I frequent numerous other message forums and someone posted a thread about Firefly;

Firefly the Movie
I just read in this weeks Entertainment Weekly that Joss Whedon's cancelled series Firefly will be made into a movie with the entire original cast. The film will be titled 'Serenity', after the ships name, and will begin shooting later this year. It was a great show and I'm pleased to see it as a movie, I just hope it does well so there can be future Firefly movies.

i replied;

firefly? *pshaw*
I'll wait for the 4 hour *Farscape* Miniseries that will be wrapping up in a week and going into post preduction :D

The following poster remarked;

Yeah.. Firefly was sooooooo much better than Farscape... All Farscape had was a bunch of muppets.

Whedon could out-write the farscape people anyday of the week.

"A great man shows mercy..." STAB. "Guess I'm just a good man."

so, how should i react? should i tolerate such blasphemy?

You kind of started it with the "Pshaw" There's room for people to like both shows.

Still, that Muppet line was cheap. And lifted from Kevin Smith.

Don't get into it with this guy. Just reply that we should all be hoping for more good television like Firefly and Farscape to get back into mainstream rotation and stem the reality tide.

Even though Farscape is far and away the better show.

Don't add that last part.

Have you seen Firefly Maveric? There are a lot of people who like both shows. And if they don't like both shows that's their choice.

If you haven't seen it I recommend you do. It's pretty good, though not IMO as good as Farscape.

If you do respond you might want to say something along the lines of " Farscape had much more than Muppets, as anyone who has seen the show would know. If you haven't, I suggest you do becuase you have no idea what you're missing. If you have and honestly don't like it, well, different strokes for different folks I guess."

If you haven's seen Firefly you may want to challenge this oher poster. You'll try FF if he/she tries Farscape.

Both shows are great shows- and remember, Angel just had a muppet show (pun intended) a couple of weeks back that was hilarious....

Say your only joking and although you think Farscape is better you are happy FireFly can continue on. That it gives Farscape which was more popular a greater chance at a future.

i saw the pilot for firefly and was unimpressed, but i would say this: Whedon is capable of writing as gripping stories as farscape when he is at his best, but at no point ever gave any of those stories the gravity that farscape could, nor could he create characters that one loved as much as the farscape characters. I'm a buffy fan and huge angel fan and feel that angel seasons 2-4 especially 3 were some of the best television ever made, almost as good as the second half of season 4 farscape... almost.

The fact farscape writers can make you care so much for puppet characters is all the more reason to praise them.

Not too long ago I was having a similar dispute over Farscape and Stargate SG-1. Man I got angry.

Stargate is OK, and has had a moment or two, but jeez, it doesnt come close.

I'd concentrate on the similarities between the shows. There's a lot of crossover between the fandoms.

And anyone who says Farscape just has muppets hasn't been watching it.

Exactly right. The show's puppet are believable. Anyone who says that puppets cannot be believeable actors watch Yoda in the original The Empire Strikes Back and in Return of the Jedi. You felt his death in ROTJ like you would any other character.

I watched Firefly, but just couldn't care about the characters the way I could get involved with the Farscape crew. But then, Firefly didn't have a chance to really develop before it was dumped. Even Farscape took several episodes before the characters each found their footing and the interpersonal dynamics really started working.

I think Firefly was on the right track, and with JW's talent and abilities, I think it would have been every bit on par with the best he's done to date. I didn't follow Buffy religiously, but appreciated what I did see. I was completely floored by Hush, and thoroughly enjoyed the musical episode. If Whedon could have had the chance to develop Firefly with writing like that, it surely would have been the near-equal of Farscape!

I guess it's easy for someone who has not really watched Farscape to be put off by the inclusion of "puppets" as main characters. Personally, I have not thought of them as less than real characters since my initial exposure to them. Both Sparky and Pilot have an incredible depth of personality. As for a comparison to Yoda, I'd still view Yoda as an excellent recreation of an individual (I'm always aware of Yoda as a creation, unfortunately), while I completely accept Pilot and Rygel as real characters.

i saw firefly and thought is was slow and boring. the only thing that bothered me about the person's reply was -

"farscape was nothing but a bunch of muppets".

which basically IMO was a lame attempt to get my goat. needless to say i didn't respond. btw, that thread is long dead...
