View Full Version : Library Project 4.0

Hey all, it's time to start beating the drum for the Library Project again. In addition to all the individual efforts (which to paraphrase Red, Rock like a Rocking thing), the Library Project has made three major purchases from ADV. The last one was particularly satisfying.

- The Dallas and Fort Worth Libraries were so very appreciative. The Dallas main library actually tracked me down to confirm that it was a gift, as the gal I originally talked to had been transferred, and her replacement couldn't believe that someone would give them a gift like that. They really, really wanted to keep it. Apparently they don't get very many gifts like this.
- The DC libraries don't normally carry DVDs, but we found some branches that were willing to make exceptions for us. The librarian at the Capitol View branch is first in line to check them out.
- In Boston we were able to supplement what the Boston Scapers had already accomplished, and due to their efforts we were able to place Farscape in affluent areas like Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard.
- In addition to all this we were able to fill 8 requests for Farscape sent to us by librarians, one to a library, which supplies DVDs to the entire state of South Dakota.

We have done so much. YOU have done so much. Each of these donations means dozens, if not hundreds of new eyeballs for Farscape. The Twin Cities Scapers donated three sets of 1.1 - 1.7 last fall. One of the TCScapers keeps up his motivation by keeping an eye one the number of holds on the DVDs. Apparently they are never on the shelf due to being perpetually reserved. Every Single One of these DVDs has at least two holds on them Right Now. You do the math. 21 DVDs with a 2-week check out limit over 5 months. That means that Farscape has been checked out roughly 210 times. 210 instances of new Scapers or re-energize existing Scapers. And that's just one Library System. This is happening at over 100 libraries across the US (and Germany, and Australia and very soon now, the UK). DVDs donated to Waco, TX have been seen in Chicago thanks to the inter-library loan service. The ripples are spreading far and wide, and nobody know where they will end, or if they will end.

Now it's time for the next step. Detroit, Atlanta and Houston. The Detroit Scapers are already researching the best possible distribution for these DVDs. If any Atlanta or Houston area Scapers would also like to make some recommendations, I'm all ears. Obviously the faster we get the DVDs to libraries, the quicker we can get them on the shelves and available to potential Scapers. Unfortunately this last purchase and Citadel project (In which he Library and the Military Project gave two Farscape Boxed Sets to 4000 college students with cabin fever),has pretty much wiped out the Library fund. I don't have the exact numbers, but I think it's at about $35. The library project needs your help, and there are many, many ways to go about it.

* Obviously you can donate directly to the library fund here (https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=jul%40watchfarscape.com&item_name=Save+Farscape.com+Library+Project&tax=0&currency_code=USD). Once the fund reaches $1000 we will make our next purchase.
* Feeling international? The UK Scapers have started their own version of the library project and are taking donations here (https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=liggo_t%40yahoo.co.uk&item_name=UK%3Alibrary+project&no_note=1&tax=0&currency_code=GBP)
* Scaper University (http://www.cafeshops.com/scaperu) will be donating half of all profits to the library projects.
* Can't or don't want to do paypal? Buy a Farscape DVD and donate it to your local library. Even a single copy of Premier/I-ET in a rural area might hook a future Neilson box family.
* Finally, I need Scapers willing to put in some legwork, and help publicize the project to librarians. I'm going to start a separate thread to start brainstorming the best way to go about doing this.

Finally, once again, Thank You. We keep saying it, but it doesn't get any less true with time. This project would be nowhere without all of you. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the fund, who has donated materials, who have talked about Farscape with their librarians, and those who have filled out request forms and placed holds on existing DVDs.

Great news on the status of the project, and great work as always Mickie.

Regarding Atlanta, I have actually been looking into this but neither of the major Atlanta library systems has a significant DVD section and their web sites don't appear to indicate that they accept donations of DVDs. However, my research (aside from checking one branch) has been limited to what is on their web sites, so it's not complete.

We're having a Southeast Scapers meeting this weekend (hopefully), and I will discuss this with everyone and hopefully someone will have the time to volunteer to take the lead on researching this.

For a little background, the Atlanta metro area is HUGE and is comprised of many counties, however the heart of Atlanta consists of 2 counties (Fulton and DeKalb) plus the City of Atlanta, and the major suburbs of Atlanta are primarily located in a handful of counties that directly adjoin Fulton and DeKalb (Cobb, Gwinnett, Clayton, and Rockdale). The City of Atlanta library system is combined with Fulton County (Atlanta-Fulton County Public Libraries). The other counties have independent library systems.

Aside from the county public libraries, another avenue that I believe might be fruitful is to check out the major universities in the area (Georgia Tech, Emory, Georgia State -- and the University of Georgia in Athens, which is 60 miles from Atlanta). I'll see if we can get these researched as well if there is no objection.

Thanks AG, It's so very very helpful to get a local perspective in a project like this. I can usually count on there being a x city library system, but when it comes to whether I should be putting all the DVDs into it, or spreading them out more (and where that more should be)

Glad to help, Mickie. This is a project I've been wanting to get moving on locally, but just haven't had the time to do the research myself. I'll definitely see if we have any willing volunteer researchers at the meeting this weekend.

Am thinking of scping the local library system...they are woefully poor on DVDs in general. I have to get a library card, too. I keep forgetting to go over and talk to them! :lol

I just thought that I'd share this e-mail I received today

Yes, our library is interested in the Farscape DVD's. ***** was here earlier today and donated a copy of the premiere DVD. We would also be very willing to accept additional donations of other DVD's in this series. Our young adult librarian is excited about the possibility of our library acquiring this series.

Then about half an hour later, from the same woman

Just had a young adult and his mom at the reference desk. When they saw the DVD for Farscape, they were very excited and hope we can get the entire set.

Does anyone have any extra first season DVDs laying around the we can send this very excited librarian? The scaper who donated 1.1, this was his third donation to the library project, he also has donated to Berkley and the New York City library.

I have the first I think 5 or 6 DVDs from Season 1 that RescueFarscape (I think it was RescueFarscape ?) got from that guy on Ebay that was selling them in bulk a while back if it helps.

Edited to add: For the first season I have the first 7 DVDs (the separate releases) Premiere through Jeremiah Crichton. And I have TWO sets of these first 7 DVDs. You are welcome to them if you want them.

PM'd you. Re: Not complete sets. Don't worry, I'm not picky and neither are most libraries who ask us for DVDs :)

FYI, for those playing along at home, we are up to:

488 DVDs
64 VHS
34 Boxed Sets
26 Books

to 113 Libraries

I hope to have a funds update in the next couple of days. I'll update the Library Project web page at that time.

Anybody else have donation information that they'd like to add?

Love you guys!

The library webpage has been update here (http://www.wdsection.com/mickie/Library/LibraryQuery_FE.html),

The library fund is currently at $175.17, slow but steady :). We've also added almost twenty DVDs to libraries in the last month :D
