View Full Version : We aren't the only ones that are tired of Snore-Fi

I was just catching up on some info on the Digital Bits, a DVD website that I enjoy, and Bill, the main man, had some comments on Sciffy and the new Galactica.
By the way, did any of you sit through part one of Sci-Fi's new Battlestar Galactica miniseries last night? Gods... I haven't been that bored watching TV in a very long time. What a total snore fest. Two hours and almost nothing happened... then, when it did, it was all off screen. The shaky, gun camera cinematography to the battle footage was cool, but that's about it. Don't think I'll be tuning in for part two. What's the deal with Sci-Fi these days anyway? It's all this pseudo-science reality-style crappola. Bryant Gumbel tracking down UFOs, some half-baked schmoe guessing the names of your deal loved ones, or watching people get the piss scared out of them by Shannon Doherty. Plus the occasional B-grade "original" film... and about a hundred hours of that Stargate TV show every week. Yikes.
AMEN Brutha! I also encourage anyone that enjoys DVD's and movies in general to check out his site.

P.S. He's a Farscape fan as well. :D

I visit the Digital Bits several times a day. In fact, it was on their page where I had learned of the Farscape cancellation. Good page!

sci-fi?
They still have a channel?
Somebody tell me when Stargate is scheduled to come back with new shows. Until then I will more than likely not see anything on the channel. I did tape the Battlestar Galactica miniseries just to see how bad they screwed it up. Now I just have to wait until everything else on TV sucks bad enough that watching the miniseries is a "better alternative" to doing nothing.

Spider01 - may I suggest that you save BSG for a night when you're having trouble sleeping. It's better than Tylenol PM or Sominex. You'll be asleep within 30 minutes.:aok:

...and it is, in a BSG:TOS word, complete felgercarb! Even the basic storytelling has gigantic holes.
And, oh yeah:zzzzzzzzzzzz:kitty:
What Skiffy knows about sci-fi would barely fit into a thimble.

I disagree. There was plenty of interesting character drama. It was a breath of fresh air from the usual crap that Skiffy airs. At least it was actual sci-fi. I coulda done without the Harvey ripoff (but no, the sex didn't bother me, i mean, hey, I found Noranti getting an orgasm while cooking to be entertaining, sex stuff doesn't bother me), with the neural clone on a chip and all, but other than that, I liked it just fine.
I do fear for it if it goes to series though. Who knows what kind of stuff Bonnie and Skiffy will want to put in it. Moore said he wants to focus on the characters, but just wait, Bonnie's gonna demand they throw in space vampires or giant worms or something stupid *rolls eyes*

From the Hollywood Reporter this morning:
Dec. 11, 2003
'Galactica' 2nd stage blasts off
The second night of the Sci Fi Channel miniseries "Battlestar Galactica" rocketed past the first to deliver the channel's highest-rated program of the year. "Galactica," starring Edward James Olmos, gathered 4.5 million total viewers Tuesday, surpassing the 3.9 million who watched Monday's opening of the four-hour miniseries. Tuesday's tally gave Sci Fi not only enough ratings power to blast past the WB Network and UPN in primetime but provided the third-highest-ranked program in the station's history. With an average of 4.2 million viewers, "Galactica" finished behind "Steven Spielberg Presents Taken" (5 million) and "Frank Herbert's Dune" (4.6 million) but bettered the more recent sequel, "Children of Dune" (2.7 million). Also Tuesday, Bravo's combination of "Celebrity Poker Showdown" and "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" cooled in their second week together. "Showdown" dropped to 1.3 million from 1.6 million last week, while "Queer Eye" slipped on a similar scale to 2 million. (Andrew Wallenstein)

BSG aired? Sorry, I must have missed it- either that, or I fell asleep.

Sorry, but this is what I've been afraid of. Science Fiction is now dead. They've discovered a way of appealing to the lowest common denominator, and no longer will they cater to the science fiction fans for whom the network was created. It is science fiction for people who don't like science fiction.
This show was nothing but character drama. Sadly, I didn't care anything about the characters. The stated plot developed slowly and fizzled out. Imagine if we only saw D'Argo telling John that the Gamek base was destroyed, or the command carrier, and instead we were treated to John, Aeryn, D'Argo, and Rygel holding grudges against each other. Imagine Lord of The Rings told in this manner. "Pippin, look! The ents are attacking the tower!" Seriously, this reminds me of Monty Python's skit about the science fiction movie: A narrator says that "in a scene too expensive to film, disaster was averted..."
If they were to edit it down to a 2 hour movie, it might have been better. Virtually nothing of the original series was left. But, then again, if they couldn't use the name 'Battlestar Galactica' people wouldn't have tuned in at all.
I'm all for science fiction shows that are designed to satisfy the core geeks and the vast mainstream alike. I'd just prefer that those shows be good, instead of, y'know, agressively mediocre.
I caught a few minutes of Part 1 while working out at the gym. Nice special effects, which made me pine for Firefly, and the bit about the ship being turned into a museum-slash-gift shop was mildly amusing. But the whole thing seemed too gloomy and serious, and none of the characters caught my interest. Then again, what little I've seen of the original series looks staggeringly dumb, so maybe I'm not the intended audience.
I'm also really tired of any series that thinks the best villain is a hot, sexy chick who just happens to be evil.

The scary thing about all of this is that Bonnie can now go to the execs at NBC and say she knows what she's doing and knows scifi. And she can get away with it now. Much like Rick Bergman can get away with the way he's slowly but surely destroying the Star Trek franchise. This is a sad day indeed people<sigh>

- Gratuitous off-camera baby murder - ooh, aren't those Cylons evil? Scar-y.
- Gratuitous spine-tingling, spine-GLOWING sex scene just in case, you know,
you didn't get the idea that _they're not human!!!_. Duh.
- Mothballed Galactica and vipers as future museum with gift shop, good
idea. It does, however, create some problems, both in terms of TOS
universe and the fact that this thing doesn't seem antiquated enough to
serve as a museum.
- Off-camera destruction of human civilization, bad idea.
And, above all, aren't we supposed to care about these people and their quest for survival? Well, I didn't. Nothing moved me. At least TOS had heart - this did not.
As far as ratings, I'd say the show probably got a big boost from the NY Times reviewer, who must have seen something in it; though what that was is beyond me.

Ironically, real life doesn't jive with 'art.' Take a look at www.cylon.org/bsg/desanto-viper-01.html
It's a sin.

We're probably not going to see BSG in England for a while. I suspect the higher ratings for the second part may be because everyone who had heard about the first part tuned in to see how awful it really was.
I'd be interested to see if the ratings for a rerun would be comparable.

I suspect I'd have liked the Singer/DeSanto version. The destruction of the BSG viper mock-ups just reminds me of what could have happened to the dismantled "Farscape" set.
Off-topic, isn't Cylon Alliance the best?! Two Brain runs a class site!

Spot on!
BTW, you're lucky if you don't get to see it. If you do, you'll see how bad it is.

This is scary, they actually pulled ratings for the BSG rehack? Bonnie must have paid someone off! Either that or it was spoony feed time for all the tards in tardsville. I saw part of it, wasn't even interested, my husband walked into the room, and was like "isn't that the chick from Dances With Wolves??" That about sums it up. BTW I would rather watch Queer Eye anyday instead of snice fi, at least the gay guys have laugh quality!
