LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Paul Reubens, who won fame as children's television star "Pee-wee Herman," pleaded guilty on Friday to a misdemeanor charge of possessing obscene material and was sentenced to three years of informal probation that requires him to stay away from children.

Prosecutors, as part of an agreement with Reubens, agreed to drop second charge of possessing child pornography and allow the actor, who maintains that the pictures at the center of the case are part of his art collection, to continue an appeal of the case link (http://www.reuters.com/printerFriendlyPopup.jhtml?type=peopleNews&storyID=4608776)

Now – I’m a little wary or this. Without being able to see the material in question we can’t come to a logical conclusion on how to treat this. Remember – one person’s photo of their child harmlessly playing in a tub is another person’s child pornography. We’re living in a day and age where everything is blown out of proportion over issues like this. Just because a committee, or a judge, comes to the conclusion that certain material is “obscene” doesn’t make it so to everyone.

I’m reserving judgement on this story until I’ve seen the material in question… which I doubt will ever happen.

By the way – can you name 3 people who were shot in the back of the head?

1) Abraham Lincoln
2) John F. Kennedy
3) The guy sitting in front of Pee Wee Herman in the theater.

... sorry -- couldn't resist:D

Reubens wasn't the only one. They busted Jeffrey Jones too.

The Smoking Gun has the info.

So, does anyone think that the magazines "Teen Nudes," "101 Boys," and "Young and Ready" are of an artistic nature?

And wasn't R. Kelly acquited of having sex with a minor (a 14 year-old if I remember) becuase the judge said the video tape that he made of it was inadmissable?

Yes, but I believe he is still up on other charges in another court.

Yeah, but only in one state. Since drugs were on the search warrant instead of child porn, the tapes of him having sex (amongst other more disturbing things) with a 14 y/o were ruled inadmissable. The prosecution need the tapes of him having sex with a 14 y/o to prove that had sex with a 14 y/o.

He still faces charges in another state. On a good note, his albums are selling like hot cakes. It would appear his audience is okay with him having sex with (and peeing on) 14 y/o girls.

This isn't the first time Herman's been charged. I probably don't remember right, but I think the first time was for being a flasher, maybe 10 years ago? I've been amazed that he managed to put a career back together after his first run-in with the law over obscenity. I believe it involved real live children the first time, not photographs.

LC, are you thinking of the FL theater incident? That was when he went into an x-rated theater and did what I've always assumed men did in there. So the charge was public indecency. No kids were involved.

Thanks DRD. I withdraw the comment. For some reason I thought it was more public than that. I still don't understand how someone that publicly acknowledged to be into pornography manages to get a gig doing shows for the kiddies.

I think that first time pretty much did destroy his career. He might have been able to revive it a little, but his popularity was gone at that point.

He was masturbating in an essentially empty XXX theater, as I recall.

And the undercover cops who were there looking for something else (and came up empty) decided to nail Pee Wee instead.

I'm not endorsing the behavior, but I would suspect that this is pretty much common practice, and to be expected, in such venues. Moreover, how can you truly be exposing yourself in a dark theater?

I thought I'd seen a number of children's movies that he stars in advertised through the years. I never liked the guy in the first place, irrespective of his sexual practices, so it's not as though I've paid much attention to his career. It just seems like I've seen several movie trailers since the first arrest.

I heard rumors that he was sick of doing PeeWee's Playhouse and was looking for a way to get out of the contract. He has continued to do movies ever since. Batman 2, Blow, Mystery Men, Nightmare Before Christmas, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dr. Doolittle, Matilda.

Didn't PeeWee's Playhouse begin/continue after the Florida arrest? I think that's what I was so surprised to see ads for a year or two later.

No. PeeWee's Playhouse was before, and the FL incident was one reason for it's cancellation. Parents complained. Uptight parents who think that a kid's show performer should live a pure and unblemished life. What rot!

But does anyone here remember the Soupy Sales kids show? What many people never knew was that the studio was always playing pranks during this live show. In fact, some of the humor went over the kids heads, to surprise a few adults. My point is, when we long for the nostalgia of the "good old days", perhaps parents are striving to capture something that never existed, but was based on their limited views of the world as a child.

From the Soupy Sales Show.
There were a few jokesters on the show's staff. There is a widely distributed clip of a backstage prank from the 1960's - Soupy answers a knock at the door and there's a naked woman behind the 'mystery guest' door!

Soupy Sales said later he was sure the TV audience could see the naked girl dancing in front of him on this live broadcast (they couldn't) and that he would be run out of town after he got off the air!

It was on New Year's day, 1965, that Soupy asked his young audience to go to Daddy's wallet and get those "little green pieces of paper with pictures of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Lincoln, and Jefferson on them, send them to me, and I'll send you a postcard from Puerto Rico". This led to a week's suspension (most people believe he was fired outright). Soupy now jokes that he inspired the televangelists that now use the same basic technique.
