I'm a long-time sci-fi fan, in print and on TV. Going back five or six years, I was getting really, really bored with the sci-fi shows that were on. I watched, on occassion, the SciFi Channel, to see where it was going with it's programming.

Along came Farscape, and I've been hooked on this show like nothing I've ever experienced. I was never one to frequent internet bboards, until Farscape. I never recorded ep's of shows to re-watch them, until Farscape. I never rented or bought DVD's of any TV show, ever, until Farscape.

I don't know exactly why this show drives me so crazy. Lust for Claudia Black, or Gigi Edgely? The need for vicarious adventure through Crichton's eyes? The intrigue of seeing how the Henson's puppet masters, the best in history, carry off the amazing puppet characters in Farscape? Any number of things.

Mostly, it's the art involved. It is TV at it's most compelling. A fairly standard premise for a show, elevated to high art by a cast, crew, and creative staff who seem more like a family than any other show I can name. I usually don't subscribe to critics' points of view on TV shows, but with Farscape, it's amazing to see and read how many of them feel the same as we do.

So, such is the depth of my addiction, that I have to watch at least one ep' a week. Then I show up here, or any of the other 'Scape bboards and join in the discussions.

As far as believability, I'd have to say, it's the changes the characters go through. The fact that nothing is ever simple, or cut-and-dried. Things get messed up. Badly, at times. People die. Relationships are a mess, often through no one's fault but fate. All the preconceived notions of sci-fi on TV are thrown out the window, and we often go off in new, sometimes scary, directions.

If we separate out any part of Farscape, looking for that rosetta stone to try to understand this show's effect on us, we miss the fact that it's the total picture. The whole, far greater than the sum of it's parts.

Right on! I have never watched a TV show that had such a profound effect on my pysche. I have only been watching since December and I cannot get enough. I love this show. I myself had the misconception that Farscape was just another Star Trek. The story lines do not lack. The characters are likable and memorable. The main character is someone we can relate to.

This show is the best show on TV.

You said it better than I could rinnicbob. Farscape is special because unlike most other television, it has quality and always does the unexpected. There is no predictability and the characters are never safe in thier predicaments, because the crew isn't afraid to do things that normally isn't done in television. People die, bad things happen, and the best and worst of humanity, and all the hopes dreams and aspirations of countless people are expressed through the characters. In a way it represents all the things that we could wish to be or are afraid of.

Rinnicbob: right their with ya man.

Farscape has seriously taken over the part of my life I devote to entertainment because it is smart and it is quality. The core of my appreciation for this show, which I respond to, is that these are flawed characters who are in constant conflict with their environment, each other and themselves. This speaks a great reality to me that is lacking in so much storytelling and especially storytelling on TV.

The role of John Chrichton in the series is what makes this an emotionally compelling show for me. Being the only human, being an American, I relate to him and what he goes through more than any other character; we're blessed to have an actor like Ben Browder portraying such a rich character and taking the risks he has with him. This is probably the first time I have connected with a male lead in a show over the female lead.

Oh ya, and one word "leather".

What if she got mad at me.

Women who are "sane" are bad enough when they are angry I would hate to see one insane with a sword.

Oh I think she was the best badguy along with Ares on either series.

Is it wierd that when I'm doing formal writing I tend to play off of Scorpius's voice?

I was actually doing a part in a play once that I played like Sikozu. And if I ever didn't know what to do, I would just think 'What would Sikozu do?' And my director really liked it. :D
