I'm at the moment trying frantically to write a short essay on gender roles in Farscape in the almost total absence of useful literature on the subject. I have found one essay online - http://www.femspec.org/samples/farscape.html - but that only deals with the women. Personally, I am more interested in the depiction of males, and particularly men, on the show. However, material on that is even harder to find. Now I have found a mention of a paper apparently presented in 2000 on the subject on some web page:

"Bates, B.R. (2000). Fractured men in fractured times: A mythopoetic discussion of (post)heroic masculinity in Farscape. Manuscript to be presented to the Gender Studies Interest Group of the Southern States Communication Association Convention, New Orleans, LA March 29-April 3, 2000. Top Paper in Gender Studies."

Could you find that paper with the information provided, if it has been published anywhere? 'Cause I have no idea how to go about this.

LOL. Okay, note to self: don't post supposedly academic stuff at 3 a.m. when your brain is already asleep. Errrrm... I could have edited this, but it's too hilarious, so I'll leave it for you to have a good laugh at. ;-)

What I really meant to say was 'the depiction of men, particularly John...'

Sorry for the confusion. *g*

LOL -- I didn't even notice that, Hmpf! :rollin:

I'm afraid I can't help you, but I'm sure one of our college Scapers can get their school's research librarian to hunt this down for you :D If not, you can try looking up the group itself and contacting them. I'm sure they'd be happy to send/sell you a copy of the materials from the conference.

Another tactic: You've probably seen this guy's c.v. (since I think that's where you got the blurb above), but why not try to locate him and ask for a copy? His contact info is here: http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~batesb/contact.html
