Hi Scapers,

I've got one chance to hook my Mom. She's coming to visit next week and promised to watch ONE episode with me. I want to choose wisely so that she'll want to watch more.

Now normally I would show someone Premier first, but Mom doesn't like science fiction. I'm thinking one of the more shippy episodes might be more palatable for her. Or maybe one of the funnier ones would work. Or maybe even a really dramatic one. But which one??

Suggestions, please! She needs to enjoy it and end up with a craving to see more.

I vote for Nerve because it makes a non-Scaper care about the characters. Plus it's a cliffhanger so she can be a little torrmented and may ask for the second part - then you know you've got her.

What are some of your mothers favorite shows? And what is it she likes about them?

She just got into The Sopranos on DVD. She likes movies like Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Pay It Forward, Fried Green Tomatoes, suspensful crime dramas, comedies like the Austin Powers movies. She doesn't watch a lot of TV shows other than the gardening and decorating shows. She likes Queer Eye. She watches Fox News. She reads books - mostly conservative political commentary and suspensful fiction. The story has to grab her interest right away.

I'm not sure why she likes the shows she likes. I think there has to be something to attract her intest right away, and have suspense and also good characters (sounds a lot like Farscape!).

Keep those suggestions coming! Thanks everyone.

I would definitely go with The Flax - nothing too icky, lots of humour, it's shippy as well as suspenseful...kinda Farscape Lite.

Okay then maybe WGFA? My mom hated it, I loved it but your mom might like it

I would say LGM but there are three eps in it... If you make a tape edit the credits out and put them together just say it's a movie :rollin:

Hmmm. I wonder if I would convince her to watch a multi-part group of eps? Maybe!

Show her one and then maybe she'll ask to see the other two... Or better show her DWTB... it has a TBC that wil make you want to watch the next five eps right away Just to see Aeryn come back

I'd go with A Human Reaction. It's on Earth, so you won't have too much space stuff to turn her off. The aliens don't appear until the end, except for Moyans. (I had a friend who got creeped out by Scorpy and wouldn't watch anymore.) There's some really nice father/son stuff, plus the shippy stuff, plus just the stuff about John having to deal with Earth not treating his friends very well.

It was one of the first episodes that I watched all the way through. Plus, it has a really good plot.

A Human Reaction is my Mum's favorite episode.

And she's a bigger fan than me! ;)

Look at the Princress is good to get her hooked she has to watch more. Coup by Clam or Crackers doesn't Matter are both funny episodes.

Show her the LATP trilogy. That was sort of my re-intro to the show and it definitely hooked me. Just look at my sig! LOL.

She may also like The Flax.

Maybe humor would be up her alley. I'd choose Scratch N' Sniff. She might get a little grossed out with Coup by Clam with Noranti pissing in the bucket and the various bodily functions going on in that eppy. :rollin:

I love Die Me Dichotomy and SOD, but you'd probably do a lot of 'splaining of what's going on with Crichton and plus get out a box of tissue. However, that kiss in SOD is majorly smokin' and makes up for it. ;)

I'm not sure about that... My mom hated the Jena thing.

My Mom's first episode that she watched was 'Losing Time' and that seemed to reel her in.

Well I am a Mom and I was hooked by Premiere. If she goes for good looking lead who can act then she would like this ep. I was drawn to those blue eyes and the detailed plot of the first ep. I would not have kept watching if the show had not been so good right from the first. It does help if your Mom likes some form of fantasy or Scifi though. If she is a romantic she will watch just to see the J/A interactions.

My own Mom - age 75 - really liked Kansas (humour) and any ep where Rygel has good lines. Her fav show is Judging Amy - so Farscape is a little far out for her but she likes the character development arcs in FS.

Take it from a Mom - John is a real reason to start watching.
:D

A human reaction is my suggestion...nice and suspensful and keeps you guessing till the end.

If she claims she doesn't like sci-fi then I personally would definitely recommend Premiere and if you have tied her down securely then pop in A Human Reaction which is another good one and my personal favorites .... PK Tech Girl, Nerve and Hidden Memory ... and then the Look At The Princess trilogy. If you have the Pizza and margaritas ready to go by the time you get around to the third margarita your Mum will be asking what other episodes you have :D and you can whip out Out of their Minds.

If you can get your mom to watch a multi-parter, Look At the Princess would be great with lots of romance, intrigue, broken hearts, deception.

For a single ep, I like The Flax idea. Its a good "mom" episode.

I saw Season Of Death as my first episode and I got hooked by that!

"A Bug's Life" was my first episode, but it was "Nerve" and "Hidden Memory" that made me a Scaper. Hmm, I believe my mom's first Farscape experience was with "The Locket." I got her interested enough to keep watching, but she wasn't truly hooked until she saw the Liars, Guns, and Money trilogy.

I'm a Mom, too. Trying to 'scape my daughter! (Not there yet, but gaining).

