worried that you might have had far more fun than anyone should be allowed to at one of the Cons where the said ladies were present.

She was in Hotel de Love? I saw that a long time ago...don't remember her, but I barely remember the movie. It was kinda weird though.

Try having arms and legs that are too long for the size of your torso -- or a torso that is too short for the rest of you. And hips that are imbalanced according to the size of your waist and chest. Can't buy most dresses because they're too long in the torso or too small in the hips (or on the reverse too large in the chest.) I've only found one specific kind of jeans that work for me because all the others are either too short in the leg, too tight in the hips, or too big in the waist. General problems buying long sleeved shirts because my arms are too long compared to the size of my torso.
Thus the reason why I tend to find one pair of pants (or anything) that I like and buy multiple pairs of the same thing because I never know when they're going to discontinue it, and if they do, I'm SoL.
Random fact: Most people's arm width from tip to tip is as long as they are tall. Mine are a couple inches too long.
And sports bras are my hero.

Yes and when you do figure one out they discontinue the "model", just like your favourite lipstick colour !!! I hate that.
c.
That's what forced me to start bra shopping overseas. I had exactly one model of Playtex bra that I could just squeeze into, and then they stopped making it in a 34DDD. Which didn't really fit anyway, but it was the closest I could get because the cups stretched. Bali made what I like to call "alleged DDDs", but they were closer to DD cups in Playtex, so I had that lovely "quadraboob" look when I tried to wear them, and half my breasts squashed against my chest wall and under my arm. And Bali has a very wide "flat bit that goes between your breasts" in all their styles. Which I don't need. There's like a centimeter of "plain" between my "peaks". And I need an underwire, darn it. None of those stretchy "we fit nine billion sizes comfy sleep bra from 32A to 52J" things for me.
I'm telling you, if I hadn't discovered www.bravissimo.com and www.figleaves.com (I used to order from their British site, before Bioforms migrated to their U.S. site, too), it would be hazardous for me to walk fast and I would own virtually no nice lingerie and a lot fewer clothes. Bravissimo is this fabulous British site that caters to the well endowed. Strappy tops with built in underwire bras that actually work and their fitted tops are an absolute God-send, as far as I'm concerned.
Lipstick I'm not so picky about.

Take the Platypus for instance ... it is aquatic, has a bill like a duck, fur and webbed feet, lays eggs and suckles it's young ... I've heard Aussies refer to it as God's left overs.
but you do not need fatty breasts to nurse young. in other words, they do not need to stay "inflated" (I know it is a bad description), all the time. But Farscape has all the females have breast except that one in the Flax.
If you can't tell am trying to steer clear of the OT bra sizing discussion :0

No, I do understand the difficulty of not being the standard as far as clothes go. Like some other people here...my bra size is bigger than it should be in proportion to the rest of my body. I actually have a hard time finding shirts sometimes. It seems like lately in America (don't know about anywhere else) there's been a fashion trend towards smaller breasts. Lately it seems like the prettier a shirt is, the more likely it's made for smaller breasts. And ALL button shirts are out.
Like I say, Britain seems to be the most boob-friendly country there is. I love these cute little strappy tops, and yes, they do hold me up. I can even take the straps off my shoulders and wander around for hours, and they don't budge. I did that the night I received it in the mail to test its claim that the straps are mostly for looks, and the rest of the hidden bra does the heavy lifting.

And they recently added a fitted top. With three sizes within each size. It's only in white for now, as they just introduced it, but I'm telling you, that's what I'm getting myself for Christmas. It's been ages (like since I was nine) since I've had a button up blouse that really fit properly. I have the additional problem of being very narrow in the shoulders.

I've ordered from them repeatedly, and I've always had a great experience.

And to make things more complicated...If I'm not wrong, I believe that we're the only species on earth with breasts that are "inflated" while we're not pregnant or nursing.

What's to say they're even for nursing? Being the little pleasure-seeking machines they are, I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't there just for recreation and nothing else. Not everything has to have some high-priority evolutionary purpose. Or for that matter, make sense.
Or, well, they're amphibious, so perhaps they're reallly flotation devices.

Can't be shock. Not if SaraD was around for both the "ignore this thread" thread and the infamous "cat vomit" thread. Breasts are gonna stir wayyyyyyyy more replies than either of those.
More "breast people" in both senses of the word than there are "cat people" I bet.

Try finding a decent pair of shoes in a EE or EEE (9-1/2) that don't make you :hork: when you look at 'em. Or a decent pair of men's slacks with an odd sized waist but an even sized inseam.

Well, come on, even Miss Junior Tough Chick of The Universe can't kick serious eema unless she's got the right kind of "lifting and separating" action going on.
Akhna can't concentrate on squashing entire galaxies under her heel if her underwire's poking her in the wrong spot.
And how, pray tell, is a girl supposed to walk on ceilings if all she's worried about is that her loomas might fall out of her top? I bet that's why Frau Blucher was so cranky. Couldn't find a cute little strappy top in her size. Boobs are serious business, even in the UTs.

BTW: I always thought "Jirls Kick Eema" should be on a tee shirt

Conveniently enough, both. Girl can't lead a frontal assault when she's being assaulted by her front. Personally, I like the "Jirl Power" one. Well, that and I'd like a shirt that says "Talk Nerdy To Me."
Perhaps Santa will hear.
