Considering what a ruckus the voting caused I am somewhat surprised at how many people ask what the Frelly Awards are/were. :lol
It would be really cool to have real Frellys to give out this year ...

Now where could I find someone to make 40 awards

What did we decide the awards would look like if there were real ones? I seem to remember a discussion along those lines.

Maybe someone should talk to Herdthinner about those faboo dolls she does... Although she might choke on 40.

I can't change it now because that's how they were announced and grinner didn't fuss about it then. I will however be more careful about capitalization in the future.

generic_screenname was the only one who asked me to change the capitalization for him and there was ample opportunity for people to comment and request changes etc. GS was the only one who did.:aok: One of the reasons that all the Nominees were capitalized was due to MS Word automatically capitalizing everything at the beginning of a new line after hitting 'Enter'

As for the awards, Frunium_Slip mentioned something about making them last year ... but I think he thinks I've forgotten ;). Speaking of which, I think GS offered to do certificates last year but I never did get any of them.

Never-the-less, 40 awards is a lot to churn out by any one person so maybe we could get a couple of talented souls to collaborate on them.

Selena

Just an update on the Frelly Awards ... we are thinking of resurrecting them again this year and maybe going a step or two further ... a real live presentation at Burbank Con.

This of course will require a lot of planning and effort from a number of people. So the question is, anyone interested in helping?

BrowderChick and Frunium Slip are taking charge of the awards - they are making them ... yes, that's right they are hand making the awards. :woohoo: FS and BC.

If we are able to get a time slot at the Con we would like to do an Academy Award type of presentation :lol complete with a pseudo Joan Rivers to nit pick the nominees outfits and an MC (host) and sidekick to read the nominations and the winners ...

Now I heard that Xothas has some ties to the Creation people and the organizers of the Burbank Con. But the difficulty is actually getting a hold of Xothas who is a somewhat elusive character. So if anyone out there can tap Xothas on the shoulder and ask him to check his e-mail and PMs it would be really helpful :aok:

So what do y'all think? Is this something we should do for a laugh?

What's a ruckus?

Selena
05-20-2004, 11:58 PM
ruckus: n row, commotion, disturbance or tumult

Considering how the voting was posted as polls so everyone could only vote once and the habit that polls have of popping to the top when someone votes and sliding into oblivion when noone votes ... it kind of messed up the board for the whole 24 hours the polls were up.
But apart from lots of griping about the voting and not being able to find certain threads that people liked to see on page 1 most people were pretty decent about it.

And yes, the acceptance speeches were wonderful and funny! I particularly remember Ratscape's because he so rarely ventures into the alien domain of OT :lol ... he scurried onto the stage with a trail of toilet paper attached to his shoe (so he told us) bowed, made a few cryptic comments and was gone as quickly as he had arived.
grinner of course was his usual modest, unassuming self even in the spotlight :news: of reporters and all the cameras :paparazzi
There were lots of others too. Pity the thread got cut it was a great piece of our history.

............But this year! ... This year we will make our mark for posterity!

So think about it folks if you're going to Burbank and you could fill one of the roles please step up to the plate and volunteer. You'll have lots of fun and so will the rest of us.

Sponge

If it's going to be resurrected this year, when will :-

1) nominations start (and who can make them) ?

and

2) Voting. When/where/how?

Can fanfic hosted elsewhere be eligible for a Frelly, as long as it's author is registered here? I write Harrigan's Heroes, and though I'll nominate it for the Sparky's this year, a Frelly would be good as well.

How about fanfic awards for :

1) Weirdest original character in a fic

2) Best overall new character in a fic

Can't get to Burbank for the con either. Far too expensive.

Selena
05-21-2004, 11:55 AM
There is a whole Frelly Awards thread Sponge, but it's a bit hard to find right now as the search function is off-line. You'd have to look though thousands of threads as we are a prolific lot at this site :D

The Frelly Awards were specific to Farscape and this web site, although many of our members cross post at Kansas. For that reason a story would have to be Farscape related in some way like a spin off.

I intend posting the nomination around the end of August or after Dragon*Con in September and leaving them open for about 1 month. Last year any member of FMD was allowed to post a nomination and there were specific criteria in each category that had to be met. That will most likely be the same again this year.

Voting was a bit chaotic as the only way I could figure out how to make sure that everyone only had 1 vote was to post the nominees in each category as a poll. Everyone at FMD got to vote for their favorites.

Of course as is typical in such situations, there were poeple who were very unhappy with the disruption 40 polls made to the site for the 24 hours that voting was open. There were others who claimed they didn't know anything about the nominations or the voting and were upset about being left out. And then there were those who used the poll threads as discussion areas, instead of just voting and found that when the polls were closed and deleted after the voting was over, that they lost lots of posts.

So I'm not real sure what we will do this year about voting. I am looking into it and trying to find some way of doing it fairly and not disrupting the entire site in the process.

SabaceanBabe
05-21-2004, 12:34 PM
I don't suppose PMs to Selena would work for voting... :ewink:

Selena
05-21-2004, 12:38 PM
:spew: :fear: :flee:

I'm only allowed 70 PMs to my mail box and that would take care of the first hour. There has to be some site out there in cyberspace that allows one to vote on-line. I just haven't found it yet.

