You can transfer money from your checking account into your Paypal account, or you can just use a credit card to pay for purchases.

No paypal is a separate entity I think.

First you need a regular bank account so that you have a routing number and account number. Then you can put money from your bank account into your paypal account via on-line transfer.
Transfers take a couple of days from your designated bank account. Once your money is in the paypal account you can choose places where you want to purchase something - like eBay and pay using your paypal account. It's good if you don't have a credit card.

eBay bought Paypal a while ago. But they do still function as separate companies, but it makes buying and selling stuff on ebay a heck of alot easier and more secure.
