QUECHEE, Vt. — Bob Keeshan (search), star of television's "Captain Kangaroo," has died, his family said Friday.

The beloved actor and TV personality from the long-running children's show was 76.

Keeshan died of a long illness, his family said in a statement.

Keeshan began hosting the show, which featured stories, skits, vaudeville acts, songs, games and other educational activities, in 1955. "Captain Kangaroo," which is the longest running kids show in network TV history, ran until 1985.

The program was wildly popular among children and won six Emmy Awards, three Gabriels and three Peabody Awards.

Each day, Captain Kangaroo, with his sugar-bowl haircut and uniform coat, would wander through his Treasure House, chatting with his good friend Mr. Green Jeans, played by Hugh "Lumpy" Brannum.

He would visit with puppet animals, like Bunny Rabbit, who was scolded for eating too many carrots, and Mr. Moose, who loved to tell knock-knock jokes. But the show revolved about the grandfatherly Captain Kangaroo, whose name was inspired by the kangaroo pouch-like pockets of the coat Keeshan wore.

"I was impressed with the potential positive relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, so I chose an elderly character," Keeshan said.

Keeshan started his career as a receptionist for NBC Radio in New York City. Soon after, he began appearing on the TV show "Triple B Ranch," and then, as a special assistant for "The Howdy Doody Show." Soon he was on camera bringing kids toys and dressing as the clown Clarabell (search).

He created "Captain Kangaroo" with his friend Jack Miller for CBS. Keeshan was not only in front of the camera, but had a major role in shaping the programming. He also became a life-long advocate for children and at one time wrote a column about kids and television for McCall's magazine.

Keeshan was born on Long Island, New York in 1927. He married Anne Jeanne Laurie, 1950 and the couple had three children.

Mr. Green Jeans is dead.

I was a Captain Kangaroo kid. :( I liked that he didn't dumb down his voice, he was serious all the time - he just wore a silly outfit and did kid things. I guess our fearful trip is done.

I loved the moose, was it? He was hilarious when he made Capt. K say the word to make the pingppong balls drop. What was that he said?

I loved Capt. Kangaroo. :( Couldn't stand Mr. Rogers - thought he was a pedophile.

I too grew up with Captain Kangaroo. I even had a Bunny Rabbit puppet. Great show. Sorry he's gone. I'm starting to feel old.

Arrrrgh! That question is going to drive me nuts! I can't remember, either! Someone come up with this!

Rest in Peace, Captain.

I grew up with him too, watched the show all the time. For some odd reason, I was scared to death of Grandfather Clock. Whenever that character would come on I would hide behind the couch. To this day, things like talking trees creep me out.

I'm surprised Keeshan was only 76. I thought he had to be a lot older.

I barely remember the show, except for the ping-pong balls.
RIP Bob.

I remember the activity box best. The shoebox with scissors and glue and tape and pencils and crayons. I longed for a box just like it. I lusted after that box. To this day I credit the good Captain with my obsessive love of office supplies.

yes, he was indeed a OS dealer. CK got many of us hooked at a tender age. My heart beats faster just thinking of that shoebox, still today. What we need is a support group, I think.

Hi, my name is Sara and I'm an OS junkie. I haven't bought a pencil in three months.

We grieve not only for the man, but for part of our lost childhood that passes with him.

Wherever you are, Bob, know that you were loved by oh so very many.

Lord, I was a Cap'n Kangaroo junkie since I was a little kid. I regret his passing. Peace for him, and fond remembrance...

If my memory serves the ping pong balls would drop on him whenever he answered a knock-knock joke or said the punch line to a joke....

I will miss him as he was a big part of my childhood....:cry2:

God Bless him......
