U.S. defeats Canada for world junior gold

CBC SPORTS ONLINE - The United States has made world junior hockey history.

The American squad scored three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat Canada 4-3 in the final of the world junior hockey championship in Helsinki, Finland.

Canada led 3-1 after two periods, but the U.S. battled back with three goals in the final frame.

Patrick O'Sullivan scored the go-ahead goal – his second of the period – on a Canadian miscue to give the Americans their first-ever world junior gold medal.

Canadian goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury came out to clear the puck from a streaking O'Sullivan, but his attempt bounced off defenceman Braydon Coburn and into the Canadian net with 5:12 remaining.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Canada and especially for Fleury, who was loaned to the Canadian squad from the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins in the hopes of capturing a gold medal.
"I scored in my own net today. That doesn't help," a dejected Fleury said.

Canadian captain Dan Paille said Fleury wasn't to blame, saying that Team Canada's defence didn't help Fleury in the early minutes of the third.

"It wasn't his fault. It was just a bad bounce," Paille said of the winning goal. "No one blames the way he played in this tournament or in this game."

Canada was looking for its 11th world junior gold medal at this year's tournament, but instead had to settle for its third straight silver.

The last gold medal for Canada came in 1997 when the Canucks notched a 2-0 victory over the U.S. in Geneva.

"I thought things were going pretty well and we kind of sat back in the third period and made a couple of mental mistakes and it kind of cost us," Canadian forward Nigel Dawes said. "The last goal was self-explanatory. Things weren't meant to be tonight."

Ryan Kesler of the Vancouver Canucks and Dan Fristche of the Columbus Blue Jackets had the other goals for the United States.

Al Montoya, named the tournament's top goaltender, raised his stock for the 2004 NHL Entry draft with a solid outing.

Dawes, a Winnipeg native, scored twice for Canada, while his linemate Anthony Stewart of Toronto had a goal and two assists.

Stewart, who turned 19 on Monday, gave Canada a 3-1 cushion at 12:56 of the second period. Stewart took a cross-ice pass from Dawes, raced down the right wing and scored five-hole on Montoya for his fifth goal of the tournament.

Dawes scored his second goal of the contest just 12 seconds into the second period when he tipped a Mike Richards point shot to give the Canadian squad a 2-1 edge.

The feisty forward's sixth of the championship was made possible after Stewart's pressure caused the Americans to cough up the puck in their own zone.

Canada appeared to be in control of the game heading into the final period, but the Americans had other ideas.

The Canadians seemed to shy away from their strong forechecking and neutral zone play in the third period and the Americans made them pay with their speed and experience.

"We said `What are the things we can control?"' U.S. coach Mike Eaves said. "We needed to get more pucks and bodies at the net.

"We could have folded but we stayed with it and worked hard and got rewarded."

O'Sullivan, who plays his junior hockey with the Mississauga IceDogs of the OHL, gave the U.S. momentum when his rocket slapshot beat Fleury high on the shortside early in the third.

Kesler tied the game at three goals apiece a few minute later with a strange goal that bounced off Fleury's chest pad and over the netminder's head.

After the fluke goal, which was credited to O'Sullivan, the Canadians pressed for the equalizer, but the Americans tightened up defensively and Montoya was solid in goal until the final buzzer.

Canada and the U.S. were tied 1-1 after a feverish first period.

Dawes put the Canadian squad up 1-0 early in the opening frame when his rising wrist shot beat Montoya high on the glove side.

Stewart got the play started when he picked up the puck in the neutral zone and fed a lead pass to Dawes breaking in on the left side.

The Americans didn't let the early goal get them down. Fristche pocketed the tying goal at 8:57 with a backhand wrap-around that squeaked under Fleury.

The first period ended the way it started with end-to-end rushes and tight checking by both squads. Canada's Jeff Carter hit the goal post with one minute remaining in the period and on the next trip down the ice, Fleury stoned Bruce Stafford in close.

Earlier Monday, Finland won its third straight bronze medal at the world junior tournament with a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic.

Though it is small consolation for the Canadian squad, they have 13 players who were 18 or under and will be eligible for next year's tournament.

"There's a lot of `85s in that room so just hope this will be a learning experience and they will be able to get that gold medal next year," Canadian head coach Mario Durocher said.

Game Notes:

U.S. forward Zach Parise, a New Jersey Devils first-round draft pick, was named MVP of the tournament. Parise's father, J.P., won a gold medal with Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series.

The 2005 world junior hockey championship will be hosted by the United States in Grand Forks, N.D.

But what a way to win! An own goal on a slumping goalie.

I saw the goal and felt bad for him.
