View Full Version : Calling All Good Thoughts!

Since this seems to be the place to come with troubles, here's a call going out for some prayers, good thoughts, etc. My cousin's wife got sick a couple of weeks with the flu and seemed to have recovered. Then last week she got sinus infection. Her husband took her to the emergency room, and they gave her antibiotics for her headache and earaches. It didn't seem to be working, but she went to work anyway. She felt worse this weekend, so she was trying to sleep it off. When she tried to get out of bed, she collapsed. Her husband and his bro loaded her up and took her to the ER.

They have found out that she has meningitis, and they don't know if it is the contagious kind or not. The doctor said if they had just put her back to bed, like they were going to, she'd have been dead in 12 hrs. Right now, it's not looking good. She can't talk, and she has been unconscious for 2 days now. They aren't sure if she will even wake up. If she does, she may have extensive brain damage. She doesn't know anyone or where she is.

She has a 10 yo son, and her husband refuses to leave the hospital. I live too far away to go down now, and I can't get off work. They have had a lot of financial problems lately, and this is going to sink them. She could really use some prayers/good vibes sent her way.

It's gonna be one of those weeks...

ABsolutely - you have our prayers & support. Tell them they've got a "few" scapers working the prayerways for them. We hope there will be a good turn around for her. That's so tough - hang in there! (The wheel is on the downside - it will go up - somehow)

Thanks, guys! It's nice to have someone to talk to when family isn't up for it. It's scary to think that something like that can happen so fast. I never worry about it if I get a little cold or earache, and headaches are a part of daily life for me. You don't think that it can lead to brain damage or death! I've had a headache for the last week that I assumed was part of this stupid flu junk going around, but that was one of the symptoms they said is a big one for meningitis (not that I'm concerned about mine, but still!).

They can't get her fever under 100 degrees, so that's their biggest concern right now. They have found air pockets on her brain, which they have never seen with a case of meningitis, so the doctors aren't sure what that means.

Gawd, I'm so sorry! Plenty of good vibes headed your way and I'm keeping your cousin's wife in my thoughts. The human brain can be incredibly resilient! I'll keep my fingers crossed that she manages to fight off the infection!

It's terrible, we always assume that it can't happen to us or the people close to us and that makes it so much harder when something does strike home...

Love and Peace and My Best Wishes!

Just a small update, well a big one for us. She woke up finally, which the doctors didn't even expect. She knows where she is now, but she can't hear and her eyes are crossed. She is able to speak a little, but she drifts in and out because of the pain and the morphine. Her fever is still high, and she is still in critical condition, but this is the first good news we've had. The doctors aren't sure if she will progress, but since she woke up, they think that is a pretty good sign. If everything goes well from here on out, she would still have to be in the hospital 10 days-3 weeks. They are still concerned about the air pockets on her brain. Right now there is no way to determine how much brain damage she has or if her hearing & eyesight will improve. It's a waiting game, but a little good news goes a long way. Thanks again, looks like all the prayers & good thoughts are working!

My cousin called last night, and said she was awake more yesterday. The doctors tried to get her to walk, but she was too weak. She is still listed as critical, but they have gotten her fever down a little. Nothing else has changed, but the doctors think it's looking up. You do good work, Scapers!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their good thoughts. My cousin's wife gets out of the hospital today, just in time to be with her family for Christmas. She still can't hear, and her eyes are still slightly crossed, but she can walk and talk again and that's enough for us right now!

On the down side, when we called my mom's aunt to pass on the good news, she told us that her daughter just had a brain aneurysm burst yesterday and is in critical condition. She is about my mom's age, early 50's, and she and my mom are very close. It's really hitting her hard. So I guess once again, I'm falling back on you guys for the good thoughts and vibes. What a year!

I'm sorry. I know what it's like to have one bad thing happen, have it get better, think that things will be okay for a while, and then get slammed with something else the next day.

How well can your cousin's wife communicate?

Well, she can talk a little now, so that's helpful for us. Her family is pretty much communicate by pointing and gesturing. She's pretty good at lip reading also, so she's getting by. She keeps saying she's going back to work in a couple of days, LOL! Somehow I think she'll have to be walking on her own and able to see clearly before they let her come back!

They still aren't sure what caused it, but they are afraid she has a hole in her sinuses or something that is allowing the infection to go to her brain. The concern is that if it's not fixed, she could get it again. They said she probably wouldn't survive a second bout of this. Scary.

As for my mom's cousin, it turns out she had a heart attack first. Apparently, the stress of that caused the aneurysm in her brain to burst. I think that must have happened after they got her to the hospital, so at least they could take immediate action.

When it rains, it pours...
