it depends...you have generally three classifications of Hero:

Dark Hero : this is your Batman complex. he's dark and tormented, yet you know he IS the hero and will not sway from doing what is right.

Pure Hero : Spiderman complex. good guy, does the right thing all the time because he genuinely strives to DO THE RIGHT THING. he's a good guy in and out of the superhero guise. the difference between the pure hero and the dark hero is that the pure hero finds conventional methods of dealing with stress or grief. batman became the dark knight and made his headquarters in a cave. spiderman can always go to therapy.

Fence-Sitting Hero : this is the guy or gal who is always in between. doing the right thing means sometimes sacrificing and selflessness and the hero in this situation tends to be in the middle between doing the right thing or benefitting from the situation. but the hero in the end tends to do the right thing, because he or she is the hero, afterall.

i think john fits in the dark hero/fence sitting hero. he wants to do the right thing, but the decisions he makes torments him and sometimes his desire is to just stay alive and get home, but ultimately he becomes the hero because he feels that the needs of others are equally as important as his.

my favorite heroes:

batman
spiderman
x-men
buffy and the scooby gang
the crew of Star Trek:TNG
the Fellowship in the LOTR trilogy
Paul Atreides in Dune

That's a great comment, and I agree in terms of real life. I have a few heros...a large portion is all of those who serve in the Military, police, fire departments, etc. Another is one of the mechanics I work with who "rescued" me when my car broke down in the middle of a corn field and I thought the children of the corn were going to come get me. LOL Okay, so he didn't really do anything heroic, but that really meant a lot to me and I always call him my hero.

I think, though, that JrMissToughChick means not real life, like tv. Or maybe not.

For fictional characters, I would have to say heros from the Arthurian legends would be a big one. I love Lancelot first, then Arthur, and then some of the other knights...though I'm not too big on Gawain.

Hmm. I know there are more, but I have to go get ready now, so I'll post more later. Shopping for books for my last semester of classes!!! Woohoo!!!

I tend to favor the dark and tormented, which is probably why I prefer Batman and Daredevil over Spidey, though I love him too. Wonder Woman is great also. Wolverine from the X-Men movies is great also (never liked him much in the comics, too bloody). Buffy kicks a$$ (and one of the few strong superhero-like women on TV who doesn't annoy me to death). Hmm, I like Perseus, Theseus (karma caught up with him alright), Hector of Troy, Iphigenia, Hecuba of Troy (er, not really a hero but she sure got her revenge :ewink:)...Jason, fine as heroes go, lousy husband. Deserved his fate.

Anti-Heroes are great also simply because they don't always do what's right. They can go either way and often have their priorities mixed up. Rayek from Elfquest is a good example.

My favorite type of hero (of the moment) is probably the type who fails. As sick as that is, I find it more compelling to watch/read/write about someone give their all and fails, than someone who gives their all, succeeds and gets the girl at the end. I'm talking about *fiction* (NOT real life) and it depends on the type of story (as the failure shouldn't be so much a letdown as a revelation). Sometimes though the old fashioned heroes are too lovable to criticize.

Overall, most pure-hearted types bore me. If the hero isn't completely screwed up in some fashion, I'm not interested, probably because those pesky emotional scars help elevate the odds against him/her. Flaws are crucial to heroes.

I've been thinking about this, and I also like the bumbling idiot type hero. LOL The kind of hero-by-default. Like Captain Jack Sparrows, savvy? He doesn't really do anything heroic, it just all works out for him. And Madmartagan in Willow. He doesn't even want to be a hero, and yet he is. He helps to save the day. Hmm...on second thought, maybe I just like Johnny Depp and Val Kilmer... :ewink:

Believe it or not, the first guy that comes to mind is Rorschach from Watchmen. He never compromises, just keeps charging forward no matter the odds. Watchmen fans know what I'm saying.

Rorschach is a pretty good hero. I didn't think so until I got to the end of Watchmen, but he never gives up trying to do what he thinks is right, even when the situation seems hopeless.

I also like the bumbling hero type. I think it makes a better hero when the person doesn't want to be one and even tries to avoid it and stay out of trouble. Then when they are finally forced to act like a hero it's often because they care about the situation rather than getting the hero title and glory. It's also easier to care about a person as the hero of the story when they are tormented by decisions they are forced to make. Nothing annoys me more than the kind of do-right hero who goes marching cheerfully into battle and wins without ever seeming to put much effort into it.
