Got this from my professional organization this morning:

Dear Members:

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to join with our colleagues across Canada in celebrating National Engineering & Geoscience Week. APEGGA, together with all of the provincial associations that regulate the practice of engineering and/or the geosciences and the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers, are all hosting events. This special week provides an opportunity for us to highlight our accomplishments, raise the public's awareness of our professions, celebrate science, math and technology and have some fun.

We've asked a number of municipalities across the province to officially proclaim a National Engineering & Geoscience Week in their community. APEGGA has also planned a number of celebrations and my hope is that you will be able to show your support by attending or participating in some of them such as the various Science Olympics to be held in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie. These events feature teams of students from Grades 1 to 12 solving problems and having a lot of fun in the process.

Speaking of fun, the Habitat for Humanity Pi-Throw Contest organized by the University of Alberta's Faculty of Engineering had a great start last year and is an activity in which both companies and individuals can participate by sending a pie to someone special. Engineering students also invite
U of A alumni and faculty to join them at their first annual Spring Formal on March 5.

Also new this year is our corporate Food Structure Challenge. We believe the challenge captures the spirit of our work and professions. Members can have great fun using packing tape and donated non-perishable food items to create an innovative structure. The food collected for the structures will ultimately benefit community groups.

And be sure to watch for the 16-page National Engineering & Geoscience Week colour insert in today's Edmonton Journal (February 26) and Friday's Calgary Herald (February 27). This year it includes a special puzzle page for children.

This is just a sample of the activities and events planned. So, please join us in celebrating National Engineering & Geoscience Week. For more detailed information, please consult the Calendar of Events at http://www.apegga.org/NEGW/events.html
