Okay... before I go back to work, I just HAD to post this article:

Perhaps he’s just been preparing his own wardrobe for when he is officially without a proper work address. Then there was Giorgio Armani, who didn’t disappoint with his collection of classically tailored suits and, as always, a celeb filled front row. And it looks as though Mr. Armani may have a bit of a rival in Alexander McQueen, as the stellar Brit debuted a surprisingly demure men’s collection, which gave a big nod to his Savile Row training. And Neil Barret: the next fashion icon in the making? You be the judge. From classic tailoring, pole dancing mamas, and a literal circus show at Etro, the Men’s shows in Milan were nothing if not exciting.

Still think 'The Big Easy' is worth the rental (and then some). But there is some sex and violence (although not gratuitous).

I saw it on a plane ride where it had been hacked to pieces by the censors; to the point where it was almost incomprehensible. But I was so intrigued I went on quest to find it. The unhacked-to-pieces version was so good, I even showed it to my mother. Sex and violence and all.

Surprisingly, she liked it. Although I don't think she really grasped the sex scenes for what they were.... Kinda surprising. I mean, she had three children!

Science Fiction is the jazz of literature

For a long time, jazz didn't get any respect in the music world.

Jazz is a free form musical style which was the parent of rock n' roll and blues and others that I can't think of right now. And to appreciate it requires sensitivity and intelligence (but not education). Jazz was dismissed by the 'musical elite' for a long time, because they didn't understand it and were not willing to open up their brains to 'get' it.

I see science fiction in the same situation as jazz used to be. Both straight literature (books) AND theatrical performances. Farscape (as an off the cuff example ;) ) is IMHO a brilliant form of social commentary. It requires intelligence to understand and sensitively to grasp but you don't need a university degree to 'get' it.

As well, it is disparaged by the 'elite' because most are not willing to open their minds and recognise what it being said and done.

By the way, I am quoting an author that I heard on Hypa Space (a program on the Canadian Space channel). If I could find out her name, I would credit her, cause I think it is a very insightful comment.

Anyway, that is my rambling and incoherent explanation of my sig. Hope I didn't confuse you too much.;)

Except I started typing my long and rambling response before you posted yours.... so I didn't see it till after I was done.

But there is one other thing about being looked down on by the 'mainstream'. While it is really annoying to those of us who appreciate what science fiction is - if it was to be embraced by mainstream society, I think it would lose its 'edge'. What makes it special. And what makes it work.

So I will happily continue to wear funny hats, smoke funny weeds and gather together in dark out of the way places to engage in our 'pursuits'. Just occasionally shine a light for those who are blind to let those that might be able to appreciate the art form know that there are others like them out here. You just have to look for us.
