I'm trying to put together a map for a powerpoint show.

The problem is the formats aren't quite compatible.

A screen dump of my mapping software won't do the job. (I've tried it ;) )

So what I'm doing is getting a print-preview and copying that "image" to the clipboard.

The problem comes in when I past the image into powerpoint.

The import is Huge. I mean FRIGGIN HUGE, like GINORMOUS HUGE! (like when I make the Page Setup screen to 34"*44", it's still only 10% of the import's size)

So I resize the import down to fit a standard PPT page. (no problem there). The pic is nice and crisp and ready to be projected.

This is where the problem comes in: When I emailed the ppt to the person doing the presentation, it doesn't work. It turns out that the symbols on the map aren't "images" but a font that's propritary to the original software, and instead of being the proper symbols, they appear as "a" "b" "c" etc.

This poses a problem, as we don't want to bundle the extra fonts with the presentation.

So next step:

Resize the image to fit on a 8.5*11 worksheet, then I try to save the clipboard data as a picture. Note that I did this out of PPT. (Right click|Save as picture...)

Tried a jpg. Won't work. The transparent background on the image goes to black.
Tried a giff. Goes all fuzzy
Tried a tiff. PPT can't display it.
Tried a png. Still fuzzy.

Note that I don't have access to any graphics software more powerful than MS-Paint

Any advice?

I actually had to do this last year in one of my classes. If I remember correctly, I exported the map into a JPEG file and then I inserted the map into my presentation as a picture. I think that is what I did but it was almost a year ago when I did it.

Oops, I didn't read all of your post saying that .jpg would not work. I'm no help then because .jpg was the only way that I could get my map into my presentation.

Hmmm, try highlighting the entire picture (merge it into one object if necessary) then just say copy.
Open MS Paint and say "paste". Most likely it'll tell you the area isn't large enough and if you want to adjust the size, just say yes. Once it's in Paint, you should be able to safe it as a JPG or even a BMP and then re-import it as a picture into PPT.

Or maybe even easier (depending on what version of PPT you have):
Go to the slide with the offending piece of graphics.
Choose "Save as" from the "File" menu.
In the dialog box, under file format is a pull-down where you should be able to choose anything from JPG to TIFF. TIFF is the largest, but will also give th best quality. The file-format is chosen right under the box where you type in the name for the file.
When you hit enter it'll then ask you if you want to safe the entire slide-show and you click "No", so it'll only safe the one slide you're on.
Then you should be able to re-insert as a picture.

Hope that helps and ain't too cryptic :)

Love and Peace and Best Of Luck!

You could download an evaluation copy of paint shop pro. It's free for 30 days and then stops working until you put in the authorization code. But, it's the full scale program. It's the one I use, and it is very intuitive and user friendly. :) Just edit image/resize. http://www.jasc.com/products/paintshoppro/
