Man treated after attempting to nail himself to cross

Associated Press

HARTLAND — A Hartland man was treated at a Pittsfield hospital after he nailed himself to a cross. The 23-year-old man apparently was trying to commit suicide Thursday evening in his living room, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Somerset County Sheriff Barry DeLong said Monday that no charges will be filed. "There is no crime here," he said.

Police said the man appeared delusional and told them he had been "seeing pictures of God on the computer." He told them he had not seen the hit movie "The Passion of the Christ," which depicts the Crucifixion of Jesus.

Lt. Pierre Boucher said the man took two pieces of wood, nailed them together in the form of a cross and placed them on the floor. He attached a suicide sign to the wood and then proceeded to nail one of his hands to the makeshift cross using a 14-penny nail and a hammer.

"When he realized that he was unable to nail his other hand to the board, he called 911," Boucher said.

It was unclear whether the man was seeking assistance for his injury or help in nailing down his other hand.

Hartland Fire Department members responded, said Boucher, and cut off the wood while it was still attached to the man's hand. The wood and the victim were taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital, where the nail was removed.

Boucher said he did not know whether the man received further treatment.

You'd think he'd at least realize that when his hands were nailed that he couldn't nail his feet. What a moron.

He should have nailed his feet first- of course then he would never have got to the phone.

Guess he was board stiff....

What the hell was this guy thinking? you don't go around doing stuff like this for God's sake! Jesus was one thing, this guy's just some nut-job who nailed himself to a couple of 2X4s and if you're going to do this, put a little resarch into it, there's no way a 14-penny nail will hold, you need to use thicker nails than that, and you need good lumber too, none of that cheap home depot plywood, you need something solid like live oak, if you're gonna make like Jesus at least learn a thing or two about carpentry

Crucifiction was often done on trees or simple structures. Moreover, you don't have to be nailed, you can be tied. So long as you will be haning from extended arms so that you eventually suffocate (nailing the feet just delays it until those muscles fail). With rope, he coulda done it.

As Scarren Raptor said, gotta research these things!

Not to make light of this but I'm trying to figure out how he accomplished this?
He could do the feet for sure but then how does one hold a hail and a hammer with just one hand ... and even if the first hand gets nailed down ... how did he do the other one???
Sorry .... it's been a weird morning.

Wow! I've heard of a persecution complex, but not a crucifixtion complex. And yeah, you are right, someone does need to do their homework.

It is a shame that people with a mental or emotional illness don't seek the help they need.

Why would anyone want to commit cruci-fiction after seeing images of God. Anyway, I didn't think there were any pictures of God.

"911. What is the nature of your emergency?"

"Um, you guys got any carpenters over there?"

"Do you need assistance, sir?"

"Yeah, I'm having problems nailing my other hand to the cross."

"Oh My! I will send the paramedics right away!"

"No, no! Look, lady, I just need somebody who can work a hammer. Do these pasta-medics know how to hammer? And while you're talkin' to em, ask em if they have any cheese. I've got a cheddar jones, ya know? But make sure it's lactose free. I've got wicked bad bowels."