Sponge
05-21-2004, 02:18 PM
Selena - As you can see from my sig, and my last post, I write Harrigan's Heroes. It's a Farscape military-adventure 'hero' fic. Got a whole bunch of new characters in it. It's not posted here, but it is hosted at two other places (see links in my sig). Since I'm registered here, I wondered whether I'd still be eligible for an award if my work isn't here at FMD. Check it out for yourself, and see if it's worthy. Surely you'd vote for a fellow Australian's work (hint, hint) ?

Selena
05-21-2004, 02:34 PM
Sponge, I'm not sure if you've browsed throuigh the first post at this thread ... there's a couple of categories for fiction one was the Short fiction award and the other was the long fiction award. To be eligble all you have to do is be a member of FMD and have someone nominate you / your story for an award.

Now trying to influnce the judges with notions of nationalism is admirable, but you probably need to suck up to someone else, as I must remain impartial no matter what I still call home ;) (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more!)

:whisper: Off the record, my eldest son was born in Busselton :D

BrowderChick
05-21-2004, 02:57 PM
I think what should happen is during the nominations that if there is anything that is nominated should also have a link to it so that everyone can see what its about. And then also for the voting we should also be able to see what we are voting for. Just as an example......If I was nominated for my previous signature then I would have to have it as a post as I cant have all the stuff I had before because of space. I know Ms. Wiggles is greatly missed by alot of people and I have had tons of PMs asking me where she is. I would have to make a post of my original signature for that to be used for a vote. So if there is something that can be linked that is a part of this site then it would need to have a link so we know what we are voting on. Does that make any sense?

selena, try http://www.misterpoll.com/ you can create your own multi-question polls in different ways. i'm not sure if its exactly what you're looking for since i don't know a) how many questions it allows and b) how many options it allows. but it might help.

http://www.papayapolls.com/ is a place where you can create online surveys.

http://www.createapoll.com/ is another place.

That's the only award that is non-collectible. It's a wooden spoon award and there is no trophy. But I do like the idea of doggy doo doo as a trophy :D

I posted this at Kansas ...

I'm not sure how many people here are familiar with these awards.

We started them last year at FMD as a bit of a morale booster when everyone's spirits were sagging and it was so much fun we want to do it again this year.

The Frelly Awards are about supporting each other, our campaigning, our fundraising and promoting our favorite show - Farscape and expressing our creativity through writing and designing.

There are many categories and include such sections as ...
graphics and Farscape related costumes and 'stuff',
literature sections which include long and short story, poetry, limericks and haikus.
fundraising,
promoting Farscape through community outreach projects etc.
There were a couple of rather crazy categories too which honored the absurd.

Frelly Awards in 2004
This year I am working with a couple of people to have actual 'awards' to hand out to the winners ... the 'awards' will be truly 'frelled' like their namesake. I am toying with the idea of having a segment at Burbank Con in November when the winners will be announced.
However, there is nothing set as yet, with regards to this event, and a lot of planning needs to be done over the next 4 months. I have however, put out some feelers to get an idea if it's possible and we are currently presenting the idea to TPTB who have the yay or nay say in it.

So if you want to be part of it, come on and hop on the Frelly Awards bandwagon.

What do you have to do to be eligible?

Be creative, be witty, write campaign letters, write stories, make costumes, create Farscape related 'stuff', design graphics and make posters and bumper stickers and above all promote Farscape. Come up with great ideas and brag about them. Then when the nomination time comes around in September, nominate the worthy people to be considered for the awards.

If you want to check out last year's winners you can do so at FMD ... the thread is called 2003 ~ 1st Annual Frelly Awards - The Winner is... and you can find it in the Out of their Minds forum or search on Frelly Awards

A proposal to consider
Finally if you are good at organizing, if you are a male and have a flair for public speaking and are incredibly funny or if you are a female with 'great attributes' AND you are going to Burbank Con get in touch with me either here or at FMD - I have a great proposal for you ... if you are good with a mike and can act like Joan Rivers - I need you!

Selena, did you think about how you're going to collect votes this year? I was thinking we could link to a Zoomerang (http://info.zoomerang.com/) page (it's a free survey site). The Zoomerang Basic is free to use. That way we wouldn't have to deal with the twenty voting threads in the OT forum. Just a suggestion...

Selena

Thanks for the suggestion janey_13. BrowderChick is actually organizing the voting this year as I am swamped with other things. I think she's looking into a voting site. I will pass your suggestion on to her.

:joy: :thewave: This year the Frelly Awards http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/5/5_8_10v.gif will be presented live during the Burbank Con. We have just been given the go ahead by Creation. We will be presenting 15 awards at the Con and all the web site related awards will be presented off stage.

If you're a winner this year, you are in for a treat! :aok: Frunium Slip has been locked in the dungeon :ballchain for weeks, making the awards http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/3/3_2_9.gif http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/3/3_2_10.gif ... they are awesome!

Yes, you've probably wondered where the Frun has been, and he gently reminded me that he's missing his on-line family because I've been such a slave driver :whip:
But they are almost finished. :woohoo:
