Well, I'm right in the middle of a snow storm (they've been predicting this Thursday; by yesterday I stopped believing them). We've only got about an inch right now, but it's snowing so hard the whole world looks white. The bad part is that by tonight, it's changing to freezing rain, sleet and ice. It will be fun driving to work tomorrow.

Honestly! I was in SC one year and they got, not even a coating of snow. There were "slippery spots" warnings on the TV like we have Thunderstorm Advisories. It was good for a laugh.

heck, back in 1986 or 87, the Western Suburbs of Chicago flooded. We got about the equivenant of 4 feet of rain in 24 hours. Everything flooded. anyway, everything shut down... you couldn't get anywhere until the flooding was under control. That was a fun time... except for our having to get tetnus shots and other things because of viral and bacterial infections. not that I had any of those... it was just a precaution. Kids were lined up and given shots. that wasn't fun.

I love travelling off-season. We went to NC (the Outer Banks) in December, of all times... but it was GREAT. We had the beaches to ourselves, and no waiting at the restaurants (of course, just the ones that were open, but there was still a good choice)... that was the best time I've had in a loooong while. Almost better than Europe.

What a mess!
We ended up getting about 5" of snow, and at some point last night, it stopped snowing and started in with the freezing rain, then changed back to snow. And it's more freezing rain right now.
According to the reporters, a lot of the streets were cleared overnight, but now they're icy. It's gonna take me an hour just to shovel the driveway.

Well we got about a foot of new snow in the last couple of days, but that usually isn't much of a problem.
The problem is that it is -31DegC right now and going down. The high(!) tomorrow is -33DegC.
The dogs don't even want to go out in this weather. I open the backdoor for them, they poke their noses out and turn around and glare at me - like it was somehow my fault.
THEN they run to the front door as though they expect the weather will be different outside this side of the house. Sigh.
Phooey.

You also have to remember, down here we don't have the salt trucks like you guys up there do. We have sand trucks, but not a lot.

What, do you have like weird "southern cars?"

That is why we should be allowed to use STUDDED snowtire. Hell, I have a set that I run illegally when I go up to Northern Michigan... and you can drive like a maniac on ice and still maintain control...
but I love my 1.5 inch spikes that I run on frozen lakes... that is traction.

The amount of salt they use on the roads up here tends to eat the metal on our cars. And its too frelling cold to use the carwash in the winter.....
I wish I was in the south....what snow is there is nothing like it is here.

The Dukes of Hazzard thing. A while ago she said to me she doesn't want my friends tracking dirt on her rugs, and my friend's(not mine, I swear!) response was "She does know we have paved roads up here, right?"

southern Europe perhaps?

01-26-2004, 09:21 PM
Oh ok then...But I personally would rather be in the south....I like the cooking, the weather, the manners, and how they all just do things very relaxed and slow....It seems that they take their time and ar not like up here where everything is rush, rush, rush.....At least that is how it tends to be here in NY and I have lived in various places all across this state....even in the country its like that....

When I was in college and there was still a fair amount of undeveloped land hereabouts, I'd go out at night and drive down the levee roads (dirt), pick a nice quiet spot, and listen to the radio and look at the moon & stars...
The best birthday I ever had was one of those nights. *sigh*

my area is supposed to get 7 to 12 inches of snow over the next two days.
Atlanta, Michigan where I am heading to work a rally, is supposed to get 27 to 42 inches this week.

Our forecast calls for 8-15" by tomorrow evening. It won't start until later today.
They never call off work here, so all it means is that tomorrow morning I'll have more work to do to get into work and the drive will take longer. But at least it is an excuse to wear jeans.
I'll take the snow over the incredibly cold weather we keep having. I can't remember a more consistently (or should I say relentlessly?) bitter cold January. I'm glad this will be my last winter in Massachusetts.