The Flax was the first one I "made" her watch with me. I also showed her LATP Trilogy and A Human Reaction. I tried the Premier, but it lost her attention.

I showed her Part 1 of LATP without telling her it was a 3-parter (I know, I'm bad), and of course, she asked to see the next one. And the 3rd one. She wandered in while I was watching "Terra Firma" once, and her first comment was "I can't believe I've actually seen this one" (she initially mistook it for A Human Reaction). When I told her she hadn't, she watched the whole episode w/me and asked questions. She's at the stage now of saying she can "understand" why I like it and she would, too, 'if she liked that sort of thing'. My psychology is to expose her to the "relationship" and earth/planet-based eps.

PK Tech Girl would be a really nice introduction to the characters - plus the love triangle romance. It is a relatively straightforward exciting episode and it should be able to draw in even a non-sci fi fan.

Another choice for one episode romance: The Flax.

I wouldn't recommend Look at the Princess trilogy until she is more familiar with the characters (especially if you are trying to hook her on the John/Aeryn romance). Same with Out of Their Minds (which is a personal favourite of mine). The reason Out of Their Minds works so well is because the audience is familar with all the characters and manage to keep straight who is in which body. And for a newbie introductory episode, it might just be too confusing.

The Way We Weren't is a great episode - but it is probably to dark. And again, the writers come at the John/Aeryn romance from a somewhat oblique angle. If you are unfamilar with the characters you might miss it.

My vote is for PK Tech Girl.

Oh, and I don't know if this helps, but if your mom is anything like I am, she'll watch with you just to get to spend some time with you. At your instigation!

the other day my parents and two of their friends walked in when i was watching "human reaction". they got sucked in and watched the whole thing. before they could really get up i started nerve and despite it being very late(especially for old ppl) 2 of the 4 actually stuck around and finished the 2 parter with me...

i didn't really think that highly of the flux, aside from A&J stuck on the transport pod...

if i had my way i would make a new viewer watch all the season one & 2 big plot episodes.

off the top of my head-
premier-pk tech-nerve 2parts
then i would skip ahead to LATP CDM WGFA and the locket...
if they then watched the last 4 episodes of season 2 i'm sure they would go back and fill in all the blanks from S1 & S2....

i left out human reaction because its recaped in nerve and i think its a good idea to move to season 2 as fast as possible...

anywho thats how i would infect someone if i wanted them to take it hook line and sinker....

some ppl like me should just watch the series in order. unfortunately i took a strange route(i wish i didn't). i watched 4th then 3rd then 1st then 2nd. i was given the series out of order and i'm to impatient to wait... that was 3 months ago, and it only took me 5 days to watch them all.... so anything would have worked on me...

I'm a recent 'scaper myself and now I'm trying to 'scape my hubby. He's a HARD SELL I tell you. He has seen some of the show when I've hosted Farscape get togethers at our house when the show was on the air. I believe he sort of watched Terra Firma which like you said is an Earth-based eppy. But it still didn't sell him on the show. I've been trying to figure out what angle to approach him with episodes. He was an X-File fan and like the mytharc of that show for awhile, as well as the humorous episodes. Maybe Hidden Memory with the intro of Scorpy would catch his attention or maybe Scratch N' Sniff as one of the humorous episodes. But from what he has seen so far of Farscape, he still calls it Muppets in space. He can't seem to get past the fact that Rygel and Pilot are puppets. However, something caught his attention when he walked in the room while was watching "Meltdown" recently. Hmmm...I wonder what that was? LOL ;)

You know, as one who recently discovered Farscape music videos, that's one way you might attract some people. They are short and exciting. I can't imagine someone watching one and not being a little intrigued. Videos by LithiumDoll are my favorites. "Let Me Entertain You", "Wear Sunscreen", "This is Us", and "Clocks" (a shippy one) are all teriffic.

Here's the link to "Let Me Entertain You:"

My mom was hooked from the pilot on, but I think that is because all three of her sons are Scapers. I hooked my wife by showing the Locket, TLAP trilogy and TWWW. She actually asks to watch when nothing else is on.

By my unofficial count of positive mentions, here are the most recommended:

1. (tie) The Flax or Look At The Princess trilogy
2. A Human Reaction
3. (tie) Premier or Nerve or PKTech Girl
4. (tie) Won't Get Fooled Again or Liars, Guns, and Money or Hidden Memory or Locket

I'll have to think about what she'd get into most, without getting turned off by the science fictiony stuff. If there is a bunch of stuff going on that she doesn't understand, it will turn her off.

Assuming she doesn't completely give up on Sci Fi, I thought I might also get her to watch the Firefly "Serenity" two parter by telling her it's a movie. Think I can get away with it? :)

Then I think that PK Tech Girl is the one you want. The Rygel/Durka stuff might not be her cup of tea, but for sure the Gilina/John/Aeryn love triangle should keep her interested.
