What's Dreaming Mind?
A small business run by Don Drake a very nice man. Who does very nice by hand art books. I just had a lovely conversation with him about doing a Farscape edition art book for us. He is very interested and would like more details. He sounds willing to help us make this a fundraising project. Now the books will not be cheap as they are handcrafted by him but you can have a look at his website to see the kind of detail and work he puts into these. We may even want to consider these for Burbank as gifts to the cast and crew.
He needs to know what we would like and about how much we would be willing to spend per book. Also about how many books do we think we want. We'll also need some wonderful art oriented Scapers to come up with a design for the cover. If we want the whole book to be fan based art then we will need submissions for that along with how much art work do we want in the book.
So have a peek and tell me what you all think?

He's close so I can pick up the books and mail them if it will cut price. Which I'm sure it would.

What kind of art are we talking about? (got to be keeping an eye on the copyright, one-off art is kosher, mass produced is problematic. And I rather doubt that your friend is going to do it at cost)

I was hoping if it was original art work from our very own Scapers it wouldn't be a copyright problem. We aren't looking to make a profit either. Its more like commissioned art work.
(Thinking that may not be clear)

Have you seen the Gold Bird of Paradise designs from SaneTV?
Check out this thread for the design:

I think his journals with a gold Bird of Paradise design would be very attractive. Maybe SaneTV would be willing to share their images. Just a thought.
I love this idea, and I would definitely be interested in a Farscape themed journal.

Great Idea CosmicTheorist about using a Bird of Paradise. It doesn't have to be the same as the one used by SaneTV either.
Are we interested in only journals or do we want an art book filled with Scaper fan art?

Hi all...
I am very, very very flattered that you thought of my artwork from saneTV (http://sanetv.com) for this kind of project. :D However, due to the user agreement I have with CafePress, those images are not available for other uses. Given time, parameters and so on, I could design original work for the book, if there was interest.
What Mickie says: all the art would have to be copy-right safe. VERY copyright-safe, like along the lines of what was used for the cookbooks. That makes the artwork a challenge, but not impossible.
These are elegant products, but fairly pricey. How much would Farscape fans be willing to spend on a product that does not have any licenced images or logos from the show?

I wonder what it would take to get licenced images or logos from the show? Anyone have a clue?
uisceboo thanks for stepping in here. I love the work you've done!

Licenced images, to the best of my knowledge, would probably cost a hefty fee. More importantly, the product would have to meet the approval and standards of the Jim Henson Company, and be something they would want to sell.
Henson would probably want a portion of the profits. This is part of where they get money to make Farscape (through sale of licenced products), which is why we want to respect their trademark rights and copyrights.

This is very cool! There are so many talanted artists drawing Farscape in the community. :aok:

So next question is if we decide to make it a fan art book are we going to have troubles. I don't think we would be purchasing a huge number of these because of the cost but I do think these would be great collector items (even if unofficial).
Or would everyone prefer more of a scrapbook journal type thing. Something for cover art and blank pages.

the way I see it, if it was possible for fans to use licenced properties for fundraising or campaign projects with any kind of ease, fans would have done it already. For the most part, fans have chosen to go the copyright-safe way -- not only because it is easier, but because it shows solid support for the Jim Henson Company. That support is part of what helps bring the show back.
However, as the cookbook experience has shown, as well as saneTV and other Cafe shops, fans do enjoy purchasing fandom-related items that do not feature the images and logos from the Farscape series. Scapers have proven that their creativity can do wonderful, impressive things, and still not step on anyone's toes.
You may want to look over the thread on copyright (stickied in this topic). (http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4881) Also, I wrote an article (http://www.watchfarscape.com/news/article.php?newsid=405) about the topic a few months ago, and interviewed the artists from the cookbook. They decribed the creative process very nicely -- and they did a frelling good job.
You may want to ask around as to how much anyone would want to pay for such an item, to see if this kind of project would be feasible.

Thanks I'll be doing some research I see. I might cross post in the graphics forumn to see if we have any artists willing to do a project like this too.
