View Full Version : G_S and the Secret of Bare Cove

Like the Hardy Boys before us, (the teen sleuths, not the wrestlers) my friends and I have discovered the secret of someplace. Yes, we have uncovered the grisly truth of behind the secret of Bare Cove. Or we would have, if we hadn’t bolted like Kenyan marathon runners as soon as we heard someone coming.

Here’s what went down: We were sitting around the house trying to decide how to spend our Sunday afternoon, when it was suggested that we buy some disposable cameras and go around taking pictures of random stuff. Maybe it was the ammonia emitting from the ferret cage, but we thought it was a good idea and we were soon on our way.

So we set out: a guy with a shaved head and goatee who doesn’t own any clothing that’s not emblazoned with scary rapping clowns; his longtime girlfriend with a silly pom-pom hat; a Hispanic guy that works at a porn video store; a Chinese guy that previously got us kicked out of Canada; yet another Chinese kid that sounds almost exactly like Ray Romano and is essentially the Chinese version of me; and me…who you should know by now. With the exception of Chinese Me, I’ve known all these people since at least high school. We rule.

After taking a few pictures at Nantasket Beach, we drove to Bare Cove, the type of large wooded area where people go to walk their dogs or to write 10,000 page manuscripts on the evils of technology. It didn’t take long for us to veer off the paved path to explore the woods. Eventually, we came to a suspicious pair of women’s shoes. Two red pumps. I think they were pumps. I don’t really know what the hell a pump is, but it’s sounds good: two red pumps. Abandoned shoes in the middle of nowhere are a little disturbing. But not as much a hut made out of tree branches sitting on a hill that overlooks abandoned shoes in the middle of nowhere.

We went up to investigate the hut. It was small; made out of branches and twigs, and what looked like maybe a piece of broken old fence for a door. There was a jacket inside. Outside, there was a hacksaw with a bright orange handle sticking out under the dead leaves. I’m sure there’s many explanations for what we found. Maybe the hut was a Cub Scout project or some handy junkies home, and completely unrelated to the shoes scattered below. It’s not like I saw any blood on the hacksaw, although I didn’t exactly get close enough to investigate. What if the guy was inside? I’m too young to be skinned alive and worn as a coat.

We took pictures of the hut, the shoes and the saw, but took off as soon as we heard someone coming. It might have been a jogger. Or a squirrel. But I wasn’t really too excited about finding out. I’ll post the pictures in a few days…

Frell, I knew something bad was gonna happen to that dude that took the road less travelled by... and a girl too... Poets is dropping like flies...

Motto of the story, stay on the beaten path, with lots of friends, or one day G_S may just find your shoes near a hut, with suspicious looking tool implements nearby...

Sorry, there is no story. Clowns just give me a woody...er, the willies.

With their deathly pale faces and blood red lips, cackling maniacally while frightened children soil themselves left and right.

Clowns are inherently scary. What about the Joker? Huh? And John Wayne Gasy.Or that little guy from Spawn. Or the new Ronald McDonald. Or the Killer Klowns from Outer Space? Pennywise...the list goes on.

And for the record, I'm not "afraid" of clowns. They just make me uncomfortable.

On an unrelated note, I'm getting nagged about my typing. Yes, Johnsgirl727 is standing behind me saying "I can't believe you don't know how to type." As in using two fingers isn't reallly "typing." One of my friends has ICP stuff all over his house, which is really more like a...chicken shack or double-wide outhouse. Anyway, you'd think that would give me the vapors but intentionally scary clowns aren't really all that scary. It's the ones you don't expect to be scary that are really creepy. The same goes for dolls. I hate the ones that open there eyes when you pick them up.

There was a Twilight Zone ep that had one of those freaky dolls. On it, I think it ended up killing the father when he tried to destroy it. Scared the bejesus out of me.

Don't feel bad, g_s. My sister is petrified of, I mean uncomfortable around, clowns too. I saw a chick on Maury Povich once that was too, so maybe it more common than you think. She cried and shrieked every time she even saw a toy clown. She'd start shaking all over and her face would get all white. Very entertaining.

Dare I ask, why is it called "Bare" cove?

It's kind of boring, but here it is:

http://www.key-biz.com/ssn/Hingham/history.html

History of Hingham Massachusetts
In the year 1633, Edmond Hobart, with his wife, their son Joshua, and daughters Rebekah and Sarah landed in Charlestown. Two other sons, Edmond Hobart Jr. and Thomas, and their familes also arrived from England, as did Nicolas Jacob, his wifeand childrenn , and Thomas Lincoln, a weaver.

These settlers found that the existing settlements had no room for them, and they chose a harbor lying inside the peninsula of Nantasket, named Bare Cove because the cove looked bare when the tide was out. The time of settlement is unknown, the first time Bare Cove was mentioned was in tax records dated September 25, 1634. The settlement was assessed a tax of 4 pounds to be paid to the colonial government.

In 1635, Peter Hobart and his family arrived in the colony. Another son of Edmond Hobart, and a minister, he settled with his family in the little settlement. On September 2nd in the year 1635, the Massachusetts court allowed the change of Bave Cove to Hingham, and on the eighteenth of the same month the first 29 proprietors of Hingham drew their house lots.

So...are there any plans to go back and investigate some more? :)

I for one would like to know the layout of the hut. :D

Probably when the weather gets better. Too much snow right now, though it would be funny to see G_S run in the snow. If I went back there I'd get caught by whoever (whatever?) lives there. :)
