View Full Version : "ET" edited to protect our sensitive ears...
Warning RANT follows...
Thank god channel 10 is here to protect us from the sort of filth that is said on television. They are screening "ET" at the moment - just prior to 8pm and they've edited out the word "penis"! (Elliot's outburts - "It was nothing like that penis-breath")
Heaven forbid that a child should hear such a filthy and vulgar word on television! I'm actually going to write a letter to the station! How dare they show such smut? Any movie that has to have the word "penis" edited out of it, isn't fit for viewing by children!!! I'm disgusted and sickened... and I've *got* one...

But it's perfectly alright to use the F*** word. (As long as it is in an adjective form...)
My favorite is when they air the movie 'Young Frankenstein.' Goldie's character says that the monster must have a "'huge braunstucker" (sp?) and even though it isn't an obscene word and no child could understand what in the world that could be, the censors have changed it to "huge personality." That somehow ruins the movie for me.

I remember when 'PC' was the faux pas of the late '80's and conservatives mocked all of the liberals for it. Now the the tables have turned 180 degrees, and apparently they've decided that there are there are no good parents left in this country, and they've got to legislate against four-letter words.
This morning I heard Mr. Bush talking about the $14M school voucher plan that he was issuing to parents in the Distric of Columbia, to 'liberate' parents from the 'dangers' of public education. What he didn't tell them was that he'd be giving them a $2000 grant to replace the $6000 that the city already pays for each student in the public education system.
Jenna and her sister are model citizens - Why don't we let Mr. Bush raise all of our kids through legislation?

Nitpicking - That was Terry Garr in Young Frankenstein :)
Anywho, the censors have gone completely out of control. That's ridiculous, especially with Young Frankenstein.

My mistake. ;) It's been awhile since I've seen the movie, and it would have been soooo eeaasssyyy to check my facts. ;)
vhsiv, there is nothing wrong or evil in standing up for decency. Standards in this country have slid so much that networks demand to be allowed to use the most foul language on the air. If you want to teach your children to be vulgar, that is your perogative. Do not tell me that I should teach my children the same. Why do some people oppose allowing others the choice of schools?
As for Jenna and Barbara, at least they weren't raised to become pathological liars, and they know the meaning of the word 'is.'

Sorry if I offended you BillF - it's just that I don't think that things *that parents should be doing* - are things that need to be legislated. (What's next? Procreation licenses?)
If there are parents out there teaching their kids to be vulgarians and hoodlums, well, the State ought to intervene and relieve those parents of the burden, in the interest of public safety. But to legislate this stuff?
I suspect we're on the same side of the decency 'fence', but the school choice issue is a bit of a deception writ large. Some parochial schools are inexpensive, some aren't. But it is disingenous to 'give' someone $2000, only to cut $6000 from their State educational allotment. If there were enough seats in all of those parochial schools to go around, and enough Muslim, Jewish and agnostic parents willing to send their kids to those schools, well fine. But the net effect defunds public education, eliminating teaching jobs, etc. etc.

I'm kind of on the fence here.
I agree that parents should do more to raise their children. While it'd be nice to take the kids away from a bad influence, I'm appaled at the concept of taking someone's kid away from them. (How would you like to be taken from your mom?) Even though I hate the idea that someone could raise their child to be a bigot, I can't invade their home.
Anyway, enforcing the current FCC regulations on foul language isn't creating new legislation. And it isn't telling people how to raise their children. Over the last 8 years, there have been many attempts to do that: Under the 'Village' concept, we were told not to spank children. Even the UN got involved, declaring it a form of abuse. That is way too invasive. A sign of future time, I'm afraid.
I'll have to look into the voucher program. The last I had seen, it didn't take money away from the public schools. I'm big on education, and I'd like to see everyone have the ability to send their children to better schools.
Anyway, as to the original topic... There used to be just 7 dirty words you couldn't say on TV. (Thank you, George Carlin) The incidents with 'E.T.' and 'Young Frankenstein' are examples where the networks are just going to extremes. What words will they bleep out next? (And don't say Semprini!) ;)

The voucher thing: I was aginst it at first but we just moved and my brothers go to a school that they need to be out of. They are suspended if they are late to a class they'll fail if they get a C- and they can't bring they're school books home.

I remember hearing that phrase when I was VERY little...about four. I had no idea what it meant, so I decided to test it out my mom the next time she made me mad. (I vaguely understood that it was some kind of insult).
I got in a lot of trouble.

I guess using a fake ID and underage drinking are perfectly fine?

Okay, what I don't get about the underage drinking/fake ID thing.
I drank when I was underage. A lot of people do. But if you're the president's daughter, and everyone in the world knows what you look like, and how old you are...why would you really think that you could get away with using a fake id?

okay who's the prick who decided to dick around with censoring the word "penis"? I mean that really balls me something fierce when some joker gets a hard-on for controlling us and gives people the shaft like that, another boneheaded decision like that it's a low blow indeed and I'd hate to see things come to a head like that when a bunch of people go off half-cocked and it leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth especially considering they could show this movie mostly uncut (wow, 11 penis jokes in one post, anyone care to break that record?)

My favourite edit is King Ralph, when he's asking the "one question every American asks himself when he buys a new car: Will this car get me BROADS?" (When the dialogue was "laid.")
Now, I always thought the edit would be more insulting to certain easily-insulted people than the original! :whip:
