Where do I begin? First of all – I’m not some sadistic freak who gets off on excessive violence and gore… well, actually I am – as long as the violence is staged and the gore is made from latex and kayo syrup. I’m one of those folks who enjoy excessive gore in films, yet can’t stand looking at autopsy photos. I know the difference between fantasy and reality.
Having said this – Manhunt is one sick f**king game! The premise is pretty basic: kill or be killed. The plot of the game is reminiscent of “The Running Man” – you play as a criminal named Cash who has just been executed… problem is – you’re not dead. Someone has other plans for you. Seems you’ve been chosen as the star of a “snuff film” where murder and mayhem reign supreme. You are now thrown into a sadistic battle for survival where every breath could be your last. As Cash, you must make your way through the different levels, making sure to stay quite and keep out of sight. Freaks and murderers are hunting you for sport and you must take them out before they take you out. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, it’s far from it.
This isn’t your average “shoot’em up – bang bang – run around and find stuff” kind of game. The key to success is “patience” – you creep from shadow to shadow and wait for the perfect moment to “take out the trash” – bad guys in the game are tough and pretty intelligent – meaning that you have to be careful. Stealth is a must and patience a plus. A rather twisted piece of fun I have with the game is the executions – you sneak up on the baddies and take’em out. The more patient you are, the more gruesome the execution. The game can be excruciatingly frustrating at times. And there’s a lot of trial and error you have to go through for each level. There’s one way in and one way out – but there’s an infinite number of ways to go about getting there – which is a big reason why I enjoy this game. No two game plays will be alike – which really adds to the replay value.
Manhunt was made by Rockstar – the guys who made Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. So it’s pretty obvious that it’s going to be geared towards adults. This game pulls no punches and gives no apologies. Swearing by characters is pretty constant – and at times quite funny. (Having executed a thug with a metal baseball bat, his buddy turns and runs away screaming “They ain’t payin’ me enough for this sh!t!”) Brutal violence and gore run rampant throughout and the atmosphere is extremely nerve-racking. (especially when you go into your first-person view and you hear Cash’s heart pounding in his ears) The game is never easy – even when set on ‘easy,’ levels can become frustrating and bad guys can take a lot of punishment before finally succumbing to their injuries. But the payoff is more than worth it.
Like I said, I’m not a violent person by nature, but this game really brings out that sadistic side of me that never gets to have any fun. This game won’t be for everyone – but for those who can take it, this is the bloodsport to end all others.
