View Full Version : Oh, give me a break!
It's bad enough that Stargate SG-1 usurped Farscape in the hearts, wallets and ratings of SciFi's programmers. But if Stargate is so much more "accessible" than Farscape, why the heck are they ripping off Farscape's plotlines (http://www.scifi.com/stargate/episodes/season7/0721/)?
Yes, in the boldly original 7th season finale of SG-1, it appears that an alien race known as the Ancients have downloaded valuable knowledge into the brain of the show's swaggering, wisecracking hero (who has a penchant for comparing his alien foes to the Simpsons' Mr. Burns)-- knowledge that his enemies now want to gain at any cost.
Gee, where have I heard that before?

Actually, this is just a rework of an earlier episode in which Jack had the knowledge before...
And THAT may well have aired well before we found out about John's wormhole knowledge.
Edited to add: The SG-1 with the knowledge of the Ancients aired in January 1999.
The Hidden Memory didn't air until 2,000 and the series itself didn't air until almost ten months after that ep. of SG-1.
Farscape did it better, I think, but they surely weren't first (nor was SG-1)... ST:TNG had an episode like that, as did many earlier shows.

I don't think Buddha was trying to "own" anyone, I think he was just stating the facts that when it comes down to it the concept of such a thing was has been around for decades if not more.

Yep, I've heard the plot, in ST DS9. It was the basis for the entire series. The "wormhole aliens" gave wormhole information to Captain Sisko and he would periodically go and visit them. Sisko eventally had to sacrifice himself in order to save the galaxy. BTW: Sisko ROCKS!
PS: I have little respect for SF, StarGate and all that stuff. But, let's not be over zealous or we'll have to stop watching everything.

Sisko did rock! Whoo-hoo! Someone else who agrees! DS9 is definitely my favourite Star Trek series.

The Prophets, yeah, that's who they were! Man, it's been a while since I've watched DS9 and I don't do the re-runs (Maybe later...after Boy grows up...)
I believe that they did impart information about the 'future' including Sisko's child and what would happen if he didn't take down the evil guy. So... maybe it wasn't wormhole knowledge per se; but they certainly did have those other-worldly chats that I thought of each time I saw my man John have the visits with his aliens.
It's true that I'm a bit unclear about all of the details but I do know a similar storyline when I see it (and I see it a lot; not just in SciFi). FS just happened to be the best 'enactments' of any SciFi I've ever seen....ever.
I think that I just know way more about ST than a MAJL ought to...

I agree, DS9 was the best ST series. Had a really bad beginning, which they nicely included in the finale to give the whole run a certain continuity. My quesiton is, why in the hell doesn't Skiffy run DS 9. (really a rhetorical question)

Hey all you niners! ;-) Just another OT post to let you know you're not alone. DS9 was my great TV love before Farscape... And Sisko does rock, but Garak rocks more. What rocks most, though, is 'In the Pale Moonlight' - incidentally the only DS9 episode that has actually been watched at a meeting of the German Farscape mailing list (usually we just watch Farscape there... the only other OT thing we've ever watched was Buffy's 'Once More With Feeling'.)
So, anyway, agree on the DS9 love. A shame the fandom fizzled out just a few months after the show stopped.

Awesome! And about Garak, yes, Garak was incredible. He was one my favourites... I liked Bashir a lot too. Oh, and for a villain Gul Dukat was great. The only Star Trek series where a definitive plot isn't ruined with no characterization. *cough Enterprise*
