yup. 4 in each corner, five along the walls, not counting the corners.

Ooh, yeah...is it nice? Is it something I can eat?
Edit: Hey, samati, whatever it is, I'll split it with ya!

It's ..... 24 rose bushes!!! Woo hoo!

Aw, what am I gonna do with 24 (well, 12 once I split with samati) rose bushes? I live in campus apartments. Hmm...wonder what they'll sell for on e-Bay...? http://jm.g.free.fr/smileys/unclassified/IdeaDevil1.gif

o.k., I'm confused. Why isn't the answer 28? 1 in each corner plus 6 along the sides? (as there'd be a rosebush a 0 and at 7 from one end to the other.)

Imagine that each '8' represents a rosebush, and the '0's are just space holders:

8 8 8 8 8 8 8
8 0 0 0 0 0 8
8 0 0 0 0 0 8
8 0 0 0 0 0 8
8 0 0 0 0 0 8
8 0 0 0 0 0 8
8 8 8 8 8 8 8

Now just count the 'rose bushes.'

You can also think of it as 7 rosebushes on the first side (top), 6 rosebushes down the right side (because there's already one in the top right corner), 6 rosebushes across the bottom (because there's already one in the bottom right corner), and 5 rosebushes on the left side (because there's already one in the bottom left corner AND in the top left corner).

7 + 6 + 6 + 5 = 24 :D

The answer IS 28!! :)

(I'm feeling gloaty- Just massacre me, if I annoy you. ;)

The question is: she wants to plant a rose bush at each corner, and every meter along the sides. how many rose bushes will she need????

To prove that it's 28, I only need to look at one side, and then multiply the result by four.

If this is a metre: _ then each side looks like this: _ _ _ _ _ _ _

As a square has four courners, each side gets only one corner bush. If you plant the rose bush each at the beginning of a meter, like this @_, then a side is made up of seven of these:

@_ @_ @_ @_ @_ @_ @_

Kind of like matches. The very first rosebush is the corner.

See how each side has seven rose bushes, but only one corner filled.

Now multiply by four, and you get 28. :)

UGH! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: i posted this question over at the kansas board too,and seem's like it's a toss up between 24 or 28...so which is it?!?!...and they expect a 10 yr old to know this!?!?:eh: :irate: :pissed: :pissed:

Alexxia is correct: 24 (see diagram above)...

errr, I mean chri-baby is correct: 28, (see answer below). The key is 7 meter sides, not 7 rosebrush per side. Therefore there would be 8 top, 8 bottom, 6 right side, 6 left side.

its 28 . if you look at alexxia's diagram you'll see that her square has actually 6m sides. in order to do this you think this way:
4(corners)+[4*6] (for the sides) = 28

note a 7m side would have 6 one meter spacings in between with one corner being 0 meters and the other being 7 meters.

24.

Whoops, I didn't notice the diagram was only 6m per side. chri-baby's got the right of it.

bouyantman, maybe have your daughter draw the border of the garden on graph or grid paper, and have her put a little dot where each rosebush would be? Then she would be able to count them and notice the patterns for the sides...

Well using the advanced calculus method, and noting that each segment to the right (delta X) is equally spaced, then delineating the curve of the Y factor, and and estimating the area under the curve through a summation of the delta X's x the Y factor, and the extrapolating the figure to the closest integer, well, uh, three...

yep three is the number of drinks I'm gonna have to try and forget this problem...

And it was so easy to come up with too!!!
