A freak accident sent a local man to the hospital Wednesday morning, Local 4 reported.

Witnesses said a set of massive tires came barreling off of a tractor-trailer headed northbound on Adams Road in Rochester Hills.

The tires rolled across a parking lot outside a crowded shopping center, ricocheted off a wall and struck a man in the chest, Local 4 reported.

The man had reportedly just purchased a cup of coffee and was walking to his car when the tires came at him.

Police said the man hit could have been killed if it wasn't for the building absorbing some of the impact.

"It probably came across the parking lot in the 20 to 30 mile an hour range," said Deputy Scott Strawska of the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. "He's very lucky to be alive."

The tires, which weigh close to 1,500 pounds, took a chunk out of the building.

A worker from Titanus Cement Wall Co. in Novi picked up the tires, but would not comment on the incident.

Sheriff's investigators believe a defect caused the tires to snap off of the truck.

"It appears that there was a defect maybe in the axle somewhere that made it come off. At this time it's premature to say," said Strawska.

The man hit was hospitalized with a minor head injury.

The trucking company was expected to be cited for having defective equipment.

A spokesman said the tractor-trailer is off the road, and the company is looking into what caused the accident.
